Theme Thursday = Halloween

I was surprised when so many of my readers hadn't heard about the superstition of holding your breath while going by a cemetery when I mentioned it in my post this week! So, I thought I'd look it up. Not only did I find it in Google, but I found some other interesting superstitions that are perfect for the Halloween Theme Thursday! My editorial comments are in italics.
Superstitions about Death

BIRD~~ A bird in the house is a sign of a death.
(Does this include my parakeets?)
If a robin flies into a room through a window, death will shortly follow.
(I've always associated Robins with spring, never with death!) CEMETERY~~ You must hold your breath while going past a cemetery
or you will breathe in the spirit of someone
who has recently died. (see??)
CLOCK~~ If a clock which has not been working suddenly chimes,
there will be a death in the family.
CORPSE~~ If a woman is buried in black,
she will return to haunt the family.
(oh great, now I'm going to have
to insist on picking out the outfits
of all future female family corpses!)
DREAMS~~ If you touch a loved one who has died,
you won't have dreams about them
(oh great, not only do I have to pick
out their burial clothes, but I have to touch them, too?)
DYING~~ A person who dies on Good Friday will go right to heaven.
(hmmm..I wonder where you go
'straight to' if you die on Friday the 13th? ha!)
EYE~~ If the left eye twitches there will soon be a death in the family.
(my left eye twitches when I'm really tired...uh oh!)
FUNERAL~~
It's bad luck to meet a funeral procession head on.
(yikes...I just did this during that traffic jam this week!)
Thunder following a funeral means
that the dead person's soul has reached heaven.
(wouldn't a rainbow be more appropriate?)
Nothing new should be worn to a funeral, especially new shoes.
(I bet a lot of new black shoes and clothes are
worn to funerals!)
Pregnant women should not attend funerals.
(I did this when my uncle died!)
PHOTOGRAPH~~ If 3 people are photographed together,
the one in the middle will die first.
(hmm..being the middle child,
I think I was always photographed in the middle!)
So there you have it!
Happy Theme Thursday, all!

  3. Amazing how people really believed in this stuff back then. Did they have anything to base it on or do you think they were just boorish, control freaks??

Thanks for looking this up and sharing it!! :-)

  10. ha! Your commentary cracked me up! :) I actually do hold my breath when I drive past a cemetery for that exact reason. No joke. People already think I'm possessed, no need to make their accusations accurate.

  11. OMG!! That was really creepy! REALLY!!!

  12. I love this! You KNOW I have a bird "THING" and so I believe in the bad luck of having ANY bird in my house!

  14. I once took my young children to picnic in a cemetery. It was so beautiful and VERY quiet!
They still talk about that day.

  15. Christians always seem to be obscessed with death. Why?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Keith ~ gosh, I don't think Christians believe these things...far from it, actually! Where did you get that idea?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Christine ~ I bet that was a very quiet picnic! And they didn't think it was kinda creepy?

  18. One, I thought it was sparrows that were the signs of death... something from that movie with that one chick.
Also, I don't think it's true about touching a corpse. When I was 12 my Grandpa died and I couldn't resist touching him. I'm pretty sure I still dream about him, but maybe not. Maybe I only think about him when I am awake, I'll have to let you know on that one.
    Great post!

  20. Sorry Willow ~ being in the middle for all those pictures growing up, I guess I'll be going first! Just don't let them give me a Miami tan face. ha! On second thought, let's just do a closed casket.

  22. Fascinating to read! It seems people always tried to have some control over the unexplained aspects of life....what do we have now? Urban Legends Passed around in e-mail ...lol!

Happy Halloween to you and your family, Betsy!

  23. Very educational...and well done! I always wonder how these things ever came to be?

    Damn, girl! Get some sleep!

  25. We're always bumpng into funeral processions! Gulp!

    ReplyDelete
  26. We grew up down the road from a cemetery and always held our breath! Sheesh! Why don't people know the important stuff?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Gaelikaa ~ Well, I'm not sure what you can do in that circumstance. It just doesn't seem right to make a big old U-turn right in front of them! ha!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Some of these I have also heard but some I have not. It is amazing how we relate to death and the end of life.

  29. I saw on your sidebar that you're stripping wallpaper, which room, and I'm sure you'll take pictures, right? Do you make your own egg rolls? So far, I haven't found any in a grocery store that we like, so I just buy them from the local Chinese restaurant when we have Chinese food.

  30. This was a fun post. I'd never heard of most of these superstitions. It is amazing what people will believe.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Melissa ~ well, it's the boys' computer room...a very neglected place that is crying for some TLC! :) I'll do a post or two on it as I progress.

I buy eggs rolls at Sams Club. I deep fry them so they are nice and crispy, just as if you were at the Chinese restaurant. I've never made my own...sounds like a lot of work. ha!

  32. My grandparents grew up in Appalachia and I'm still amazed at all the superstitions they believed in.

    Love the post!

    ReplyDelete
  33. They sound like games my teenagers come up with randomly! hahaha

    Happy Halloween!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Here's one for you... lifting your feet when driving over railroad tracks.

    That one still befuddles me.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think I recommended this film to your sis, Betsy, but you must order "The Woman in Black" on Netflix and watch it straight away. It is without question THE creepiest thing ever put on film! (And it is fantastic!)

I knew that about the cemetery. I back onto one and I'm getting a little blue just lately with all this breath-holding. ha ha

  36. Jeffscape ~ wow...I've never heard that one! I wonder what the reasoning is?! Too funny!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Kat ~ oooh...never heard of that movie...I'll check it out! It's the perfect time of year for a creepy one!

  38. Thinking back on old family photos, youngest sister was usually placed between oldest and middle sister ~ I don't think I will share this little tidbit with her. Thanks for the fun post!

  39. Great post. I wasn't aware of any of these superstitions...

    ReplyDelete
  40. Who would have guessed there were so many superstitions and that is probably only a few.

My best memories as a child was playing in the cemetery....and I never held my breath.

Thanks for all the info ~ Really interesting.

    LOL:Wanda

  41. Your commentary is so funny.

I'm always scared to read about superstitions--I have a tendency to take them too seriously, even though I know they're silly!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Interesting stuff there! I just left Sheila's Note Songs blog where she had photos of a cemetary in England (I think, I got so spooked I don't know for sure!)where Dracula lived/died/haunts. I think I'm done blogging for today!

I really just wanted to let you know I'm having a giveaway if you get a chance to come by before next Tues. night.
    Hugs,
    Dawn

  43. Gee, I must have a whole community of departed souls living in me; I hang out a lot in cemeteries and breathe the whole time I'm there. But it doesn't feel crowded in here!

As for not burying a woman in a black dress... I wonder if the rise in cremation has lessened the incidence of family hauntings?

    ReplyDelete
  44. I have heard several of these rules before. The one about the bird is pretty popular around my town. After a bird flew into my house, a few years ago, a coworker was VERY concerned about a death happening. One never did. You gotta love these "old wives tales".

    ReplyDelete
  45. Farmchick ~ oh, that's interesting. The bird superstition was a new one to me! I'm sure before screens were invented, quite a few birds would find their way through windows during the warm weather!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Mr. Fox ~ ha!, yes, maybe I better turn in early tonight...for the sake of the family, you know!

    ReplyDelete
  47. after reading all that, I'm in alot of trouble!

    ReplyDelete
  48. In Greece when we go by a cemetary we shake our bodies saying "move from your sit"! It is amazing how many things are different from country to country and still so much the same :)

    Happy Halloween
    xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  49. Marianna ~ that's a different one! I'm not even sure what that means, 'move from your sit'. Whatever it is, I'm sure it means 'don't get me!' hee!

    ReplyDelete
  50. "(hmmm..I wonder where you go
'straight to' if you die on Friday the 13th? ha!) "
--Heeheehee. Dear oh dear. That's funny.

Reminds me of that preview clip I saw a while back where someone says that when they saw Grandpa die the candle flickered as if it was his sign he was passing on to heaven. Someone else replies, "Dude, you don't pass through flames on your way there! It must be ....the other place" pointing down! Ha.

I'm the middle child too but as we rarely got pics of all three of us I think I'm ok there.

And, btw, perhaps rainbows couldn't be used for someone going to heaven as that's already used as a sing for no more worldwide floods!

Enjoy you day. I totally spaced Theme Thursday.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Mmm ~ oh yes, that's true about the rainbow. But thunder just doesn't seem appropriate, doesn it? At least they could have heard angels singing or something a little more pleasant! hee!

Middle child, huh...I knew we had some sort of connection! ;)

  52. Good Halloween warnings. I'll be careful when attending funerals in the future...sounds like it is a dangerous place to be.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Thanks for sharing.. I had never heard of many of these superstitions..What a fun read!

    Happy Halloween!

  54. I didn't know any of these!
