It was Alex's turn to go to the grocery with me this week.
I will admit that I wasn't looking forward to it after
that trip with Spencer! LOL! And since I had to go
to both Kroger and Sam's Club, I was fearful that
it would be too much for him...and me! And I almost
just went by myself. You know that 'hanging by a
thread' feeling? I had it...and just wasn't feeling
strong enough for an outing with him. But I
knew that I would be disappointed in myself for
not getting him out of the house this week.
They need as much socialization as possible, even
if it's more work for me.
He only does this when he's anxious about something.
Awww...poor buddy. He had a little smirk on his face
at the same time, though, so maybe it was more just
anticipation instead of anxiety. I told him it was going
to be fun...food, after all, is his favorite thing! ha.
Here's that smirk I'm talking about. It's almost as if
he's trying not to smile! ha. He's so much better at
pushing the cart than Spencer...I only held on to the
front to steer instead of holding back the speed. :)
And because he was slower, I actually got pictures,
unlike Spencer's trip where I was on speed control
the whole time...saving lives of other shoppers!
See my tomato plants? Already in big pots and a nice
trellis. I can't seem to talk anybody at home into
running the tiller in the garden for me. I've decided
we won't do the garden. Instead of nagging, I'll just
hand over the receipt for 2 potted plants. ha.
Reminds me of that Ruth Graham quote, "There
comes a time for a wife to stop submitting and
start outwitting!" I so love that!
"Mom...please...this is getting embarrassing! Nobody else has their camera in here!"
We went through the drive thru at Burger King. I told Alex if he did the 'sign' for 'please' that he could have super-sized french fries. I even caught it on camera...although a bit blurry! :) The sign is an open hand like he is doing, and you rub in a circle on your chest. And he enjoyed his fries as we drive home!I was so glad he came along!
Harry is next week! :)
This take me back to scenes of my childhood where my brother gobbled down his sandwich, fries, and milkshake, and then proceeded to ask for ours, mostly with his eyes. I think maybe he would do anything for food.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your outing with Alex wasn't quite the workout you got with Spencer.
Martha, I think Alex and your brother have a LOT in common! LOL! Alex will always ask for our food and actually gets quite irritated if we say no.
ReplyDeleteHe's also been known to swipe food from strangers at McDonald's. So very embarrassing! LOL!
glad this one was a bit more tame...lol. i'll carry the groceries for fries too!
ReplyDeleteSo cute! I just love the photo of the crossed fingers. And now I know the sign for please...looks like I get to super size my fries too! :-)
ReplyDeleteBrian ~ it was SO much better...even the weather! ha. And $2.15 for fries was better than all those DVD's! ha.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you're investing the time in taking the boys out. Alex looks like he's really enjoying it! Love his crossed fingers.
ReplyDeleteAnd, hey, it's more fun with your new car!!
ReplyDeleteGlad you had a good trip. Years ago when my boys did the "big" grocery shopping at Aldi with me I let them each pick out something to buy...it really improved their manners in the store!
ReplyDeleteYour little man looks like he is having a good time. It's those little {big} things.
ReplyDeletexoxo
Jane
I love his sweet crossed fingers - and you are a great mom to not just take the easy way
ReplyDeleteyep, a large fries is much cheaper than 3 dvds.
and by the way, How does Spencer like the one about illegal immigration?
Betsy, I'm so glad you got pictures. Love the crossed fingers, and the fries...
ReplyDeleteCan't wait til next week and your trip with Harry. It's been a long time since I took children to the grocery store.
Now it's to the Park.
How fun...and I love the quote about women! That looks like it was fun for him and you...thats so great! :D
ReplyDeleteRhonda ~ Spencer never took the cellophane off when we got home! That night I hid it away so I could return it! ;)
ReplyDeleteYeah, Alex! And, yeah Betsy! You're a trooper.
ReplyDeleteThere aren't words really to describe the selflessness, pain, and joy of motherhood. But, your blog does a pretty good job of it.
Tracey ~ thank you! I'm so glad I didn't leave him at home...I actually enjoyed him...the little sweetheart! ;)
ReplyDeleteSo glad you ended up having a good outing! And, I love the Ruth Graham quote! Ha! Ha! Great photos.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice that this trip was uneventful, in terms of anything "bad" that might have happened.
ReplyDeleteI love the smile that accompanied Alex's sign for please. No ketchup? Lucky you . . .
ReplyDeleteCorners ~ you know, Alex LOVES ketchup...but not on his fries. :) Yes, lucky me in the car!
ReplyDeleteYou are such a good Momma! They are blessed to have you.
ReplyDeleteYou are such a good Momma! They are blessed to have you.
ReplyDeleteIt's so hard to find time to spend with each child alone, isn't it? The grocery store is a good idea. I'm lost as a goose if I have all three of mine with me...I get home with a lot of stuff I didn't mean to buy and without a lot of stuff I actually needed. One kid at a time could be a time for talking and teaching and just spending some quality individual time together. :)
ReplyDeleteYour strength and kind judegement were rewarded by a pleasant and enjoyable trip with Alex. I too love the crossed fingers and have heard the "no one else has a camera" comment myself. Wonderful memories.
ReplyDeleteAw, what a blessing that turned out to be!! Lurve the pics!
ReplyDeleteThese posts are so fun. I can't wait to read Harry's.
ReplyDeletelovely images...
ReplyDeletebe natural, no shame.
Love this...the hands with the fingers crossed was so sweet!
ReplyDeleteGlad you were able to have a good day and make some memories with Alex!
French Fries for a visit to the Grocery Store? That's a great deal. I should try convincing my mom to buy me candies!
ReplyDeleteI'll be reading Spencer's trip now...:)
I enjoy these stories so much Betsy! It makes my world seem like everyone else's. LOL!
ReplyDeleteAs soon as we got our luggage rack loaded into the elevator at the hotel my son decided he didn't do elevators and wouldn't get in. It had never been a problem before! I barely got my hand around the rack to hold the door open. He decided he'd rather take his chances in the elevator than be left behind so he JUMPED in.
The only thing I had asked him to carry was a large mocha frappacino I had picked up at the last stop. (We make a lot of stops when traveling!)Of course he dropped it and it went all over the elevator and us. When we all got out I tried holding the door open while I use the courtesy phone on the outside to call the lobby so they could clean it up without someone getting in and slipping. Evidently if you hold the door open too long the alarm goes off... I had to let it go! Can you imagine when those doors opened for the next person? I sure hope it was the cleaning crew! You are so right about having to laugh...
You're such a great storyteller, Betsy! I enjoyed Alex's adventure:) And somehow I missed Spencer's, so I went back and read about that one, too. And laughed my head off! LOL
ReplyDeleteBetsy,
ReplyDeleteI'm sure each of the boys feel pretty special when you take them out separately... what a fun time for them!....those fries look yummy!
Love your header!
:) The Bach
That was fun! Fries...his version of chips for the day...had to be a form of potatoes!
ReplyDeleteYou are such a great mom!
ReplyDeleteI haven't forgotten you! Maybe we'll get a moment to chat & pick a date on Saturday.
I am so glad you and Alex had a good shopping trip!!! love all of the pictures!!
ReplyDeleteWow your tomato plant looks like it is half grown/ha Is it blooming?
nanny ~ those tomato plants were big! And they had flowers AND some fruit already! yea!
ReplyDeleteThis was such a fun and heartwarming post. Aren't you glad you listed to your heart and not your head! It looks like Alex had a ball!
ReplyDeleteBetsy, I'm glad the shopping trip this week went smoother than last weeks. I still remember the time I broke down in a department store and cried in front of the sales clerk because it was so hard shopping with two babies.
ReplyDeleteI love love love that Ruth Graham quote. I'm copying it into my quotes book right now!
Stevie ~ I think that is my favorite quote EVER! ha.
ReplyDeleteLinda ~ I'm so glad you stopped by! Thank you...it's always great to meet new people here!
ReplyDeleteWhen I first saw the picture of his fingers crossed, I thought maybe he was nervous about your driving;-) I am so glad your trip was so nice! God knew you were hanging by a thread and you needed a nice day out with one of your guys:-)
ReplyDeleteHeather! Just what are you saying about my driving? LOL! No, the guys don't have any of those healthy fears..they'll walk out in traffic, etc. Although, nobody should be scared of me behind the wheel! haha.
ReplyDeleteYEAH for Alex and YEAH for you! So glad you had a trip WITHOUT incident!
ReplyDeleteI think you should have bought FOUR tomato plants!
Love the crossed fingers!
ReplyDeleteRuth Gordon was a little spitfire wasn't she? Love the quote! I see that little smirk...so cute! I am glad he had such a great outing! I know you don't need anymore "men"...but I want you to know that the Colonel has become an admirer if not an official follower! He frequently asks for an update.
ReplyDeleteFirelight ~ tell The Colonel that I'm honored...and he's welcome any time! :)
ReplyDeleteAwww this is so sweet and i love his darling smirk. Hee. Hmm...sounds like oyu outwitted him yourself with that drive thru. Clever girl.
