In The Autism World Lately

Spencer likes to sleep with his arm outstretched and his hand
laying on top of Alex's head.  Don't ask why...I have no idea! ha.
Most of the time Alex doesn't mind, but once in a while,
he switches positions and sleeps with his head at the foot
of the bed.  I'm not sure why he doesn't think to take his
pillow with him, but he lays there with his neck all
crooked (and his headset still on!) looking very awkward!

I check on the guys right before I go to bed and slip Alex's
headset off so his ears can breath during the night.
The first time he switched positions I had quite a surprise
when I fumbled in the dark for his headset and found his
feet on the pillow! haha.

Instead of letting his neck be crooked all night,
I started putting a pillow at the foot of the bed so he
could sleep either way in comfort.
It looks a little funny, but this is how
the bed is made now. ha.

It's just another way we roll with the weirdnesses here!

  1. Aww..so cute. The 3 of them sleep together? My son won't allow anyone else in his bed, I guess it's because he always has slept alone.
Btw, not too weird at all:)

    1. Yes, they do....they refuse to be separated although we've tried with three cribs, three youth beds, three twin beds etc. Every time we'd go into their room, they would all be piled into one little bed! So we gave up and just gave them a king sized

  2. I know you've had LOTS of experience, but I love how you find different and loving ways to help your boys. Wishing you a Happy Mother's Day in advance! xo :-)

  3. I am not alone with the headset business then. When I can't sleep I put my headphones on and listen to soft music. Then i wake in the morning with the headphones still on! Perhaps you should pop round and remove mine as well when I'm asleep? Ha!

  4. Wouldn't we all have loved a mother so caring and thoughtful as you Betsy, you just roll with the flow, and make life so wholesome and fun for your boys.
I watched a program last night about two boys with autism, and the challenges the two of them faced once the graduated High School and became twenty one years of age, I thought of you and your beautiful family throughout its showing.
    Hugs,

  6. I find this totally fascinating and so sweet they like to sleep together ~ they are so close aren't they.
It looks like two beds pushed together ~ or is there a very wide mattress?.
Are Spencer and Alex a little closer than Harry.
So Spencer must be in the middle with Alex on the right and harry on the left . . . is that right?
I wonder if Spencer and Alex did this in your womb before they were born . . . perhaps it stems from that.
    Are they true triplets?

    You are a wonderful mother for them . . . so loving . . . :)

    1. The headboard is two twin sized ones from their old beds that are just pushed together. The mattress is a king size.
Spencer and Alex are identical but Harry is just as close if not closer to Spencer.
They do sleep in that order...and that is their birth order, too! They chose that...not us. :)

When we separated them into three cribs they stretched their arms out between the railings and held hands!
Then when they were big enough to climb out, they would all pile into one crib after I left the room. :)
There just wasn't any fighting it because they were crammed into one small bed and two were left empty no
      matter what we tried! lol...

    2. . . . . quite fascinating that the order is the same as the birth order.

Loved that they stretched through the railings to hold hands . . . :)
When one of them is unwell are the others affected I wonder?. A powerful bond is formed with twins/triplets . . .

    3. The others are concerned when one is sick, yes. And the sick one is lonely when the other two go off to school and watches for the bus through the window in the afternoon. Aw. :)

    4. Such a wonderful powerful bond they have.
I wonder, do they ever argue or disagree? . .

    5. Very, very rarely do they ever argue....I think I can only remember twice ever!

  9. I had wondered why they slept in the same bed and now I learn that it's by their choice. How sweet that they have always wanted to be so close together.

    1. Yes, we really tried to get them to get over that and sleep in their own beds...all the expense we went to with the cribs, youth beds, twin beds....and each time two were rejected. I have the funniest photos of them all crammed into one with the two other's empty. The first time I separated them to their own cribs they cried...and then when I checked back later and saw them holding hands through the bars, I cried! ha.

  10. haha that must have been a surprise
Going in and thinking you were all wise
    Only to get feet
    For a meet and greet
Good idea with the pillow indeed

    1. Feet feel really weird when you're expecting someone's head.
Especially in the dark, it can really cause some dread!
I remember thinking wth and turning on the light
and then I could see that everything was alright. haha.

  13. I think it's really sweet that they sleep together - even if one has to change positions sometimes! Do I see some train pictures taped to the headboard?

  14. You're a good mama for making sure he doesn't sleep all wonky. I think it's so sweet that they like to sleep together. That's a real bond, right there. My mother-in-law is a twin and I can't get over the connection and closeness she and her sister share.

    1. They most certainly have a different bond that other siblings, that is for sure!

And yeah...his neck and head...it gives me a headache just to imagine sleeping like that all night!

  15. It's a good thing Alex doesn't sleep in the middle of the bed...otherwise you'd be sticking that pillow UNDER the bedspread.

    1. Well, the comforter isn't tucked in on the bottom, so it would work for any space....and they don't like a top sheet, so that's easy! ha.

  16. Weirdness = Variation from the norm
    The Norm = Boring Normality
Sleeping with your head at the top, the bottom or the middle of the bed = Cool

  17. Hi Betsy - how fascinating to find they sort themselves out and always have done .. is Spencer the one in the middle - I guess he must be .. cheers Hilary

  18. Love all you wonderful stories of the boys. It always makes me smile.

  19. I love this story too. Truth be told, I'm guessing lots of us have bedroom stories to tell and not of the inappropriate kind. We sleep with a noisey old fan at night to drowned out the snoring of our dog. And when Wilbur visits, we sleep with his dog bed between us. It's all part of real life, isn't it? Your bed story made me smile today.

    1. We sleep with a noisey old fan, too...because the mister can't fall asleep if it's "too quiet". In the summer we let it blow a breeze on us and in the winter we turn it towards the wall. ha. And we usually have a cat or three in between us somewhere. :)
