Limenitis Arthemis Astyanax

Better know as the Red-Spotted Purple Butterfly!
Although, I think he looks blue!
He was flying around my backyard!
And the best part of this photo shoot was that right after I
snapped this photo, he flew over and sat on my shoulder!
I talked to him for a minute and he was very content to stay,
until I turned the camera around to take his picture there.
Then he flew off for the flowers again!

  1. Very pretty! I love that he sat on your shoulder even if you didn't get a picture.

On Monday morning of our vacation there were 2 "gifts" outside the door, a beautiful green Luna moth and a giant Cecropia moth, one on either side of the door. Totally awesome!

    1. I loved that he sat on my shoulder, too! Made me feel kind of special! ha. Now, those two moths...I've never seen either of them in person. Wow...that would be so neat! Did you get photos?

    2. Yes, I did take photos. I will post them soon.

    4. The Lunas are intriguing and beautiful! So neat that you got to see one! They are often hard to spot when they sit on plants. Lucky you!

    1. Did you find out it's name? There are some fun, easy-to-use identification sites online. It's fun to see some new ones!

    2. No haven't taken time for it yet but I want to. I thought of you when I saw it. Remembered that you post pics of winged critters like that now and then :)

    3. Yeah, this one had a happier ending. landing on my shoulder is much better than watching Marmalade swallow him! lol....

Is it hot enough for you? Some people around us don't have power. I'm so thankful that we do.
Our next door neighbor lost a huge tree in the storms last evening!

    4. Yes it's quite warm here. So thankful for AC!! No storms here, though we need rain! I keep watering the new grass in hopes it will survive. My sister in law lives in Antrim, Ohio (near Zanesville) they were told they probably won't get the power back on till Friday! Yikes! Glad you guys still have yours on!

      Delete
    5. Oh, I know. So very thankful for a/c. Oh my. We needed rain, too...still could use some more. It's very dry! Our whole yard is brown and crunchy. No power til Friday? Oh, that's awful.

      Delete
    6. Brown and Crunchy?! Wow! We're not quite that dry. Here and there is a cornfield with spikey corn but the yards are still green.

      Delete
    7. yeah, I hate brown crunchy grass! We could use a week of rain! I think the heat just advanced the seriousness of it.

  5. Wow I thought you caught some weird disease
Worse than fleas on knees hahaha
Then I though it was a bird
    That name is just absurd
    For a butterfly
That if the cat were to spy
    He would eat
    Like a tasty treat
    Nice to look at though
Hopefully avoided the cats at your show

    1. If we only knew Latin
those names wouldn't be so strat'n
      lol.
Oh, my cats would love him for dessert
or maybe an appetizer, with a burp.
      hahaha.

      Delete
    2. Yeah let's get on that
And then I'll be a latin speaking cat
      That would surely confuse
And more would say strat and abuse haha

      Delete
    3. If you learned Latin, you could be a doctor, too!
      and make more buckaroos!
or loonies and toonies, as you say
up there in the nova scotia bay.
      lol....

I was just thinking about butterflies in my garden and the fact that I haven't seen many. Maybe I need to plant flowers just to attract them.
