Planting A Kitchen Herb Garden

I planted some of my favorite herbs seeds today.
In no particular photo order, here's how I did it....

  1. I found a large metal tray on clearance from the Christmas decorations.  I painted over the brown and made it a grey and white with a distressed look to match my kitchen.
  2. Bought 4 inexpensive plastic planters, poked holes through the bottom and added an inch of gravel for drainage.
  3. Filled each with potting soil, added the seeds, and another 1/2 inch of soil.
  4. Line the pots up in the tray.
  5. For tags, I cut a thank you note I received in the mail this week into 1 inch strips.  Folding them in half and using hot glue, secured craft lollipop sticks into the fold and glued the open ends shut.  Label with marker.
  6. Water each carefully as to not disturb the seeds and lightly cover with plastic wrap to hold in moisture.
  7. In a week, I should have little sprouts!

    2. thank you. I hope to be able to set it outside when it is warm enough. If I have herbs outside in the summer, I think they do best in the shade and water them every day. Yes, you could plant some again...in pots so you can take inside when it gets cold. I bought extra seeds because sometimes in the middle of the summer, you can't find anymore! Dill and cilantro are my favorites.

    3. I think in cilantro too Betsy I used alot. Basil don resist the cold weather I know. But in spring is beauty.
      We use a lot basil.
Betsy Did you read in your post before I told you I loved your cup of tea?

    4. I don't use a lot of basil! I know it is very popular. What is wrong with me? lol. I planted chives and thyme, too.

Yes, I saw that...that tea was good with that little bit of citrus flavor, too! Do you like my little butterfly on the inside of the cup? ha.

    1. Gloria will be so proud of you using basil. I guess I should start! ha.

I know..look at those little guys. And a two year old, who was somewhere off camera getting into something, I'm sure. ha. Four hours of sleep a night back then. Crazy. I really don't remember most of it!

      Delete
    2. It's probably better not to remember. :) My second son was VERY colicky, and I have some memories of those days, but not many. I do remember crying in the shower because I was SO TIRED. :)

    3. Hi Rebecca, you made anice post today, inspired:)

      Delete
    4. You cry in the shower, too? ha. I rarely cry, but if I do, it's in the shower. I take mine at night and that's when I'm most tired...besides, I can cry and nobody knows it. lol.

you posted today...need to come take a look!

      Delete
    8. It must have something to do with finally relaxing in the hot shower and then we can't hold it in any longer. Yes, being tired has a lot to do with it.

      Delete
    9. yes when most tired Im is when I cry but sometimes I dont cry in months, but I hate it! I hate cry!

    10. I'm the same way...I really don't cry very often...I hate doing it!

  8. Cute idea.I have done it as well.I seem to like them now better outdoors.I will be planting some Greek Oregano,Thyme,Sage.

And let the bloody wankers be...LOL
    So fun to use
Will have to use that for a while to abuse..hahaha
    Neat idea as well
Sure Nugget might find it swell
If he wants a snack when they grow
And kind of hard to do it outdoors at your show
As I'm sure many a cat would dig around in there
Leaving thinks no so umm fair

    1. off rhyme...cuz I'm tired. ha.

You just reminded me that I brought in pots of herbs at the end of the summer and Nugget ate them down to the dirt one night while we were sleeping! haha...the perils of a rabbit running loose in the house. What a feast he had! lol.

I almost bought catnip seeds to plant for the cats but figured the poor plant would never have a chance to grow.

Oh yes...you will use that phrase to abuse...I knew that as soon as I told you. lol. We have swapped a few brain cells, though. I seem to recall you letting an 'oh dear' slip out a time or two. lol.

      Delete
    2. and Pat...aren't you glad I didnt use that in my review? lol...oh, now that would have been funny to view!
Better yet, to have seen your face
as you read it in disgrace.
      hahahaha.

      Delete
    3. hahaha would have made me smile though
As I knew where it came from at your show
And surely a brain cell or three
Has been swapped between each sea
I don't think the cat nip one would last either anywhere
For they would get it at any spot in your lair
Cassie just eats the plant no matter what it is
It's her mission to do so, she makes it her biz
Nugget prob that it was such a treat
As he chowed down and thumped his feet

      Delete
    4. Nugget probably thought it was his birthday, the little dear.
I'll have to remember to put them up higher this year.
He'll jump up on the couch but that's about it
he's never ventured to the counters, making me have a fit.
      ha.

      Delete
    5. haha maybe the cats will show him how its done
Then he'll just jump up for fun
      And go right to town
On whatever he decides to chow down

      Delete
    6. haha...I think he would need to grow out that puff ball of a tail for some balance. I can't seen him gracefully leaping down, either...it would sound more like a canon ball crashing on the floor. lol.

      Delete
    7. hahaha yeah I can see the cannonball coming
He'd probably rather stuff thumping and humming
      Giving a little yelp
So you would come and help

  10. fun fun! I planted some things today too! Herbs and spinach, radishes, lettuce, onion sets and pansies, etc. Couldn't help myself anymore, had to do it :)It was 76° when I went to pick the kids up from school!! More of the same through Friday, and 3 of the kids have the rest of the week off. I'm so happy for them that they can enjoy the beautiful weather outside!

  11. Between these picture of you starting your herb garden and the warm weather we have been having, I am wondering if I should start some vegetable seedlings early this year.

Love the baby photo of the triplets.

And, I never saw a cup of tea that looked as beautiful as the one in your header!

    1. the weather does give you spring fever, doesn't it? It would be a miracle if we didn't have another snow, though.

Would Kai like to plant the seeds? Could be fun!

Thanks regarding the cup of tea. It tasted yummy, too!

      Delete
    2. Yes, Kai actually does like to help plant seeds, at least for short periods of time. Though after awhile he'd rather dump out the watering can into the dirt and then dump mud all over himself.

No more snow this season! (Just don't remind me of this when I'm wrong).

    3. Maybe this year will be different. It's amazing how kids change in a year.

Even though I love winter, I hope you're right and we've truly begun spring. Once I have spring fever, I don't want to go back! Today was just about perfect. Although, my itchy allergy eyes began...right on time. haha.

Hey, your Swanson's package should be arriving soon!

      Delete
    4. My allergies have started, too, though I think it's earlier than usual. Had to go buy Allegra today.

We got the dual-release melatonin yesterday and tried it for the first time last night. So far, it is not having the desired effect... he isn't falling asleep as fast as he was under the previous melatonin, but he still woke up at 1 AM. But, let's see if it is better tonight.

      Delete
    5. oh, I hope he falls asleep better tonight. I wonder if you could give both the old and new. Yes, 1am is way too early..haha..I'm usually not in bed until midnight!

  14. I love using fresh herbs! Starting them now will make them grow big enough to be trandsplanted outside in May, if you want a larger crop. In the meantime they will brighten your windowsill :)

  18. I too hope you will show pictures as they grow. I need to get to it if I am going to grow any. Just have to find where the pots are. Basil is so good when it is fresh. I have a mint plant that grows like a weed. I have heard that can happen to them if you do not constantly cut it back. Smells good though.

Best of luck with your endeavor.

    God bless.
