Blissfully Oblivious

I caught Alex napping yesterday afternoon with his
sound-reduction headset on an interesting way.
I thought he did this with the headband part in
front so he could sleep better.
He usually wears it hanging back on his neck instead
of up on his head, so I think he doesn't really like
the band part anyway.
Well, this evening, we went out and took the triplets with
us. Alex wore his headset like this the entire evening!
Oh my. One thing about autism is that these kids really
are blissfully ignorant to all the social rules that the
rest of us live by. It's refreshing in a way.
Sometimes it's behavior that really can't be tolerated
and totally embarrasses the parents, but in this case
it just gave us a little chuckle. :)

  1. Everyone's talking about naps! Alex looks like he is really enjoying his. :)

  2. I think it's endearing. And, frankly, I have to say that, to a degree, I admire the blissful ignorance that kids on the autism spectrum have to "social norms." That your boys can enjoy being who they are is admirable. Many times inhibitions and adherence to certain social standards can be stifling. Balance is the key for all of us, I suppose.

  3. Dee dee's post and this one makes me really want lunch to hurry and pass so that I can take one! LOL!!! Just kidding... No naps for me today...

  4. Modgirl ~ I do agree...it can be stifling. I find myself slowly relaxing as a get older and things that would have mortified me as a younger woman don't have that affect anymore. ...things that really don't matter. And on the flip side of that, I do try to remember what felt like the world coming to an end as a teenager...and try to be sympathetic to our Taylor.

  5. Rebecca ~ I've never been a nap taker. When the boys were younger and it was part of the daily routine, that is when I relished the quiet house and time to myself. Now I find myself doing the same after they are in bed for the night!

  7. I can see the thinking here. I find the sound of the fan in my bedroom very soothing and sleep-inducing...so much so that I keep it running on nights when I don't even really need it. I just position it so that it faces away from the bed...

  8. Betsy, I wanted to pass something along. Our local paper www.thestar.com has an article today on the possible harmful effects of radio frequencies from cellphones, on youngsters. The Toronto Public Health has today issued a caution for parents. Anyway, in the "comments" section following the article, someone has posted a comment about the possible link of radio frequencies from cellphones, and autism. I thought this might interest you, but please note, this was just a comment posted by some anonymous individual...there may (or not) be any credence to it.

  9. Lavinia ~ thanks for the info. I'll check out the article. ...and like everything here, I read things with a certain amount of skeptisism, but an interest in finding a second source that confirms the allegations. It's always interesting!

  10. An adorable picture of Alex. I love to watch my kids sleep too & still wake up to check on them every night. They are not so small but 8 & almost 11. But, our our kids will always be babies, isn't it? I think you are a wonderful role model.

  14. very touching! i love that he was not caught up in looking cool or any of those societal pressures. we could all learn a lesson from that!

  15. No matter their age, the sight of our kids sleeping peacefully is always a sweet one isn't it?

The best thing(and maybe the only thing)I appreciate about aging is not caring two figs what people think anymore.

I have been catching up on my reading today. There is an article in the July 1st issue of Time about the Fragile X Factor and its relationship to autism among other things. I had never heard of it. Have you read up on this possible cause? Other syndromes are linked to it. One is ADHD which we have in abundance in our family. Interesting.

  16. stevie ~ thanks for the tip. I've just recently started blogging with a mother of 3 fragile x children. I don't know anything about it! I'll check out the article.

  18. Alex looks so sweet taking his nap.

It is probably better to let him wear the headsets the way he likes them. Maybe the headband is annoying, no matter where he places it? It might be hot in this weather? It's so humid here today!
