Sweet Corn Trip

I went to my favorite sweet corn farm this morning!
The drive is pleasant and the weather was perfect!
I came home with 4 dozen ears and shucked, cooked,
cut, and put it all in freezer bags.

Yum.

  3. I really like the clear blue skies in all the photos. Our sweet corn was sold late this year as they just couldn't get it in the field until late. We have an aggressive farmer in our area who sells his corn on some corner in every town for many miles around. The sugar sweet corn is really good this year.

  5. Now THAT's a corn field! (My neighbor's corn didn't really do so well, and we only got 7 quarts of creamed corn put in the freezer, and a few dozen ears for corn-on-the-cob.) Where's the pictures of YOU out there picking, and shucking, and cutting?

    1. Isn't it a beautiful field? I think our weather really helped...plenty of rain with the sun and the temps have been mild instead of sweltering.
I did think about you today, though, with picking rights just next door! You'll treat that creamed corn like gold this winter, won't you? Bring it out on extra special occasions. Pic of me? haha....I didn't even think of it...you should have seen my kitchen floor when I was done! ha.

  7. Was there enough room for that airplane to land and take off?

I love fresh-picked sweet corn. We haven't tried freezing them... how do they taste after being frozen?

    1. I don't like the taste of it if you freeze it, cob and all. But it you go ahead and cook it (microwave) and undercook it just a little, then cut it off the cob, it freezes very well and tastes just like it did in the summer.

The little plane was just parked there. There is a sky diving business just down the road so I guess they just drove their plane home! haha.

  16. Gorgeous countryside! That sounds so yummy . . . I think I need to see if there are any 'corn farms' near me. The pictures bring back memories of a sixth grade field trip we all went on the first week of school. We had lunch at a corn farm and got to try corn fresh and raw from the stalk. I had NEVER done such a thing before and it really impressed itself upon me. I remember we also got a whole bunch of cucumbers from the same farmer and we went back to school and made garlic pickles . . . the biggest, most flavorful pickles I"ve ever had in my life! I have actually dreamed about those pickles! Making my own is on my bucket list . . . ooh, now I"m totally craving grilled corn on the cob with a side of garlic pickles!

    1. What a fun memory! Yes, I could probably make a meal out of corn and pickes, too! I did make some yummy pickles last summer from a recipe on pinterest. I need to find that again since I have cucumbers that need to be picked! I hope you find a corn farm! I just assumed everyone had one...we probably have a half dozen of them around me and I just take it for granted, think everyone does!

  19. So tell me.....how do you freeze it?
How do you cook it once thawed?
    Is it off the cob?
    Enquiring minds need to know....
    Cheers!

    1. Here is how I cook it to eat immediately on the cob, or cut it off and put it in freezer bags....

      http://myfivemen.blogspot.com/2012/07/sweet-corn.html

To thaw it, I lay the whole sealed bag in a sink of water until it's thawed, then I pour it into a sauce pan and heat it through. It's already cooked...just needs to be heated and salted.

Yum! It tasted SO good in the middle of the winter!
