Nugget

August 2007 - August 2015

Our sweet Nugget left us this morning.
Sweet old bunny.
I emailed The Mister when I got home from the vet
and said he was in heaven... probably munching on the best
organic lettuces ever.  He sent a note back saying,
"Well, he lived a heavenly life with us, too."
And he's right, we spoiled him something awful. :)

We always thought of him as a rescue rabbit even though
we got him at a pet store.  He had been there since a baby
and nobody had bought him after 6 months.
He'd never been out of the little glass aquarium he was in
and we enjoyed rescuing him from that environment
to introducing him to free reign of the house,
organic lettuces, and lots of toys.

You'd think he would prefer a quiet corner but we could
usually find him in the back of the house with the boys.
He loved to stay in their room even though it was chaotic,
loud and crazy there.

He had a lot of personality and loved to jump out from
around a corner and startle you.
He would run through the house and kick up his back
legs like he just couldn't contain his excitement.
He slept under the dining room table with a cat or two
and was softer than a cat could ever be.

He seems to have had a stroke several days ago
and when his condition didn't improve, it was
time to let him go.  He was 80 years old in
human years.  A nice, long, full life.

We miss him already.

What I always noticed about Nugget, was those ears.

  13. I am shocked and sorry to hear the news. He seemed to be one of those pets who would go one forever, even though he was 80. It is indeed a sad day for you.

  15. It is always hard to let go of a family pet. They become true family members.

  16. Remember when it was only him at your place
Spoiled rotten is always a good embrace
Never easy when any furry family member's end comes due
But he sure had a great life with you

  24. Thanks, friends. :) I read each of your comments as they came in and cried all over again with each one.
After several days of worrying about him and then today, I'm exhausted!
And yes, I agree with those of you who said it's best not to let him suffer.
Thanks to those of you who knew he was sick and checked in today with messages and texts...much appreciated.
He's buried under the pine trees beside our first two cats Alex and Teddy and a parakeet or two. :)
We're left with lots of sweet memories. :)

  27. So sorry for the loss of Nugget..You take good care of your animal companions and I know in my heart he is in bunny heaven! I hate animal stores the animals look like they want to run free, you gave Nugget a long good and loving life for that you and yours have joy, love and happiness in your human life! RIP Nugget...Our only rescued this kitteh cat who nearly jumped thru a window at a vets office in Seattle as she walked by daily to take the bus to her job, we have Miss Cody now and she is a such a sweetheart she runs in the house and I gently take her outside for some heat (we have had the longest stretch of a drought in 100 years here in the pacific northwest) she loves it for a few minutes and back she hops to her donut and toys inside for some coolness. Animals enrich human lives..have a week filled with memories of your sweet Nugget and know you do make a difference in animal lives esp. your beautiful Star kitteh cat..hugs sent out and love too..X()X()X()X()

  28. Hi Betsy .. how very sad - and gosh his coat looks wonderful in your photo. 80 is a good human age - 'cept I hope mine is further away than that. But I'd love to have spent my years with you and the family ... enjoying organic lettuce, having cuddles with various little cats, and then the boys creating the environment I could enjoy living in ... lucky Nugget.

My thoughts as you all adjust to life without him. I think the Mister had it right .. he was definitely in Nugget Heaven with you .. and now he has a paradise to rest in ... take care - Hilary

  35. I somehow missed this post, and only found it after you mentioning Nugget in your post today. I'm so sorry for your sadness. Piper has been gone 3 weeks today, and I thought I was alright with it........but when I came home from grocery shopping Friday afternoon and she didn't greet me on the porch waiting for a kiss through the spindles, I broke out crying uncontrollably !

I know you have lots of 'babies', and I think that EACH of them is very blessed to have YOU !
