Velvet

This lady refuses to be domesticated, although she does
come inside to eat ...and sleep in bad weather.
We first met a few years ago...feral pregnant mama...
leaping into the air to catch birds for food.
And she was amazing at it, too!
I took pity on her and fed her some chicken and she stayed
and even entrusted her kittens to me.
She's had two litters here, 9 kittens total, before
I could trap her and have her spayed.
Don't even think about petting her or you'll
get the evil eye!  She does on occasion pose for
the camera, though.  I think she's beautiful!
She's had a crush on Tiger for years now.
Can't say that I blame her. ha.

  1. She does look beautiful.
There is a song called Black Velvet which is quite apt. My daughter used to sing it . . :)
She looks very healthy and has a very glossy coat . . :)

    2. I can't wait to see that....probably a ways away, but I do think it will happen!

  2. She's lovely. But you can see from her eyes that she's ready to take off at any time can't you?
It looks as though she is graciously granting us an audience.

    1. She does know how to give the looks! haha. You would think she would trust me by now...
and I think deep down she does. She's always let me hold and care for her kittens...although
she would hiss when they were very small.

  3. I am amazed she hangs around that closely but she must be secure for shelter and for food. We have a black cat with white boots that welcomes me to feed her out at the garden shed but I have never seen her eat it. I just scared her from sleeping on a lawn chair while sending my little dog outside. I do think I remember your litters of kittens from her.

    1. She will come very close for food but if she thinks you're going to try to touch her, she backs away. I'm glad she chooses to stay....she's a quiet one, though....I've only heard her meow once!

  4. She knows she has it good
But still not going to conform to your hood
9 kittens would make any parent grumpy though
As they all run too and fro
    She's sure watching you
Always ready to take off at your zoo

    1. She certainly keeps her guard up,
      unlike a silly little pup.
But at least she sticks around...
she is the queen with the crown!

    1. Hi Pat...we were just commenting this morning that Star has put on a little more weight.
I suppose in a year we'll be commenting on how far she's come. :) Maybe we'll get her confused with
      Velvet. haha.

  6. She does indeed resemble luxurious velvet. Interesting that she feels comfy enough to be up on a counter but not to be touched. I bet she's so grateful that you cared for, and continue to care for, her babies.
I see Velvet's ear wasn't nicked when she was spayed?
Star's facial expression is a bit similar to Velvet's, it seems. Serious kitty.
    Hope you enjoyed your weekend!

    1. The only ears that were nicked were the first 4 cats I took for be fixed...Tiger, Socks, Whiskers and Mustache. Whiskers lost half of her ear and I swore I wouldn't let them do that again! So I've specifically said no to that from then on. Star was already done when we got her, of course. And yes....Star and Velvet...such serious faces! Hard lives, maybe? Poor dears...

  7. She probably has a sad history. If she only knew how lucky she is she'd maybe give you a cuddle or two.

    1. I believe she was always a feral and lived off what she could catch. Maybe humans had mistreated her, too. I don't press the cuddling...I'm just happy she calls this her home. She hangs out on the porch swing almost all the time...comes in to eat and get a drink and look for Tiger. haha. When it's cold, she'll sleep in a chair. I think she's grateful...but I can't erase her history.

  9. She is beautiful...her coat, and her eyes. I think we will see Star looking like that too. Just time.

    1. Yes, it will take time. Star almost looks like her body will need to replace her entire coat. Definitely
not glossy or soft. haha. Poor girl....she's just having a long makeover. :)

  10. She definitely has that "Don't mess with me" expression. Or maybe it's just the gaze of a very confident woman. Lynne in NC

  11. Hi Betsy - she's so stunning ... why are black cats so special ... but I love them all - just the black cat calls. Good for Velvet - keeping her independence. Cheers Hilary

We'd be overrun with wild cats! haha...

  13. Sweet. Funny she does not like to be petted ... well rather interesting. It is like if she hold something against humans ... cute she has got crash on Tiger ... She is a lovely cat. I was thinking about you yesterday. When I did let our puppy out in the morning he went straight to the table at the terase sniffing the chairs and looking rather alarmed. It turned out that two cats were sleeping on the chairs on warm cushions and under the sun protection which is nowadays rather a rain protection :-) so cute. They both looked well cared for though and most probably they just had a meeting at our place that night :-) happy week Betsy! Ps: will think of you and Alex on the 23d!

    1. Well, how fun to have a few feline visitors! They know a comfy napping spot when they see one, don't they? Our patio chairs are a favorite...soft cushions and just high enough to feel safe. Thanks for the good thought about Alex...I'll be sure and remind everyone on the big day. :)

  15. She's a gorgeous girl, and my Katie acts like that also...no one can mess with her but the hand that feeds her, and my husband, who is like the cat whisperer. The kids are scared of her, and my adult kids are too!
