In The Autism World Lately

I thought I'd make a goat cheese and roasted tomato tart for
dinner tonight.  I had the last 6 garden tomatoes on the
counter and thought this would be a yummy way to use them.
For roasting tomatoes, I used this recipe.  After they had roasted
for 3 hours, I set the cookie sheet on the counter to cool.  When
I came back into the kitchen a little later, this is what I found...

I knew immediately what had happened.  Alex!
He is known for eating anything and everything in the house.
I have to hide food if I need it for a meal or recipe!
One morning when he was younger, he ate a WHOLE meatloaf that
was in the refrigerator before the rest of us woke up!

Grrr.
Yes, I yelled.  I ranted.  I may have even thrown a little tantrum.
It took about 30 minutes before I could laugh about it.
Oh, the life of living with autism!  Never a dull moment!  haha.
What finally made me laugh was Alex closing his eyes any time
he had to walk through the kitchen.  I'm not sure if he thought
this made him invisible or if he thought it made me invisible.

  3. Oh wow! Has he ever eaten too much of something and it made him sick? At least tomatoes are good for you and if it makes you feel any better....my 24 year old son who does not have Autism would absolutely do that if it was something he loved. :)

    1. He has eaten so much he's almost been sick but never actually was.
He just doesn't know when to stop and thinks he must finish the whole pot or pan or whatever. Geesh!

  9. Just one more chapter for your book. Sorry your dinner plans were ruined, but that was funny as heck. At least he got a week's worth of lycopene. Closing his eyes when he walks through the kitchen...hilarious! Sounds like he's making himself invisible. It reminds me of a time when Sawyer was about 4 yrs old. He tried to sneak food upstairs and was about to get caught. He said, "don't look at me". HaHa!!

  10. Oh my, I feel stuffed just thinking about it. Sounds like you need to put a motion sensor alarm near the pan when you leave the room. Ha! That just might help. Glad he doesn't get sick.

    1. Now there's a thought! We've said a few times that we wish we had a lock on the fridge like we have on the freezer!

  12. Hi Betsy - oh gosh ... I can understand your frustration ... especially having roasted them for 3 hours ... still he's eating well - perhaps too well ... tomatoes be good! What did you do instead?! Wonderful to read his way of making sure life is the same - so endearing to read ... I can see the cuddle!

    Cheers Hilary

  13. I can relate...Ben and Katy have locks on all their cabinets as Baylor is an eating machine. I had to laugh as well at Alex closing his eyes!! I could just picture it in my mind.

  15. Oh lol ... But indeed it is just a compliment to your cooking Betsy! Oh he knew you were not happy about it ... (Understandable though) ... and he tried to make 'it' to go away ... what did you served instead? I am sure it was as yummy!! And did Alex had a double dinner then? :-)

  18. Oh, Betsy this made me laugh so hard. I have a 13 year old that I have to almost hide food from right now too. He's hungry all. the. time. I think I might have to try Alex' strategy for when life is stressful.....just close your eyes until you get through it.....that, or eat a pan full of something. :)

    1. If I was going to eat a pan full of something it would be brownies....not tomatoes. haha.

Yes, it was a tantrum. A video of it would have been very amusing, I'm sure!

  20. Haha, Alex knew that it would be tasty. Hey, that is great that he likes to eat tomatoes. Does he enjoy other healthy foods? You'll have to make another attempt but this time keep a close eye on them!
