Unless you're talking ice cubes in your lemonade!
A lot of people around us have been without
power now for 24 hours! We've been fortunate! Still, ice
can be beautiful if you are cozy inside and looking out!
It was not so nice driving to an auction today!
Our village looks like a war zone with limbs down and
some trees destroyed. You can't tell any borders
between yards, curbs or our street...just one
big frozen lake! And the wind blew 40 mph today!
But there is some beauty even so...like red cranberrieswaiting like frozen treats for the Starlings.
Mr. Cardinal keeping a watch out for hawks while he lets Mrs. Cardinal enjoy some dinner!
The big mountain of snow on the feeder has turned to icicles!
and the pines have a sparkle to them!
Reminds me of the Owl City song, The Saltwater Room,
"I guess I'll never know why sparrows love the snow..."

Ice on branches does look pretty, but weather like this is best enjoyed when seen through a window. All we need is a few hot days and everyone here in New England will be surfing to visit you in Ohio!

ReplyDeleteAn ice storm is one of the most beautiful acts of nature. Went through a bad one in 1998. We lost power 4 days but some folks were without for 10-11 days. We had two woodstoves so we were okay.
ReplyDeleteAnd JILL ~ if you read this...we think we lost our Magnolia tree! :( The ice was just too heavy for it...bending it clear to the ground and breaking some of the main center branches. Now that part IS sad!

There is something almost magical and mystical about an ice storm. Familiar objects grow eerie and well known places turn foreign. There are tree limb "gunshots" in the night, and shattered glass ice drops from the heights as the temperatures rise. For months it will look as though a giant weed whacker has been through. It was April for us and the ice didn't stay too long but the power was out for four days at our house and longer at others.

ReplyDeleteThere was a bad one when I was in high school in the 70's. And a bad one in the mid 80's. We lost power then for days and lost a tank full of salt water fish. ugh.

ReplyDeleteI hope you get your power back soon. One of my favorite memories is of an ice storm, some great neighbors, a half of beef that had just been bought to freeze. We had the only grill. :) We ate like kings for a week.

Yet again, wonderful pictures Betsy. I think we have the balance just about right : you suffer from all that cold and ice and take the photographs whilst we can sit in our warm rooms and enjoy looking at them.

ReplyDeleteAs inconvenient as well as right down dangerous sometimes, the ice and snow sure add sparkle and beauty to the world (at least for a little while, then it gets right down sloppy and messy). Beautiful photos of winter.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever seen everything coated in ice like that, we don't tend to get ice storms here in that way. Luckily the pretty birds seem to be warm and fluffy still.

Thanks, Justin. I have a new camera and am still learing how to use it. It's a Nikon Coolpix P100. It has a 26x wide zoom on it. I still need to read the book! ha.
