and heard Alex squealing and laughing and dancing
around the family room. He was more animated than
his normal happy self, so I went to see what was so exciting.
He watched inside for quite a while and then had
to do outside and serve as the "supervisor"
to the whole project. Alex has always loved water,
even the bathtub. I've read that the pressure it
creates on your body is comforting and an anti-anxiety
to many autistic children. I also read that many
of them are in some kind of constant pain (how sad!)
and that the water is very soothing.
As you can see, he is a very big boy ~ a true lover of
food and a couch potato. Hopefully he'll
burn a few calories while he's out there!
Hurray for summer and swimming pools, Alex!
That looks like some summertime fun! Thanks for the smiles this morning! :)
ReplyDeleteOh, that's great! He'll be splish-splashing in no time and what wonderful exercise! That is so intertesting about water being a comfort. I wonder if that has something to do with remembering a safe environment in the womb?
ReplyDeleteOh, that looks like an oasis. I second Alex's delight. Enjoy many happy times in the water this summer... I know Alex will!
ReplyDeletePamela loves the water too. When she was younger and less verbal, we noticed her language always increased when she was in the water. I think it has to do with the calming effect of the deep pressure, evenly spread over her body. Her favorite thing was to swim completely submerged to get the full effect.
ReplyDeleteI hope Alex has a blast !!!!!
Glasers ~ I have read about the water increasing language. Very interesting that it works with Pamela. I tried to tell the boys' speech pathologist that at school. I don't think she believed me. They do get to go swimming a couple of times a year for phys ed and I was encouraging her to go along.
ReplyDeleteBetsy - What a continual source of inspiration you are to so many, the devotion and sacrifice you shower upon your family is wondrous.
ReplyDeleteNothing says "summer is here" like dad rigging up the pool....
ReplyDeleteThis is a nice big one...I hope the boys have loads of fun splish splashing around in it....
That's great! What a nice big pool! I bet they will have so much fun in it! I know my kids love when we set up the pools!
ReplyDeleteKim ~ wow, you are too kind. Thanks for encouraging me today!
ReplyDeleteI hope Alex is enjoying that pool today. Your information about all the treatments for autism is really interesting. It is such a puzzling thing to deal with. You do a great job.
ReplyDeleteThat's great you have the pool for the summertime fun!
ReplyDeleteMichelle
Betsy...while reading this I got just as excited as Alex seems to be....makes my old heart happy to imagine all the laughter about to take place with your boys...God bless...Dee Dee
ReplyDeleteYEAH!!! Do you boys swim well? I hope Alex and all of his family enjoy every minute of it!
ReplyDeleteWay too cold for swimming here - although we haven't had ice for three weeks or so!
ReplyDeleteMarcia ~ they can go under water and hold their breath really well, but can't technically swim in deep water. We were just saying that we should find somewhere that would give them lessons!
ReplyDeleteI imagine it'll be hard to persuade Alex to leave once he's in the water... it's so lovely just to swim and float...!
ReplyDeleteThat's v interesting about the attraction of water for autistic people.
Arnt their sqeals of delight just the best noise ever! Even if ear piercing!
ReplyDeleteYour yard and pool look so inviting, Betsy! I hope Alex and his brothers are all enjoying the water today.
ReplyDeleteThank you kindly for the birthday best wishes!
you know something funny? as a baby we would tell jaden's sitters...if he gets fussy...just give him a bath...he's loved water his whole life...
ReplyDeleteoff subject, i think i may get jaden some of those headphones from home depot...or lowes...do you think they would be good for praise and worship on sundays? he hasn't graduated up b/c he can't handle the sensory overload during worship...just wondering your success...
Great idea! Great post! Came via David!
