Limoges Ferner

I brought this little planter home from the auctions
a while ago.  It's a tiny little thing but the perfect size
for hanging above my kitchen desk.

After some online investigating, I discovered it
is called a 'ferner'.  Most have heavy gold edging and
are beautifully hand painted porcelain.  They were
created in Limoges, France from 1890 to 1932.
If you happen upon a little hanging Jardiniere
planter, I suggest you take it home with you!
They sell for $250 to $350!
Mine was a steal at $6!

The little plant has been a favorite of mine for years.
The first time I ever saw one, I had just found out I was
pregnant for the first time.  I was in the grocery doing the
weekly shopping and saw this pretty little lacy plant.
I looked at the tag and it was called "Baby Tears".
Well, of course I had to have it, so into my cart it went!

I had been on the lookout for a new Baby Tears for several
years now and couldn't find one.  Over the winter I found
them for sale on Amazon!  Yes, I had a little one shipped to me
from Florida.  Although I wouldn't recommend doing that
during our kind of winter!  It was -15F the day it was delivered
and it sat outside all day since nobody was home to bring
it in!  It barely survived ... I think it was in shock, having
been living in Florida! ....but it has made a nice come-back.

So there you have my two tips for the day...
If you see a ferner, get it!  And if you can't find the
kind of houseplant you want, look on amazon!
The seller I used is here.

  9. How lovely indeed! I love the 'ferner!'

Growing up, my Mom always had a Baby Tears on the kitchen windowsill. They are so cute. But I've never seen it as a hanging plant. I like it!! Hers stayed more compact or maybe she just kept it trimmed?

    1. If he could sue he probably would
as he was so cold and felt like wood.
Had to cut off a lot of dead
which I'm sure caused him dread.
But it seems he has forgiven me
and has grown green and spring-y.
      lol....

  12. Baby Tears sounds familiar. I think my mom had some of that when I was a teenager. I looked for a Wandering Jew for several years before seeing a plant on the table of my son's mother in law. She was kind enough to give me some clippings. Now I am working on keeping it tame.

    You ferner is beautiful.

    1. I've never had a Wandering Jew, but I think they are so pretty with their variegated leaves! Yours must like you if it's growing out of control! haha.

    2. They get wild and stalky when they grow too much. Gotta keep pinching them back. And then rooting the cuttings.

    3. I was at the garden center today and they had a full row of Wandering Jews in hanging baskets. So pretty!

  14. It's a beautiful piece, and the little Baby Tears make it even more so.
I have a spreading ground cover around the pond called Creeping Jenny, it has a similar leaf but more of a lime green color.
You most definitely bought yourself a bargain antique.

  17. I remember Baby Tears on our kitchen windowsill at home too. So delicate. I adore the ferner - have never heard of it before. What a steal! And how perfect that the tears of the plant are the same shape as the ferner itself. It was meant to be!
