New Years Day Pork Tenderloin With Saurkraut


I know this is a traditional meal for New Year's Day here in the
USA, but I've never made it!  My future daughter-in-law, who happens to
love it, was talking about it a few days ago, so I thought I'd give it a try.

I looked online and found a recipe for Lancaster, PA Pork and
Kraut, which just happens to be right where she lives!
I changed a few things and came up with this.... 

Pork and Kraut

I browned a 4 lb tenderloin in olive oil, removed from heat and
rubbed with salt, pepper, and minced garlic.
Then I layered on a sliced onion, two sliced and peeled apples,
a can of kraut and 4 T brown sugar.
Cover and roast at 250 for 4-5 hours.
(I think next time I won't cover it since there
was so much liquid, and put the pork on top
of all the layers.)

And I hear it's some kind of sacrilege to serve without mashed 
potatoes, so of course, we happily followed along!

Yum!  It was delicious and the pork was so tender!

Do you have a traditional meal on New Year's Day?

Would you believe I slept until 11:30 this morning?
This hostess was tired from the whole month of December.
Not to mention someone's snoring kept me up until around 3. ha.
And when I finally did get up, The Mister had taken down
the Christmas tree!  Glad I missed that chore! ha ha.

    1. baby back ribs slow baked in that kraut, sugar, and shredded apple mixture are also delicious!

    2. Oh good. :) It was good...and we have plenty of leftovers! I think we'll have it again tomorrow!
      I just read on someone's blog from Oklahoma that the tradition in the south is black eyed peas, rice and cabbage!

    3. Oh, that sounds wonderful, too! I bed they fall off the bone...just the way we like them! I almost shredded the apples....that's a good idea, too.

    4. oh that's interesting! when I cooked at Hilcrest Home in Arkansas we made quite a bit of black eyed peas and pinto beans. I never really aquired a taste for them but the residents sure liked them!

    5. I have never had them! I know rice and beans is very popular down there...I guess that dish just didn't make it's way up here to the midwest. ha.

  4. Wish I had been at your table. Since today is was just my dearest and me...the only tradition I followed was sleeping in, watching the Rose Bowl Parade (which is 20 minutes from our house) in my nightgown and drinking coffee, eating fruitcake, scones, and pumpkin bread. Watch football, and took down the rest of Christmas..but left up the snowmen.

    1. Our daughter bundled up the kids and parked on the sidwalk at 4 am this morning to see the Rose Parade in person....Yikes too early ~~ too cold.

    2. Coffee in my nightgown is my favorite every day tradition...still in bed, too. ha.

      Football has been on our tv all day, but I didn't watch any. I went to the grocery since the mister was home and I could leave the boys with him.

      loved your breakfast...or brunch....perfect for a little holiday treat!

      How fun to be so close to the parade...bet your daughter and her family had fun!

  5. Your pork looks wonderful! We're back to just two of us in the house, and had leftover stew from Sunday night.

    This afternoon I started undecorating in the kitchen, and tonight we took the tree down. The rest will be tomorrow.

    1. well, you know leftovers are my very favorite. ha. I made double most of the time just so I don't have to cook the next day. Stew sounds delish!

      ours is down, too...now I just need to put all the stuff away!

  6. nice...T makes a kelbasa, potato and kraut dish that is really good....we had our beans and greens for the new year...and cabbage but i held off on that...ha...

  9. Yes, that's the same menu for my familys' New Year's Day tradition, except my Dad would start the Pork & Sauerkraut on New Year's Eve and have a bite late at night. For the longest time, we would have Jan and Mom over for the day and serve that dinner. My family also burned a Bayberry Candle too. That tradition rhyme is: "Bayberry candles burned to the socket, bring health to the home, and wealth to the pocket."

  10. L is from Bob's part of PA! He will tell you that is God's Country! We ALWAYS have pork and sauerkraut on New Year's Day....substitute asparagus for the peas and our plates looked similar! We roast our pork and make gravy too! And Mamaw's rolls! YUM!

    I am tackling the UN decorating today....YUK.

  11. Roasted pork and mashed potatoes sounds so delicious. I wish I could magically make it appear soon. The New Year as hit us with the flu. Saltine crackers have been my best friend for two days going on three now. I think we're on the tail end of it and blog hopping has certainly given me wonderful escapes from this miserable coughing and sneezing!! And...did I read correctly...future daughter in law?? Congratulations to you, your son, and your future DIL!

    1. Ugh...hope you all feel better! Our boys all have a head cold...not near as bad as a stomach bug. Yes, Taylor and his girl, Lauren, got engaged this past year. There's a July wedding in the works! :)

    We always have black-eyed peas and turnip greens... the meat you can vary, but not those two! ;) Money and luck... or so they say! Happy New Year! blessings ~ tanna

  15. I do like pork and kraut and this recipe you posted sounds delicious. I know there are several pork roasts in the freezer but I will need to get some kraut.
