And...IF YOU DRAW THEM, THEY WILL COME!

After I had this post in draft form and ready to go, look who I saw outside my window! Mr. Hairy Woodpecker! Now, how's that for timing? :)

He's the first one in our yard that I've seen in a couple of years!

Coincidence? :)

  1. He was peeking in your window to see if you captured his beauty....and you did!! He sure pecked out the year didn't he!!?

When I was in the first grade I had to say a poem in front of my class'

"The woodpecker pecked out a little round hole, and made him a home in a telephone pole."

    Cute idea...I love it!

  3. Awwww, cute. 2011 in woodpecker-speak.

  4. Silver ~ I thought you'd like his mask! ;)

  5. Maybe he needs a cape to complement the mask, and to keep him warm. Wonder where he could find a cape in Ohio...

  6. Well, you KNOW he came to the right place for that! Birds...they know everything, right? Just like the phrase "a little birdie told me"? haha

  10. Endeavour to Keep all Resolutions . .hahahaha . .oh yeah. I love your birdie! I don't think we have woodpeckers here unless they come the size of chickens and look like sulphur crested cockatoos that cause a heap of damage if you have any oregon wood on your house!

  11. I love your drawing and the play with words and what a serendipitous occurrence for you to see a woodpecker in reality as well.;))

  15. If you call it no talent required drawing, I am sorry, I disagree. Your drawing of the woodpecker is awesome. Clever little woodpecker pecked in 2011 on the tree. Isn't it fun when the different birds come to visit?

  16. What a cool woodpecker! I am so excited that you also were able to attract the real thing! We have so many around that I definetly take them for granted... reminds me to spend a few extra bits admiring them -- they are so fantastic! Happy New Year Besty!

  18. He is so beautiful. I do not see them much but HEAR them. Maybe I need to feed them the RIGHT food.

GREAT sketch! I like the puzzle piece-like bark on the tree.

  19. That's a cool picture (although I thought woodpeckers had more red on their heads, or haven't you ever heard of Woody?) Ever think of illustrating any graphic literature?

And I understand what you mean about being a Harrison Fisher girl. He's very popular with the ladies, whether you know him from Star Wars or Raiders of the Lost Ark!

  20. Sharp-eyed Reader ~ you are so cute and quirky. :) I think that's Harrison Ford, dear.

And did you know that there are 200 species of woodpeckers? This one is the Hairy Woodpecker. The one you're thinking of is the Pileated Woodpecker. :)

And thanks for visiting! I haven't seen you around in a while!

  23. Great job, Betsy!
I also love that your drawing brought you the real thing!

Last night I was reading my mom some "Spencer entries" here (we had been talking about tootsie pops earlier and I mentioned Spencer's love for them), and she says you are her hero. She kept sitting here with her mouth open while I was reading and then saying "She's Awesome!"

    You have a fan

  28. you gave me a nice memory - one of my few good memories of country life was hearing woodpeckers. They sounded so determined.

Your woodpecker is amazing! Nice sketch. :)

PS -- Sorry to cause any confusion....the linky link on my page is for Sunday Sketches. I did link back to Mr. Toast's for CT. I probably won't combine the two in the future. Only did so due to holidays. Thanks! :)

  33. Your little sketch is great. I love it when coincidences happen! I was listening to a BBC radio programme about them once and they were interviewing people on the street. The first person they spoke to was a university professor (or something like that) and he was in the middle of conducting his own enquiry into them. Now how's that for a coincidence!

  34. Fun drawing, I really like the woodpeckers sketch!
