Surviving Star

It's been 9 months since we took Star into our home!
I thought it was time to take her to the vet and have a
checkup.  Even though she's put on a nice amount of weight,
I suspected a bad tooth and her eyes still get weepy.
She needed her back claws trimmed and wasn't about to let
us touch them!  So off we went today for a visit.
Well!  Let me just say that in all my 26 years of taking
pets to the vet have I EVER experienced anything like this trip!

This girl may be old, but she still has some fight in her!
She threw up and pooped on the way, while we were there, and on
the way home.  She screeched, hissed, bit and wrestled me and the
vet!  She ended up getting a pedicure, drops for her eyes, and had a
tooth extracted.  He said she was about 12-14 years old and was
interested in hearing her story of how she came to be with us.
After fattening her up for 9 months she now weighs 7 lbs, so
you can imagine how thin she once was!

We both arrived home covered in vomit, poo, blood, and fur.
I gave her a bath, washed out the carrier, stripped down myself
and everything went into the washer.  Whew!

On the bright side, I think she already feels better with
that tooth out and she doesn't seem to be holding any grudges.
haha...maybe she's just grateful I brought her back home.
I'm sure she thought she was being taken away for good.
She gave me a kiss on the forehead, so I think I'm forgiven.

  1. Love the ending , the kiss on the forehead. Poor baby...it's hard being old and not quite up to par. Hope that things get even better now. Sorry it was such an ordeal for both of you.

    1. She totally caught me off guard! Usually our pets are scared stiff and cooperate very meekly while at the vet. They may cry the whole way there but during their exam they are too scared to misbehave. It all turned out well, though. Whew!

    1. Thanks....she's such a tiny sweet thing at home. Fortunately she calmed down immediately...even while I was paying the bill. Somehow she didn't associate me with the whole thing...good thing!

  3. Oh no! What an ordeal! I am so happy that you are both safe back home and that kiss on the forehead? Awww so sweet! She forgave you!!
It reminded me when I went to see my husband's family for the first time ... we traveled by their car to the sea where they had a house. His mom brought two cats with us. One of them vomited, pooped, hissed and made a terrible fuzz during that hour long trip. Lol. Well ... Interesting first impressions ... :-)

  4. Aww, sweet Star, I'm sure she thought 'here we go ' again.
Glad it all washed away, and she didn't scratch or bite you.

    1. Fortunately for us she's been declawed in the front!
I got one little tooth puncture but it didn't bleed too much.
Yes, I'm sure she thought I was getting rid of her...poor thing.
She let out one little mournful cry on the way and I tried talking to
her but she knew something was up! She's taking a good long nap now,
      sweet girl!

After all that, she gave you a Kiss. That is so sweet.
Glad she is feeling better. Seven pounds! Lucy weighs three.

    1. But that's a healthy weight for Lucy, right?
Star needs to gain 3 more pounds! She'll look so much
      better then!

    1. Definitely...I'll never forget how horrible she looked the day I got her.
Poor girl has had it rough....Hopefully she thinks this home is wonderful. :)

  7. What a special ending to a "rough" beginning. She looks absolutely beautiful on the white fluff. Had you not shared your story who would have thought what yucky experience you had.

Love your Cat Tales. Hugs to you too.

I'm glad I took her..she can only improve more now!

  8. I'm so glad that everything turned out OK, apart from the poo and sick etc. I hope she continues to make good progress. I feel as if I know her. She is a cat in a million, after all what she must have been through before she met you. If she could talk, she would have quite a 'tail' to tell I bet!

    1. It would be interesting to know her complete history. Seems like it started out good and somehow she didn't stay in that good home and spent some horrible years. I was happy he thought she was about 12....hopefully she'll be around 6-8 more years...although I bet she always spent 8 of her 9 lives!

  9. You deserve a kiss on the forehead . . . you saved her life and gave her a home. No wonder she was so upset ~ perhaps she did think you were making her homeless again. And then when she got home she may have realised you were just helping her.
Glad the tooth is out. I'm surprised she is as old as that . . :)
Sorry you were covered in waste products . . . lol

I sure don't want to be repeating that chime!
And now that she knows the drill
I'm sure it will be even less of a thrill. lol...

    1. I thought she'd snub me for a while, but she didn't! I think she was just so
relieved to get to come back home. I've never been so thankful that she didn't have
      any front claws, though. lol.

  13. Everything is just for the moment for a cat. They move on as if nothing happened. I didn't realize she was an older cat. You did save her life have given her the best of her life, except for the vet visit.

    1. She always seemed older to me but I wasn't sure if it was the hard life or actual years. And yes, you're right...all seems to be forgotten. I bet she remembers that carrier next time she sees it, though. haha.

  14. Oh that sweet Star, who knew the beast would be unleashed! Like others I, too, am surprised that she is a teenager, she is a beauty.

  15. Poor wee Star... and poor you! She must have been so scared.
It's interesting because the way you speak of her following you from room to room and being so thin, you wouldn't think she had that kind of fight in her. I am glad she didn't have her front claws too... you would have been shredded!
She must be so happy to be safely back in her loving home. I am sending you both forehead kisses! xxxx

    1. I never dreamed she would have that strength or be that combative! It was amazing, terrifying and humorous all at the same time! lol... and it was amazing that she immediately went back to her sweet self as soon as the vet was done. I held her in one arm while I checked out and chatted with the receptionist and she was her calm, normal self. What a goofy girl. lol...

  18. Hi Betsy - fascinating back story .. I hadn't realised she was 'old' ... but I'm so glad she came back and is settling down again. Crumbs - it sounds a trip and a half, or perhaps two and a half ... and a story to tell the family and us ... let's hope now the tooth has gone she'll fatten up a little ... take care and recover from that Star visit! Cheers Hilary

  23. Sweet sweet Star, she was probably abused by some yahoo who thinks they know how to treat cats, by tormenting them..we had a sweet black cat named Sophie who I adored she pitched a fit everytimg I took her to the Vet, the women vets a feline clinic at that gave her so much attention and lovin, it was hard to bring her home..Maybe she is really thriving with your love and affection..Teeth that are dead and gone can cause a tremendous amount of pain to kitteh cats and they can't tell their owners what is up..I have been gone e-mailing since I fell a month ago on 2/12/16 in a restaurant trying to find another place for a early valentines thai meal, the people did not ever say they were sorry I fractured my left shoulder and hit myself all over a rug that was protruding, I landed badly..It has been a big ordeal but nothing like what have must have happened to sweet star, there has to be a special place in HELL for people who abuse kitteh cats! Happy Easter early, daylight savings time tonight out here, st. patricks day too..My Elli has been the best towards me and helps me do most everything and I found out who my dear friends are, they came over and did a lot of things for me and my tiny family, and my kitteh cats knew something was up, they laid near me day and night in my agony, aniimals esp. kitteh cats are the best kind of sweethearts when one fractures their shoulders! take good care of you and your hubs and beautiful children!

  24. I fractured my right shoulder and I am right handed so everything came to a big halt in my life for over a month now..The pain has been pretty intense, but my hubs Elli has treated me like a Queen and my good friends came by to help me out, I never asked a thing of anyone but they knew I was jammed up..Happy Happy Holidays soon, we have Passover and to tell the truth I have skipped everything for over a month now..I am slowly getting better but the pain is very intense at times, I look up and say thank you God for not letting me break my neck and other limbs, in every thing that happens to a person there is a blessing even if it is pain and suffering I truly believe it!
