Great minds think alike! Joan came to dinner tonight (it was my turn to cook) so I looked in the fridge and found some stale bread, courgette, peppers, Frikadelen, chopped tomato left overs, grated cheese, onion and garlic. So I invented a meal which the closest name I could think of was a "Croque Madame Courgette Gratin" with perhaps a big hint of paprika in it ! Like you I didn't have a recipe, and I couldn't repeat it exactly. It was heavenly! Joan loved it.
A teacher at the Cordon Bleu said don't look up a recipe, go to the shops and buy the necessary ingredients. The best way is to go to the veg market, fish market, meat market, whatever, and buy the ingredients that YOU like, being careful to buy really fresh looking stuff. Come home lay it all out on the table, look at it, and INVENT something. (He must be mad!)
That's how I shop...and cook! I do occasionally follow a recipe but usually just look in the fridge and see what sounds good. I taste as I go along and add this and that. So, if he is mad, so am I. (and you!) lol....
And I love the saying, "An empty skillet is a blank canvas."
Slate wanted a taste Didn't want it to go to waste Poor Gloria missing me Here at your sea lol Carrots I will eat Already turning orange at my street lol
Too many carrots can turn you orange! Then people will think you are strange. The mister works with someone that drank carrot juice every day and that happened to him, much to his dismay. lol...
lmao, an oompa loompa at my sea It is already happening a bit to me Noticed my hands against mr brothers the other day He is pink, I'm yellow/orange a bit on display lol Oh well Worse things at ones cell
I think you can even it out with something green then you won't look too obscene. although, I'd enjoy calling you an oompa. Laughing already, I tell ya. lol. Just don't start singing their song. Cuz that is just plain wrong!
Well, you're just doing what you have to do so a little orange will look good on you. A whole new meaning to a peaches and cream complexion Is what I'd say, I reckon. haha.
That looks really good. I think dinner at your house must be wonderful all the time. I keep thinking we should eat sweet corn, and then at supper time I forget all about it. Maybe tomorrow. :0)
Amen girls! Always nice to take a break from the kitchen.... Your chowder looks great Betsy...I try and cook the same way... If it's in the fridge....it's a meal! Cheers! Linda :o)
Hi Betsy, I love corn chowder and this looks so delicious. My cats usually NEED to smell whatever we are eating, too!!! Thank you for your kind comment on my post this evening. Your boys would have loved visiting with Kyle and viewing his train project. The guys were beginning to start on Christmas projects, too. It was a heartwarming afternoon. Thanks again and God bless you and yours.
It sounded like a great afternoon! Yes, I know my guys would have loved it! It's always so great to be able to put a face with a name! I'm glad you're showing yourself off! ha. :)
hahaha.....I know! I tell ya, it's hard to do! And he usually asks so sweetly. His meow is quite soft and sweet. On the other hand, I have no problem giving Jack a little swat on the butt when he breaks the rules. lol....Not fair, I know.
Oh Betsy, I could jump into that pot of corn chowder. That looks so so so good! I think you could sell jars of it in your shop! We had so much fun at Myk's last night. Family time just can't be beat. Kaleb heads back to college, so won't see him for a while. It cool here today...a bowl of your chowder would really go good about now.
Omy Slate ate???
ReplyDeleteNo...he wanted to but I saved the bowl! lol...he only got to smell it! hahaha.

Apparently this is the norm in France, nobody buys cookery books it seems.
DeleteYou should write one! :)
DeleteBoy, does that look scrumptious! Rich and creamy. No wonder Slate was investigating. Yummmm.
ReplyDeleteIt really was yummy....I'm sorry it's all gone! Well, one serving left that Alex want for dinner. I'll have to make it again..super easy!
DeleteKeith's concoction sounds good too!
ReplyDeleteIt does, doesn't it? I can almost smell it. Maybe he took a picture.
DeleteI didn't have time to take a picture. As soon as I took it out of the oven Joan pounced on it and started cutting it up and filled her plate !
DeleteWell that's the best review right there!
DeleteI've never had corn chowder, but this sure looks good!
ReplyDeleteOh, you need to make some! It's the best! I freeze it...tastes great in the winter.

ReplyDeleteHe obviously agrees it looks absolutely delicious. :)
I'm so glad he didn't! I don't share my plate with anyone! haha.
DeleteNot even Slate . . . . or Me!! ROFL
DeleteExactly! I'll gladly serve you your own but I won't share my serving. lol....

DeleteBy the way - I like your new shamrock header - very fresh and pretty.
ReplyDeleteThank you! My little shamrock is doing very well! He wants a drink daily and if I remember to do that, he thrives! Thirsty little guy! haha.
DeleteThat looks really good. I think dinner at your house must be wonderful all the time.
ReplyDeleteI keep thinking we should eat sweet corn, and then at supper time I forget all about it.
Maybe tomorrow.
:0)
I try to make it wonderful! But sometimes it's just a dagwood sandwich with veggies and dip. (which tastes wonderful to me anyway! ha.)
DeleteThat sounds pretty wonderful to me, especially if you make it. ha!
Deletehaha...isn't that the truth? Sometimes I say that...I'm hungry, I just don't feel like cooking! And if someone else makes it, it's a real treat!
DeleteAmen girls!
DeleteAlways nice to take a break from the kitchen....
Your chowder looks great Betsy...I try and cook the same way...
If it's in the fridge....it's a meal!

Linda :o)
I think it's fun to cook that way...and it uses up all the stuff in the fridge! My omelettes are that way, too...just toss it in there! ha.
DeleteHaha At dinner sometimes I would be happy OTHER make the food omy!
DeleteBTW many times Esperanza at night cook by herself (veggie stuff) :)
Smart Slate the Kitty, this soup looks delicious! Such pretty yellow and white corn too.
ReplyDeleteThe sweet corn farm had silver king and bi-color. Both were yummy....

Deletesounds like it would taste good...and be warm in my belly...
ReplyDeletewhich are two good qualities.

If it was blazing hot outside, we'd be waiting for winter to eat it! But it was just right and very yummy!
DeleteI didn't think you could ever say no to Slate. :-) Lynne in NC
ReplyDeletehahaha.....I know! I tell ya, it's hard to do! And he usually asks so sweetly. His meow is quite soft and sweet. On the other hand, I have no problem giving Jack a little swat on the butt when he breaks the rules. lol....Not fair, I know.

DeleteI love when you can make dinner with "things on hand".
ReplyDeleteThis soup looks delicious and with our cool weather lately it would be perfect.
Looks yummy to me!
