The tiles were removed from the foyer and under the refrigerator.
All done with the jack hammer now! Yay! ha.
The holes were patched in the drywall, outlet plates were
removed, and window frames painted.
Our contractor discovered that whoever laid the original floor
used plywood instead of tile board, then screwed and glued it
onto the sub-flooring. This error is what made all the tiles crack...
they couldn't expand and contract properly. In addition to that,
the floor is a different height than the floor with carpeting,
so that layer of plywood has to be removed
before the new floor can be laid.
You can see one sheet of plywood has been removed.
Slow going on that because it's hard to find the screws in the old grout.
After the screws are removed, it has to be pried up because of the glue!
When that is done, we'll be on to more interesting parts like
cabinets, paint and new flooring!
Keith made me this sign.
Thanks Keith...it's perfect!
♥
Cute sign! It sounds as though it is turning out to be a lot more work, but I am sure that it will all be beautiful and definitely worth it in the end Betsy!! I hated when we did our kitchen, it was worse than anything else in some ways, but it was such a transformation I was pleased and I hope that you will be too!! Hang on in there. xx
ReplyDeleteYou know those renos on tv always have setbacks along the way? Yep, in real life they happen, too! I almost expected it!
DeleteBut it was nice that the drywall worked in our favor so we're even on time, anyway.
Good job on the sign, Keith!
ReplyDeleteGood job on the tile removal workers!
Good job remembering to share it with us, Betsy! ;)
Now go have some of that wine!
haha....I haven't needed any alcohol today! Just having my migraine gone is making me happy enough! ha.
DeleteOh wow, can't wait to see more.
ReplyDeleteMe either! I'm ready to get on with the pretty stuff!
DeleteAnd still no snoopervisors? :-) Or have they all run for the hills? :-)
ReplyDeleteI think they have all come to my house. At the back of my place there is a big field and woodland teeming with feral and stray cats!
DeleteMaybe now that the jack hammer is done they will venture back inside. They have been scarce during the day but when it gets dark they all venture back inside to snoop, sniff and eat. They're very skiddish, that's for sure!
DeleteI can just imagine them tentatively creeping in at night to see what the commotion is all about. Maybe they will hop a freighter to keep Keith's lot company until the reno is done!
DeleteWell, he feeds his better than I do mine....or so I've heard! So I wouldn't be surprised if they came knocking in his door. Yeah, they would have to knock....he doesn't have a cat flap. Ha.
DeleteCrikey! What time did the bomb go off?
ReplyDeleteAbout 9AM. lol.
DeleteIt's funny all the things that you find and find out when you remodel
ReplyDeleteWe all are looking forward to the finish product.
Did Gray come back yet?
No Grey. :(
DeleteHope you feel better of your headache Betsy! maybe you can close the eyes by a while:)
ReplyDeleteAnyway with all the chaos yours window view look beautiful!!
My headache finally went away late this afternoon. It's always a two day affair. ugh. But I feel so much better now!
DeleteFun to share this experience with you, but I am glad that I not actually going through this again. Keep the updates coming!
ReplyDeleteYou know exactly what it's like, don't you! ha. It will be so much better when the new floor is laid. Right now it is just plain yucky!
DeleteSounds like they went the cheapo/easy route the first time around
ReplyDeleteNot fun when that is found
But at least it will get done right
And be sure and keep that sign in sight
Very cheap!
DeleteThe little creeps!
Now we're paying for it.
What a load of ....
haha. Yes, will be so much better
as we live happily ever after. ha.
WOW! I'm having fun with you! The woman who owned our town home laid new tile (lovely 18" stone) in the kitchen and dining room OVER the old ugly while tile (I know because it is still in the pantry! I feel your pain about the difference in floor heights. I cringe literally every time I look at the baseboard running from the dining room into the living room and onto the carpet because you can SEE the 1/4" difference. Drives me batty. She also tiled the dishwasher in when she had the tiles laid. When the dishwasher broke and had to be replaced I quickly realized the tile was going to have to be chipped out. Thank goodness she left a few spare squares. Of course, now it is tiled in once again. Good that you are evening up the floors.
ReplyDeleteOh, that is strange! Strange! haha....why don't they think? lol...
DeleteRenovations ALWAYS bring surprises! Why is it this way?!
ReplyDeleteI know! I just knew something would happen, so I was hardly surprised...but I did feel sorry for poor Kris having to deal with it.
DeleteThe boys seem great, though, so I can deal with all the other stuff.
So glad they're taking it in stride!
DeleteMe, too! It helps that they aren't here during the day....that jack hammer would have upset Alex, especially! It already bothers him that my jeep is parked out front and not in the garage where it belongs! Ha. He doesn't miss a thing.
DeleteI told James about your flooring error and he said, "Oh, no..."
ReplyDeleteI'm excited to see your finished project and I'm also hoping your boys are taking it all okay.
And, I am finally back to where my computer knows my name, even if I'm not totally sure of my passwords.
:0)
I bet it feels great to be home! We missed you, too!
DeleteCute sign!
ReplyDeleteLooks like progress is being made
Can't wait to see the end result!
Slowly but surely!
DeleteOh the fun of renos! It will be so nice when done, can hardly wait to see it all finished. And I can only imagine the joy you will feel when it's done!!
ReplyDeleteOh, I know! Just going through the process makes you so excited when it's all done! Can't wait!
DeleteI like the sign - perfect for a renovation!
ReplyDeleteIt's too bad they didn't do the floor right - would have saved you time and money!
I know...I was thinking that today....we're paying for their laziness!
DeleteWhat would a big renovation be without a surprise or two?
ReplyDeleteIt's SO true. All we're missing is a camera crew for a tv show. haha.
Deletewow, thats a big job, Betsy I am switching to a voice activated program, my blog might disappear for a while but I will be back,
ReplyDeleteOh that is so exciting! I hope it works very well for you!
DeleteGreat sign by Keith . . . lol
ReplyDeleteSo that is the answer to the mystery of the cracked tiles.
Snags nearly always crop up on projects like this.
But looks like steady progress there.
Interesting to see what day 3 brings . . . . . :)
Today the poor man has to wrestle with the wrestle with that plywood!
DeleteHi Betsy - it's all happening and that's the main thing. Love Keith's sign ... a bit early for the vino - but I'll grab another coffee!! Cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteYes, it's coffee for me, too....a whole pot! Ha. Tastes extra good on this chilly morning!
DeleteNice sign, Keith... but I still like "Keep Calm and Call Batman!"
ReplyDeleteI'm finding this fascinating. We have a total of 40+ cracked tiles for the exact same reason. For us it means taking up the plywood from the kitchen, sunroom, foyer, hallway ,bathroom and laundry room. That is why we have waited for 12 years....and still waiting. I am counting on you to motivate us. No pressure...stay calm. LOL!
