Regular and Decaf

Back in January when I was talking about how my teeth
are shifting due to my night time teeth grinding,
Laurie said she found that giving up caffeine helped
her stop that irritating involuntary habit.

Well, you all know how much I love my coffee!
I've drank a 12 cup pot all by myself since the triplets were born!
And yes, you would have, too, if you had 4 babies under 2 years old!
I mean, it could have been vodka, right?  haha.
I used to take a caffeine supplement on top of that but quit that a
couple of years ago.  I wasn't sure I could go cold turkey, so I decided
to cut the caffeine by half and see if that might help.
I've never have trouble sleeping...I sleep just fine!  I just grind my
teeth while I sleep and I don't want to ruin my teeth since I just
had them all beautifully straightened 2 years ago.
Even with permanent retainers, I've been making them move!
Stress is a powerful thing, let me tell you!

So, I bought 2 big bags of coffee beans at Sam's Club.
One regular and one decaf.  I mixed them up in equal amounts
and for the last week, I still have my pot of coffee but
with half the caffeine I used to.

The first two day I thought I was going to die.
haha...I was SO tired...like a zombie.
So, I added a green tea supplement in the afternoon
and seem to be adjusting pretty well!

I can't tell that it's helping my teeth yet.
But hopefully it is!
I still think it's stress, but this can't hurt, I suppose.
I had an orthodontist appointment today and the
retainer he has me wearing seems to be doing it's thing.
I'm not enjoying how tight he adjusted it, but
what price beauty, right?

  3. I clinch my teeth at night so tightly that I have cracks in some of them. So, I have to wear a bite splint or night guard, whatever you choose to call it. I find that I clinch more during times of stress. Ask your dentist about it. The appliance can save your teeth.

    1. yes, I do that, too! I've had an incredibly stressful few years...lots of extended family stuff. I clinch my jaw so hard that I make a nerve send signals down my jawline. ha...it's awful! I looked at those mouth guards at the store today. I can't wear one now with this retainer, but I'll see what he want's to do for the long haul after my teeth are straight. Cracks, huh....you better unstress, girl! :)

  4. Do you really notice a difference Betsy?
    I don't....but I only drink maybe 2 cups a day....if that....
So glad you mentioned Laurie....I kept looking for her, and thought she had disappeared again!
    So...your jaw is better?
    Cheers!

    1. Yes, I could tell. I was exhausted the first two days!
My jaw isn't better, no. No difference yet....but I'm going to give it some time.
Getting rid of stress would be the best cure! haha.

  6. I remember reading a long time ago that "they" say that when you are giving up/cutting down on caffeine you have to do it very slowly as it is a very powerful drug. For instance if your are giving up a one- or two-cup a day habit you only cut back by 1/4 cup a day for a couple weeks and then another 1/4 cup, etc. So yours might have been too abrupt a drop, but if you are still functioning - well I guess that works too! :-) I used to date a guy who drank a 10-cup pot in the morning and several more throughout the day. And he still does! I only ever have one cup or two at the most per day. Otherwise I can't sleep. Hope you find the magic bullet!

    1. I knew better than to stop it immediately....and I don't want to cut more than half anyway. I didn't get a headache, thankfully! And I like flying around getting a lot done on my caffeine high. haha. It makes one very productive. lol...

    2. Maybe I need to drink more...

  7. Because I love coffee so much too, Several times I've given it up during Lent (I'm not Catholic) but I love the Easter Season and observe Lent, and do special devotional from Ash Wednesday through Easter. All that to say....it was the hardest thing I've ever done. First few days, horrible headache, then a wonderful feeling of freedom. I haven't done it for several years. I practical hold my coffee as a "Holy Relic" HaHa.

    1. Going cold turkey would be too much for me I'm afraid. I need to function! I've never observed Lent but know some people that do. It's an interesting concept. One friend is giving up complaining...not a single negative word is to come from her mouth for 40 days. I kind of like that better than the traditional 'no sugar' or 'no chocolate' ones. You're brave to give up coffee...haha....you're braver than me!

    2. Do you observe Mardi Gras before Lent? I want to see a pic of Don in his beads. lol....

    3. I was wearing my Mardi Gras beads at Friday's concert!

  8. I only drink two cups of coffee a day (one in the morning and one in the afternoon). If I don't get my afternoon fix I wake up about 4 AM with a HORRIBLE headache that doesn't go away until after the breakfast caffeine kicks in.

  9. Good luck, Betsy. With the caffeine and the grinding. I've cut way back on my caffeine... finally got to where I didn't sleep well if I had it late in the day... but, I still have to wear a bite splint at night... Once a grinder, maybe always a grinder.... at least this old gal. blessings ~ tanna

  10. I have a morning cup of coffee, but no more caffeine through the day. It makes me wild! Good luck and I hope this new mixture helps!

  11. I got hooked on coffee while in the Army. Army coffee is hard to describe but it was always in the Mess Hall in a kind of round tub with a lid. It was strong and the hair I once had on my chest just vanished. I still love coffee but began getting Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) and that put me out of whack so for most of the day I drink Decaff coffee. Especially in the morning. Sometimes I can take a cup of real coffee in the afternoon. My daughter brought me a pound of coffee from Disney Land and it is very good stuff but expensive. My wife's uncle used to have a big thermos bottle filled with screaming hot water that he carried around and when he wanted a cup of coffee, he got a spoon out of his pocket and used a rounded spoonful of "instant" coffee in a cup, and that was his fix for an hour or two.

    1. Now, I would have thought that army coffee would have made chest hair grow! haha. I'm sure that coffee wasn't the best, but you men needed your caffeine, I'm sure.

Bet the Disney coffee was good! What a fun gift!

  12. We drink a lot of coffee here since DH retired. Our mix is 1/2 and 1/2 reg to decaf and that works ok for us. Not too tough to adjust to. Hope your teeth are going to be ok. They are really important. Taria

    1. Glad to know the mix of half and half is good for you. I think it will be fine for me. It still tastes good and a I enjoy it. I can tell I'm not as full of caffeine, but that's alright...I'm still functioning. haha. If it doesn't help my teeth grinding, I just may go back to my sparky self. lol...

  13. I don't drink a ton of coffee, usually just two a day. I keep thinking I should trade it for green tea again..., but so far that hasn't happened. Although, I did get caffeine free for a while last year. Maybe I'll start new in March and make the green tea switch. Let's see... I've got about a week.

  14. I only drink 2 cups of decaf a day and still grind my teeth. And yes. It's definitely stress that does it. And anxiety. I know what makes me so anxious. Can you do anything about your causes?

    1. I have a feeling I am going to be like you. Caffeine is nothing but a positive for me and I know it is stress...yes, and anxiety...that causes it. I am trying to eliminate what I can, but you can't get rid of it all, you know? ha. Well, unless I became a true hermit...which wouldn't be all that bad!

      Delete
    2. No hermitting. No we can't sort everything out can we? But I wish I could stop waking up at 4:42 every morning. So annoying! And BTW I must show you my new table lamp which I think you will love. You know all those antique glass cloches that you put things under and they look so smart? My lamp is basically a modern cloche in clear glass with a light fitting on top. And I've put a Meissen coffee pot under. I think it looks great. Must try and take a good photo and post it this weekend.

    3. I can't wait to see that table lamp! It sounds beautiful. And what a clever idea to put the meissen under it! I'm sure it's lovely!
