Auction Day

I worked an auction today at this estate!
The old brick home sits on 74 acres of rolling farm land.
There was a beautiful old barn and large mature trees.
I did step inside the house (it wasn't open to the
public) and it was in great need of repair.
It was built around 1840 and several generations of
the same family had lived there ever since.
Sadly, I fear it will be torn down when the land is sold.
The lady who lived in the house last, now in her 80's, has moved into
a nursing home.  She was there today, which was nice.
Usually the estate is in a trust and the owners are no longer living!

And this was my view for the day.  We had our registration table set up
in a shed, just in case there was rain.  But the weather ended up being
absolutely gorgeous...sun and clouds, not too warm and a nice breeze.
The rain held off until I was walking to my Jeep at the end of the day!

I was way too busy to bid on anything myself, but it was fun to see
what was there....items from several generations...  old cars, collections,
antiques, vintage furniture, blanket chests, maple cabinets,
sugar buckets and vintage farm equipment.
The funniest thing, I thought, was a Barbie doll case full of
"Barbie heads"!  haha..yes,....just the heads.  But the clincher
for me was who bought it.  Anyone want to take a guess?
Yeah, you're right, it was THAT guy. hahahaha!

There was, however, trash and leftovers at the end
of the day and I collected a box full to bring home!
No photos of that stuff yet...it's still in my Jeep!
I arrived home just in time to make dinner so the
goodies will have to wait.  I am especially excited
to clean up a little antique framed poem about a bird.
It's even grey!  Yeah, I know... SO me....like it
was left there on purpose so I would find it. :)

  1. Barbie Man again. :)
    How funny.

I absolutely love old houses and farms. I bet it would make a great wedding venue. Now that we spent a weekend at that farm in Minnesota, I am stuck on wedding venues. It's fun to dream, isn't it?

Can't wait to see what you brought home.

    1. I know..Barbie Man! He even wants decapitated heads! lol....

I was sad to see this house is such bad shape. It was beautiful back in it's day, though. They just don't make them like that now...I love the windows and unpredictable layouts...this one had a widow's walk at the very top.

    1. It would be nice if someone had a vision and the money to bring that home back to it's original glory. It was huge!

  3. Ohhh...can't wait to see what you brought home...
Too bad you couldn't grab some of the glorious gingerbread from the house...
LOVE gingerbread...I have some here at home...took me FOREVER to find some [years ago now] and have it installed...I think it gives a house so much character...

Our weather was kind of the nothing...a few drops late this afternoon...
The weekend looks a bit dubious though...

    Cheers!
    Linda :o)

  5. Lovely old house...would be great if it was restored. I think it would be hard to see your belongings sold. Hope it wasn't too sad for the woman. Anxious to see the bird poem.

    1. She didn't seem sad at all...chatty and actually smiling and happy. Lots of her kids were there, too, bidding on things. Many times the kids are there and there are hurt feelings, etc. But with mom still living, maybe that made a difference.

  7. what a house, and the stories it could tell!
The barbie heads might of been all that was left of the barbie collection after the brothers messed up their sisters barbies. My daughter was always complaining, and rightly so, that her brothers were taking off her barbies heads. But we did not keep all those body parts.

Looking forward to seeing what is in your box of trash goodies

    1. Yep...and there were lots of sons there. Poor Barbies never had a chance. Lots of old Tonka trucks and firetrucks...I bet the Barbies were hauled around and ran over. lol....There must be something especially fun in decapitating your sister's dolls. hahaha.

  8. One of my life dreams is to own an old home like this and fix it up to it's former glory. Breaks my heart to think this wonderful old house could be demolished.... I've watched shows about people fixing up things and they find 'spare parts' to help. I think 'that guy' will be making a killing on his box of barbie heads ;o)

I'll have to ask Mr. Barbie at the next auction about the heads. haha.

    1. I know! Wasn't that the neatest thing? Left in the middle of the yard with the trash. The glass isn't broken or anything. It's just filthy. I'll enjoy cleaning it up!

Would love to know what Barbie man's house is like.

    1. Yes, I can almost see horse and buggy pulling up in front of it! William Henry Harrison was president at that time! Unbelievable!

I'd love to see Barbie man's house, too! I asked him once if he owned a shop or did an antique booth somewhere and he said that he didn't. But he does tinker and repair. Still...hope he has a big workshop and the stuff isn't lining the walls of his house! haha. "Hoarders" might pay him a visit. lol...

  11. Cool looking house. When I see places like that I want so badly to be able to walk through them and check everything out. And how funny that Barbie man was there and bought the box of heads!

  12. What a CRAZY, BUSY and gorgeous day to work. I enjoyed it and even got a little SUN! A beautiful venue for our auction. I collected some vintage buttons from one of the leftover boxes and am trying to decide WHAT to do with them. They are SO pretty. That house is like the school...probably too old and in too much disrepair to afford to fix it again. Bet it was GRAND in its younger days.

    1. Oooh...look online and I'm sure you'll get some great ideas for the buttons! I agree...that house will be bulldozed. It's a shame it wasn't kept up through the years.

Sure seems to be a fan
Maybe he wants to swap heads out
Like plastic surgery or feed them to a trout
