Braving the Antarctic

I defrosted our big freezer yesterday...a job
that was long overdue!  It might have been 2 years
since I did it!  It was almost empty and I thought I'd
better get it done before the weather turns colder!
Then to celebrate, I went to Sam's Club today
and stocked up on meat. haha.

Don't you just love crossing those chores off your list?
Well, if you're OCD like me, you do. :)
And the before and after pictures aren't bad either!

  1. We had a non defrost freezer in our basement at our old house.
    I hated defrosting it ,
It was a total pain. Things got stuck in there and I couldn't get them out.
Love our new fridge with the frostless freezer. Just wish I had another freezer for stocking up on things.
    You did an excellent job.

    1. That's what this freezer is for...stocking things up. It's old...and every time I defrost it I wonder
if it will even turn back on! haha...thankfully it did!

  2. This makes me smile Betsy..I love it when this job is done. We defrost our upright freezer in winter when we can use the outdoors as a freezer! But I noticed that ours looked pretty frozen up already and I need to wait a few more months..yikes!

    1. My boys seem to know on the rare occasion when I don't lock it and will peek inside and leave the door ajar....
which makes that frost really grow rapidly! Sigh! I've promised myself that I will lock it every time to prevent
      that! haha....

  3. Looks so much better all clean
With no yucky ice at your scene
Don't need to be reminded of snow
    Soon enough that shall blow
Don't even use the freezer at my sea
So it is clean and ice free

    1. You could collect snowballs in the winter, you know.
And store them in your freezer below.
Any time you want to cool off,
pull one out in summer! Don't scoff!
      hahahahaha....

  4. Quite a difference between the before and after pictures, The ice was taking up a lot of volume. . .
I have a freezer in the utility room. It is not large so when I want to defrost it I pick up the whole thing and carry it outside onto the patio and prop it up in the sun and it defrosts in no time. Not sure whether I will be able to do it this way in 10 years but ok for now . . . lol

  5. Yes, and if it gets done and was not on the list.....I have to add it to the list, just to cross it off. HaHa!

  7. I remember having a refrigerator freezer years ago that had to be defrosted. Had to put hot water in a bowl, and it took all day. So happy refrigerators are now frost free. I've never had a big freezer. My parents had a big freezer in our garage and my dad would be half a beef every year.

    1. We bought 1/4 beef once....it is nice to have!
I have done the hot water in a bowl before but this time I just left the door open and let it drip.

  8. Brave woman! That takes me back to the 1970's when I had a bottom freezer that I had to sit on the floor in front of and chisel away the ice from inside every 6 months or so. Sure don't miss doing that. I bet you got some good arm exercise though.

    1. Hi Carol! :) I didn't chisel this time...just let the warm day do the work through a door I left cracked open a bit.
I've done all those tricks...hair drier, hot water, chisel....this time I just let it do it's thing. Took about 9 hours!

  9. I LOVE my new frost-free freezer! The electric company actually paid us $50 to take the old one off our hands. Guess they were tired of all the extra power it was using :-)

  10. So true. I clean out my fridge shelves every time I go food shopping. Amazing how sloppy we are. But the frost-ugh

    1. About a year ago, I got into the habit of wiping the fridge shelves and throwing out anything too old before going
to the grocery each week. It really makes a difference, doesn't it?

  11. Hi Betsy - it's good to do the jobs as and when you can - when the brain says enough is enough .. this needs to be done. Also much better to do it in the warmer weather ... now you're stocked up and ready for winter ... cheers Hilary

  13. Looks great!
I used to have an old fridge that required that kind of labour. Used to spritz it with hot water, use a hair dryer, a chisel, etc. to defrost it. Took ages. That's one chore I no longer have to do. Yay!

    1. We might have had one of those fridges in our first apartment....my memory is foggy now....those actually are worse because
you get into them more and create frost faster than the big units for overflow storage. I'm sure I waited until it was impossible
      before thawing it. haha.

  14. Your title intrigued me. And also left me wondering about the state of my freezer down i the basement. I'm still wondering because I haven't ventured down to look yet. I recall my mom placing pans of hot water in her freezer to help melt the frost build up. As a kid it was different and exciting. I'm sure it wasn't near so much fun for Mom.
