Here's a look at the goodies I found in the trash at the auction
yesterday! First is this framed lithograph poem about a Bobolink.
John Drescher Co. NY and it's No. 85. circa 1900.
John Drescher Co. NY and it's No. 85. circa 1900.
Quite dirty, but amazingly not damaged or broken after
all these years and a day of people rummaging through
all the box lots.
And here it is all cleaned up!
I wiped the poem with a dry towel,
used some Windex on the glass and
Liquid Gold on the frame!
And I put fresh cardboard and pretty paper on
the backside. It's all ready to hang in my home.
I had to look up a Bobolink!
Turns out, it is a distinctive songbird of open grasslands.
And it's the only American bird that has black underneath
and white on the back! They are found throughout the
entire northern half of the United States and up into the
southern parts of Canada. And evidently, as the poem says,
their lovely song can brighten even the greyest of days! :)
A set of brown transferware salad plates was left out in the
yard, too. Not a chip or crack. It's called Peach, from
Johnson Brothers. Lovely!
And this sweet little book printed in 1899.
I have a collection of wood boxes, so this caught my eye.
Pretty dove-tailed detailing and a hinged lid.
Here's the bottom of the box. Hygieia Chalk from
The American Crayon Company.
I guess it was a sepia kind of collection I found!
Well, there are my treasures!
I know I always say this, but the things that are left were bid
on and paid for by customers. They took what they wanted from the
box lot and left the rest for the trash. I guess my tastes are just
different from theirs. haha. Now, how fun is that? :)
♥
I think you have great taste,
ReplyDeletewell, thanks! Something tells me that you would have brought these same things home yourself. :)
DeleteYou did great! I really like the plate and that box too.
ReplyDeleteThere were six plates! I like the box...very nice!
DeleteI always love the things you bring home. Treasures to me for certain!
ReplyDeletethere's just something better about old stuff. :) I say that more the older I get! hahaha.
Deletegreat finds, I would think you could resell all of it if you choose too.
ReplyDeleteI am amazed at the dovetailed chalk box. Things just don't come in real containers like that anymore.
great restore on the bobolink print- I've never heard of them either. You are Betsy the Teacher today!
I think you are too far south to have bobolinks! I'm wishing some would come to my yard now! ha.
DeleteI love the box, too....everything is disposable now...but they complain about the waste! haha.
Now look what you found
ReplyDeleteA bird singing around
Never knew there was such a one
But it sounds like its song is always well done
Then in the end you found even more
Who knows what people throw away at their shore
For when you are near
You will kick into gear
Letting loose your inner pack rat
And bringing all home to your mat haha
I like my things better
Deletethan a box of barbie heads that shudder.
and yes, The Hoarders will be after me
if I bring much more home to my sea.
hahaha.
I think I like my stuff better
Deletethan a box of doll heads that shudder!
and The Hoarders will be after me
if I bring much more home to my sea!
hahaha.
I posted and it didn't work. Hope I don't show up twice : )
ReplyDeleteGreat treasures!
Very nice bobolink poem....kind of melancholy. Love the brown transfer ware. We have a lot of it and love it. You have a good eye for treasure hunting!
Nope...only once!
DeleteI think the poet liked grey days more than sunny!
Oh you did get some great finds today. Love that plate. And when you clean something up..it's like it was never dirty. Nice job. Sister is back home, so trying to do a little catch up.
ReplyDeletea whole set of those plates! Can't wait to serve salad on them with my plain white dinner plates underneath! They will look like they go together! Sounds like you had a wonderful time this week!
DeleteI love all but especially the plates, you know!:))
ReplyDeleteI knew you would! ha.
Deletehow people can let these lovely plates like trash?!!! fir me isa treasure too Betsy!
DeleteI know...it's just crazy! I have to rescue them! haha.
DeleteIm agree!
DeleteThose are great treasures! You made out like a bandit this week.
ReplyDeleteI love the plates too, and don't you just wish that box was still full of crayons?
I do...that would be so cool to have them lined up in that box! I should see if I can find a photo of one online just to see if they had labels or how they were stacked...vertically or horizontally!
Deletescore! nice...i like the wood box...the poem is cool...your whole lot came out good...neat pattern on that plate too....
ReplyDeletevery fun, huh!
DeleteOh my that's my kind of 'junk' too! All of it. Such a sweet poem, I love it!
ReplyDeletethe poem is the best...I have just the spot on my bedroom wall, too! :)
DeleteWhat a nice haul! Did the bobolink poem have an author attributed?
ReplyDeleteNo. It just says John Dresher Co. NY and No. 85. It's a lithograph, I think. But no poet given!
DeleteI just found one on ebay...same company and style and they are asking $79 for it. Hmmm.
DeleteI appreciate how you LOVE things back to their original beauty.
ReplyDeleteYou take "strays" and love them up.
Each one now has the "Betsy touch".
haha...strays....four legged and no legged! :)
Deleteany news from Idaho you want to share???
DeleteOh my goodness - what a great haul of treasure!! And they scrubbed up nicely too! The framed poem, the book, the box, the plate... it's all in the details!! So glad you rescued them and restored them to their former glory! Take care

any ideas for your buttons yet?
DeleteI know! It's a little weird. But you know GL....he's fine. It's just hilarious to me that it's always him! hahaha. Maybe we wouldn't laugh if we knew how much he sold them for!?
