Mouse Musings

There are only a few things I dislike about the cooler weather.
The first 20 years of living in this house we had cats. We
would get the occasional mouse, but they never survived
very long! It's not quite the same with a rabbit!
Even though he's housebroken and runs free inside,
Nugget is not a hunter! No, he's scared of raccoons and
cats that occasionally come up onto our back porch,
even though he is twice the size of a grown cat.
As a result, we had two families of mice set up housekeeping
with us last year. Not fun! We had the smartest mice
in the state of Ohio! I swear they were like the mouse in
the photo! They could eat peanut butter off of a trap and
not set it off! But we finally FINALLY won and trapped
all 10 of them. Yes, ten! Ugh. Hopefully we will not
repeat that saga this year!

  1. I really dislike the mice thing. That is the bad part about fall, for sure! I already have a trap set by the back door. That's the hot spot! lol

  2. hi Betsy
ugg on the mice! but I am just as happy you are that you've caught them. They are nasty little things that get into exactly what you don't want them in.
We had mice when we lived in the country but not a single one since we've moved to town.

  3. Would you believe that a dog I had caught mice. He was very good at it too. These days we have two cats who frequently show us their catch.

  4. Our little village is surrounded by corn fields...which doesn't help at all! ha.

  5. Matty ~ he must be a true hunting dog! and cats do love to show off their catches, don't they? I miss mine!

  6. i think my cat would watch them...and maybe yawn...no mice here...just these darn stink bugs...

  7. When we had a mouse this spring I bought traps that the mouse goes right inside so I never had to look at it. A bit more expensive but in the end, worth it. In reality, I guess mice are pretty cute but not in my house! Hope you got them all . . .

  8. This reminds me of a time when I needed a cheap car, really quickly, and purchased one for $550 that had been parked in a field for some time. It came complete with a family of mice in the trunk!

Remind me to give you a little more detail sometime.

  10. Oh Betsy ~ That is the cutest picture. I love it.

We always had cats, and NO mice. Then several of my grandchildren became allergic to cats and they had to go....and then the mice came back. I've done that mouse trap thing.....if you can get the whole family...you're in good shape!

  11. I hate mice, they scare me for some crazy reason. I have also saw signs of them, first time in years. We have several animals and feed in the barns, so I know that brings them , plus the weather change.

  12. I never realized what a good mouse trap our cat was until he was gone. Just yesterday we noticed a mouse had taken up residence in our grill. Yuck. I once pointed to a mouse on our deck and the dogs ran past it into our neighbors yard. This could be a long winter!

  13. 10! Oh, my, that is crazy.

Did you show what's-his-name, you know, Taylor's friend, that picture? I know since I hate spiders that even when I see pictures I shudder, so maybe he would too. ;)

  16. Poor litle mousies... I had pet mice when I was a child. Then, some years ago when I lived in the country the farmer burned some of his fields and I was inundated with mice - so now I know just what you guys are going through. Eventually my dog started catching them - thing is, he swallowed them whole and I could hear the squeaking all the way d-o-w-n...

  17. I think your photo is a perfect depiction of those sneaky little boogers! Fortunately for us, we have Velvet, the assasin. She barely weighs over six pounds, long white hair (not one ever out of place) and looks like a little angel... she WILL kill you (if you are a mouse, a lizard, a bird, or a squirrel intruding in her territory).

  18. I love drawing them...but not finding them! ha. ha. ha. that's a great photo!!!

  20. adeeyoyo ~ OH MY GOODNESS!! That would just creep me out! Ugh. Oh, I am laughing. The squeaking would be TOO much! haha.

  21. OH NO!!!! I hate it when we have mice, too! I am so glad you conquered your mice:-) We had mice last year when we were away taking Cheney to college and kept getting these frantic calls from Bethany in the middle of the night;-)

  22. Fingers crossed that the mice play in someone elses home this year. I hate mice!

  23. Kayren ~ that would be Daniel. Poor guy...he's probably still traumatized from last year...and yes, that was one of the 10! :)

  24. Did you find where they were coming in? I hate them too....they are just too quiet/ha

  26. I could never bring myself to use a mouse trap, it would feel a little bit like killing Stuart Little. :p Thankfully we don't get many mice down south, mostly lizards, and my cat Olivia takes care of the occasional stray that manages to weasle it's way in without my having to witness it. I hope you don't get many this year!

  27. P.s- Nugget is precious. I've always wanted a bunny but they just never seemed like a very practical pet--I didn't realize you could house train them and let be free around the house! How did you do it?!

  28. That photo is so funny! I swear I know that mouse.

Hands down, that worst thing about living alone is having to trap all the mice myself! I had three about a month and a half ago that I thought I would never get...but I'm persistent and they are gone now. I hope they are the only ones I have this fall...ugh...I hate them!!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. ps....I might have had to move out if I'd had 10!

  30. A ~ well, i thought the mice were cute at first...but when they chew through boxes of food and leave droppings all over, you get over that really fast! Yuck.

Nugget was easy to housebreak...he seemed to want to use a litter box. It took 2 days! He loves to be petted but not picked up...which I miss from having cats before.

  31. Stevie ~ Oh, I agree! I set the traps but beg a man here to remove the mice once caught. I've done it myself, but very reluctantly. ugh.

  32. Mice are not fun. all the best.

  34. Here in Arizona we get to enjoy the mice coming in from the cold and the heat. Especially, if you live in an old place like my Mom's. :)

  35. Mice are icky.

I like the new photo of Betsy on the side bar. You look fun-loving. Which you are, no?

  36. Bwahahahahahahaaaa...HA! **sniff** sorry Betsy but this reminded me o' th' mice Mom had in th' ol' house she used to rent. Little buggers would steal th' dog's food and stash it in various piles...everywhere!

You could here 'em in th' walls at night...skritch, skritch, skritching away... 8^[]

  37. Hi Subs! :)

I've never heard of mice stashing dog food! Ours just munched through cereal boxes, things like that....never stored it away for later.

My freshman year in college I lived in a very old dorm and we could hear rats running in the ceiling...really awful since I was on the top bunk just inches away! Yikes!

  38. Brenda ~ oh my...I'm not even going to ask how you know that! YIKES!
