New Socks

Remember that excited feeling you got as a kid when you
got your school supplies at the end of the summer?
That anticipation as you picked out a brand new box
of crayons, the folders, and glue? I got a little twinge of
that feeling myself today as it is FINALLY August!
I can ever so slightly feel I'm on the home stretch of
having three autistic teenagers home 24/7 for the summer!
While in Walmart today I picked up a few things a little early.
I picked up 12 pairs of socks for the boys. I know we'll need
more as this will only last 4 days! It sounds like enough, but
you never know when you might have 'the week from hell' and
not get to the laundry! And in this family, there is more than
one 'week from hell' during a school year, let me tell you! LOL!
Their socks were old and tired and needing to be put out of
their misery! LOL! Betcha can't tell which one is new and
which one is tired! haha. And yes, that's a hole in the heel!
New socks were certainly overdue! You really don't notice
how bad they are until you get the new ones and compare!
Oh my!
So, two more dozen socks, new shoes, and a few articles of
clothing to round our their wardrobes, plus the regular
stuff like markers and pencils and we should be set.
Thank goodness the backpacks and lunchboxes still
have some life in them and won't be replaced! :)

  1. My son loves his old socks and hates new ones, go figure. I am with you on the backpacks and lunchboxes. They only get replaced if necessary. We go back to school this Thursday.

  3. Are you sure you weren't in my grandsons dresser drawers????

I see those socks every weekend the boys come to stay.

Noting better than new socks, new pencils etc. In fact I went to Aaron Bros this week for some supplies and felt like a little girl getting ready for school.

  6. Is it funny how we can get so excited about new socks.
I'm looking forward to seeing the boys picture of their first day. I remember last years picture.

  7. yep, you got your moneys worth from the old socks I think.
and my advice on socks, buy all the same brand and throw away the old ones - so when you are folding the laundry, all the socks have to match up.

    Yay for school starting soon!

  8. When my boys were in school we had a tradition of replacing all the old socks at the beginning of each school year. That's also when I did an underwear/t-shirt check and replaced as needed. Each male in the house (including Hubby) had their own brand of shirts and underwear so it was easier for me to fold and put away--and figure out whose dirty things were still on the ground!

    I miss those days.

  12. I got new socks for Caboose because so many of his had to be thrown out because of holes. The seams in the toes of the new ones are bumpy on the ends and drive him nuts. I end up cutting them off and then making holes in the toes. I foresee getting new socks AGAIN.

I bet we could all put boys' sock pictures up and they'd all look pretty much the same. Holes included. I've gotten to the point that when they come through the wash and I'm folding that I just throw out the ones with the holes, unless they are teeny.

  13. I did the school supply list shopping today. My daughter starts back to school tomorrow. It's amazing because it's still so hot here. But they get a break in October and March beside the Christmas break and are out in May. Makes for a long school year.

  17. Hang in there. I just told hubby this morning that I was spending the first day of school at my favorite thirft store and I'd go grocery shopping on the second day of school. Yeah, I buy groceries during the summer but with both kids along and never being organized enough to acutally take a list I don't get much accomplished other than flamin' hot cheetos and frozen burritos!

Ugh, shopping for school clothes, the nightmare begins!

  19. We never had that concept of "back to school" sales and such. No one I knew growin gup ever got supllies replenished as one sort of did that as needs came, but as it was, most stuff continued from semester to semester and we never used pencils or glue come to think of it 1Lol. Still, I can imainge how fun that would be. Do the trips get excited like that too?

  20. I was packing Son up for vacation at his fathers and he didn't have ANY socks. I have no idea where they went! lol They must grow feet and walk.

  21. AmyLK ~ that IS a mystery, isn't it? Where do the lost socks go? I've always wondered that! I think the dryer eats them! ha.

  22. I'm grinning because your comparison photos immediately brought back a mental image of my sons' socks....they were usually brown and hard...so disgusting! And that was after they were washed.

  23. Ah Betsy, using socks to mark the passage of time and new socks to proclaim the end of summer. As creative and original as ever. And having survived the summer, as patient and caring as ever. As the young tend to say these days : "respect".

  24. Alan ~ you, sir, are one of my favorite cheerleaders! :) Not to mention you are practically related since you look just like my Uncle Steve! LOL!

  26. I loved going out for school supplies as a kid. It was almost like a holiday. Unfortunately, these days one must go out in early August (and in some cases July) in order to get them while the getting is good. If my memory serves me correctly, we often didn't get our "list" until the first day of school. That means we didn't shop for crayons and paper until September.
