As we were eating eggs "over easy" this
weekend, I was telling my sister that one of
the things I had a hard time learning to cook
was a good fried egg when I first got married.
The Mister would actually be visibly irritated
if the yolk broke when I turned it, or worse yet...
if I fried it too long and the yolk was solid instead
of runny. Fortunately, I got better at the process,
since those things still bother him! tee-hee!
That got me thinking of little food obsessions that
we all have. I have a cousin that would cry if
the gravy started to run out of his mashed
potatoes when he was very young.
To this day, I still hate it if a hotdog bun splits
completely apart so it can't hold the dog and
fixins very well. ......I really hate it if my
icecream begins to drip out the bottom of
a waffle cone! Or...if I lay my hamburger down
on my plate in a puddle of watermelon juice
and the bun gets all soggy! ICK!
I hate it when I go to put ketchup on something and forget to shake it first...that liquid that comes out grosses me out!
ReplyDeleteI love eggs! My favourite egg is poached, but I have yet to master cooking one without having the yolk break and the whites floating around the pan. My mom is the expert.
ReplyDeleteActually, I'll eat eggs anyway at all, but I hate when you get a bit of shell. That ruins the whole thing.
Kat
I'm pretty easy to get along at meal time as long as your don't give me any olives.
ReplyDelete2 of my quirky children eat all of one thing on their plate before they move on to the next and so forth.
and another quirk child have never cleaned up his plate since he was about 15- even if he has only very small portions, he never eats it all.
about eggs, I had the same problem when I first starting cooking over easy eggs for my hubby - I would throw away the broken ones even - but when he saw me doing that, he said he would rather eat the broken ones than waste them.
hope you had a nice weekend away with your sis.
I wish I was more of a picky eater. I love food. Period.
ReplyDeleteIsabel shares all of your loathings as well! Kris has too many to mention and I do not have many at all. I have tried to make my children not have as many as Kris and have concluded that this is not at all possible.
ReplyDeleteMy sister in law cuts her hot dogs in half lengthwise so that she can fit all of the fixins in without splitting the bun.
ReplyDeleteI very much dislike it when I don't have the timing right in putting together a meal. I'm getting better at it, but there's usually at least one aspect that's cold while everything else is hot.
ReplyDeletebleh!
My eggs cannot be runny in the least... no caramel, please... and I'll take my drink with NO ice.
ReplyDeleteMy boys will only eat grits at dinner despite it being a traditional southern breakfast food.
No peanut butter-y desserts for the professor.
I'm with Jill on the liquid, I hate it when it comes out of the mustard. And I too don't like my hot dog bun to seperate/ha
ReplyDeleteHad a neighbor once who hated lacey eggs...when you fry one and that edge gets...well lacey, he's right...everytime I fry eggs I think of him and try not to have "Lacey Eggs"
Rhonda ~ my 18 year old always leaves a little on his plate! What's up with that!?
ReplyDeleteMG ~ I like my fried eggs runny but my scrambled eggs dry. And if I have ice in a drink, I must have a straw! I'll take your caramel and peanuty desserts, though! :)
ReplyDeleteYou are a food perfectionist.;)) I have no particular demands, as long as I get my food.;))
ReplyDeleteBUT, I do love fried eggs and I hate when the egg yolk breaks when frying.:))
I'm with you on all of those! And I never mastered the over-easy egg for my husband- he has to make it himself to get that perfect yolk! Just can't move away from my scrambly-eggs self to get the trick of the flip just right...
ReplyDeleteWere you asking me to write a novel here, Betsy?! he he
ReplyDeleteI'll just go with, "I hate a soggy hamburger bun, too." Whether it's from watermelon juice or anything else runny on the plate.
Kayren ~ ha-ha....I forgot that YOU would have a lot to say on the subject! Maybe you could do your own post...or one on Caboose. I'm sure he has his food quirks.
ReplyDeleteHere's something I just thought of: I really hate when my knife or fork get sticky with jam or maple syrup or anything like that! I have to get up and wash the utensil before I can eat. Oh, and I must have the proper sized cutlery for the course. My husband will use a dessert fork for dinner if he grabs it by mistake, or a huge spoon in a tiny bowl for ice-cream. I hate that!
ReplyDeleteKat
i'm with you on the icky, soggy bun!
