Found A Peanut

In my yard yesterday!

One Blue Jay would swoop to the ground, grab a peanut and
sit in the tree and eat it.  Another Blue Jay would swoop down,
grab a peanut and bury it in the snow a few yards away!
I've never seen a bird do that before....more like a squirrel
than a bird!

Slate didn't catch any birds, but he had fun trying!

I'm linking up with I'd Rather B Birdin.

  3. Last year the bluejays come every day to find the peanuts I'd toss in the driveway. This year,if Little red doesn't take hide first, a pair of big black crows take them instead.
You have a regular circus over there!

    1. I haven't seen any crows but I've heard them about the neighborhood! Sometimes they walk down the middle of the street looking for food! Not sure what they are expecting to find there!

    2. Why roadkill, of course!
Oh, goodness! What a bunch of typos I left in that comment up there. Hate that! (I should have been an English teacher the way I want to go back and edit it...)

    5. Well, I don't here but on my phone it's crazy...texting can take on a life of it's own if you don't proof read! And my iPad does it, too....crazy.

  4. Very clever how you put that together. I don't appreciate the ear worm but I do appreciate your creativity.

I can't say that I've seen a Jay bury anything in the snow but we watch the nuthatches bury their finds in the bark of the trees.

    1. I'll have to pay attention to the nuthatches more closely and see if they do that. I know they fly off to the neighbors tree with their seed but I haven't kept watching to see what they do next!

  6. Slate's eyes look positively demented or crossed in that photo. :-) Years ago in MA we used to put bread out on the snow for the birds, and the blue jays would all bury the pieces, rather than eat them. We always called the jays "Gerald McBoing Boings", because of the way they jump around. Lynne in NC

    1. He looks very intent, doesn't he? He was very entertaining out there...very dramatic. He isn't as much of a sleuth as Shadow, who frequently catches a bird. Slate almost announced his coming in a clumsy way. But he sure had fun and got lots of exercise. I thought of you this morning when he snuggled up on my lap while I sat in bed with my coffee. He just nuzzles in and looks at me like he thinks I'm the best thing ever....what a grateful, sweet kitty he is. :)

  7. Much as I adore Slate, I'm glad he didn't catch such a pretty bird as the Blue Jay.

    1. Me, too! I scold them when they catch a bird and they look at me like I'm crazy. haha. I've also been known to knock on the window to scare the birds off if they don't appear to see the approaching danger! :)

  8. Such a CUTE post! When I saw the last photo, I went "Yikes"....glad the cat didn't catch any of the birds! :-)

    1. The birds here are pretty used to the cats and keep a close eye out. But occasionally one will get caught...always makes me sad. The circle of life, I suppose. This time though, Slate was not sneaky enough to even get close to catching one!

  10. I was walking in the fields behind my house one day when I saw a Jay with an acorn burying it by pushing it into the ground. Then he fly away and a squirrel who must have been watching promptly went and dug it up and then buried it a few feet away! I wonder what the Jay thought when he came back for it. "S'funny. . . I could have SWORN it was just here!"

Absolutely spiffing pictures as usual, old gal!

Looks as though the peanut is not rotten . . . . lol
Very funny that Slate is singing, "Found a birdie, Found a Blue Jay, Found a birdie just now . . . . . "
    And the photos are superb . . . . . love the whole thing . . . . :)

  13. lol the birdies and the cats were well entertained indeed
And no one was made to bleed
    That is a good fate
Maybe not for the tummy of Slate

    1. Slate's tummy is big and round
and although he probably gave a frown,
a bird to eat he did not need
as in the house there is lots of feed.

      Delete
    2. But he can't gift the feed to you
Like he can a bird or two

    3. Those kind of gifts I can do without
they make me want to scream and shout.
Ew! I shoo them back outside
even though they are filled with pride.

  17. Now I can't get that song out of my head! Cute captions as always. But boy, does Slate look FOCUSED. Yikes. I would not want to be a birdie near him. Although his meow might be worse than his bite - ha ha.

  19. Morning Betsy....
Just about to pull out of Georgia....headed for the beach cottage!
    We always sang that so
NGO in the car, and drove our parents crazy!
But we sang...."found a peanut last night"..... I guess there are many variations....
Have a great Sunday....oh yes....we honked and waved as we drove by your exit!
    Cheers!

  22. I'm so glad he didn't kill any birds. I suggest you get him a feather toy on a string for him to chase. A well-fed cat is quite happy to chase without killing.

    1. haha...oh, if you knew my cats, you would know they are verrry well fed and happy. Some of them don't chase birds at all and a few do for fun but aren't good at it. Only a couple of mine are true hunters and good at it...but they are well fed just like the rest.

    1. No, most of the birds are used to the cats and very sly about where they land and eat. I have the feeders up very high, too, just to keep them safe.
