Alex, How Far You Have Come!

For any typical kid, this lunch look pretty average.
But for any mom dealing with kids with autism and all of their
crazy food obsessions, this roast beef on whole wheat sandwich
and fruit salad is amazing! There was a time when Alex ate
only yogurt and potato chips.....really...every meal...and
nothing else! He's doing better than his brothers in this
area and usually will eat or at least try everything I make
for dinner. It's so easy to look at how far they still need to
go and not look back on how far they have come!

  5. I'd love to know how things played out with your guys eating new foods. Did you do anything in particular to encourage them or did it just happen naturally. Billy is extremely picky, having the same lunch and dinner nearly every day. He has tried a couple of new things over the summer but only liked fish sticks. I do see some promise there but I wonder if I will cook a grilled cheese sandwich every night forever. :)

  7. Yea Alex! That is quite a healthy meal.

My youngest son was my pickiest eater. He's 25 now and he amazingly likes vegetables. I never thought I would see the day!

  10. My granddaughter eats so few things and I always wonder if she will ever try new things. Alex was having a great meal. Avery is going to Hawaii for almost 2 weeks with her other grandparents and I can't imagine what she'll eat. Macaroni and cheese would get so boring for me, but not her.

  12. It's hard enough making dinner as it is, let alone with such preferences. I really don't know how you do it, but you do. Keep plugging along. :)

  13. wow that is great for him! Noah is still stuck in the very selective stage....eating few things and over and over again! He would never dream of trying anything on that plate...but it is great to know Alex is and trying more things you make!

  19. Trishy ~ well, it's been a long haul! They are almost 16 years old, so we've been dealing with this a long, long time. A few things they just picked up on their own. Others, we started with one tiny bite and a reward for eating it (a favorite food or a sucker...and lots of cheering and clapping)And it hasn't always been successful. We've had lots of vomiting and gagging along the way. You just figure how far you can push. Fruit seemed to be a good place to start for us...it's sweet and easy to like.

I am finally getting my daughter to eat some fruit. She prefers bread over anything. Have you ever seen someone skin a chicken nugget and just eat the breading? LOL!
