Mr. Wren

We have a male wren in our neighborhood.
He's desperately looking for a lady friend!
He's loud and persistent in his calls and can be heard
even inside our house with the windows closed!

For those of you who may not know, the male wren
will build 3-4 nests all on his own even before meeting
his lady!  Then he will call and call for as long as it takes!

Once she shows up, he changes his calling to a romantic,
soft song and takes her around to all the nests he has made.
She gets to choose which ever nest she likes!
After she chooses, she starts tearing it apart
and then the two of them rebuild it together!

What a man, huh, to put up with all of that!?
Just after reading all of these facts a few years ago,
I got to witness it right in my own yard.
That obnoxious call that had been going on for days
suddenly turned into the sweetest little cooing!
I couldn't believe it was the same bird!

I took the photo this week when Mr. Wren must have
been checking out my hanging basket for bugs.
They don't eat seed!
And as I type this, he is still out there
calling his little lungs out!  I hope for his sake that
a sweet little girl wren shows up soon!

I've linked up with Anni at I'd Rather B Birdin'.
You can see other bird photos HERE!

  5. Bet he wishes he was a goldfish!
The poor sod!! . . . . calling away like that and she keeps giving him the slip.
Singing his lungs out and building away
    . . . . no wonder he speaks in a low voice
He is shattered and then he has to rebuild the house yet again.
It's a wonder he has any energy left and the species has not died out!! ROFL

Can't he pretend to be a Jay or a Sparrow or something!!

      Delete
    3. haha....Oh, he'd have a hard time pretending to be a Jay! He's only as big as their head!
Maybe he isn't a poor sod...maybe she makes it all worth while. ha.

  9. Damn, that is too much work
    Building 3 or 4 isn't a perk
But I guess if you want to impress
You have to do more not less

    1. I hope she's nice to him after all that
and doesn't become a nag and an old bat.
      hahahaha...

    2. The fact he wants to woo a spouse
Will make him build a house. house. house
And then he shouts and calls for weeks
To find a lady, whom he seeks
His advances fall upon deaf ears
      Until she suddenly appears.
She says none of those will do
Come lets knock thm down us two
If you whisper low romances in my ear
You may have your way with me my dear
But after we erect our house
Are you a tiger or a mouse??
      LOL

      Delete
    3. I'm sure he's a tiger if she whispers like a kitten.
But if she nags, he might get bitten
and call himself a poor ol' sod
and pray he was single again, please, God!
      lol...

      Delete
    4. Oh! after all he's gone through
He will be dominant of the two.
And she her eyekashes will flutter
And sweet words to him she will utter

      ROFL . . . . . come on Patt where are you?

      Delete
    5. The cat has work to do
But he can rhyme for a few
The old bat can come and go
She can easily reap and sow
For if she is a grouch
Or declares he gets the couch
He has three other houses in which to live
So he can go there with no need to forgive
Then she'll do all the work
      Finding she misses her perk
Show a little of this and that
And poof he'll no longer scat
They get along for a while
Until the years turn the dial
She'll get plastic and he'll get bored
Then he'll drive off in a broken down ford
      Or pull the rip cord
      Praying to the lord
      That he take his life
To get away from that b**ch of a wife

      Delete
    6. Oh Lord
      The poor sod
      has pulled the cord!
      I'm glad I'm not a wren
I'd be free and alive again!!
      LOL

  12. Well, I never knew that. You learn something new every day. I don't think I have seen a wren in this part of the world for years now. I get a lot of house martins building their mud nests under the eaves of the outhouse.

Since Maggie the Magpie got eaten we have acquired a crow, and he is becoming a bit of a pest. He squawks very loudly as soon as the sun come up (4am) and doesn't stop until dusk!

    1. I agree...crows are pesky! And they sure look huge if you're used to watching little wrens and finches! Maybe the fox will get the crow, too? Just don't let him carry you off! ha.

  23. I believe he may be scouting your basket as a possible nest location. I've had them build nests in several potted plants in my courtyard and then had to be oh so careful when watering. Wrens are probably my favorite birds. One who slept on top of a front porch column every evening one fall actually gave me solace while my father was undergoing multiple cancer operations. They are the state bird of SC where I lived for 31 years. I was thrilled when one was featured on the state license plate some years back. Lynne in NC

    1. I wondered about that! It would have been a beautiful place for a nest, wouldn't it? I bet it would have been the first choice of Mrs. Wren, too! But it hangs so low in that tree I would have been worried about the cats getting into it. I love the story of the wren on your column...I really do believe God sends us little things of comfort like that. I actually believe that about my brood of cats....

Now, I would love to have a wren on a license plate! How very fun!

  25. I love wren's! They are the biggest, little characters! We have Carolina Wrens here. I didn't know that about the males building all those nests, but that explains the behavior I've seen around here! Check your hanging plants - Lynne in NC might be right. I've had wrens build in mine before. In fact they'll build in almost anything! I left a heavy raincoat out on the back patio once, for all off five minutes and one started building a nest in the hood! I guess he was short on building sights, ha! I'm so glad to have met you, Betsy! From poking around your blog it seems we have some things in common - my husband is Irish-Cherokee - I love coffee, God and positive {common sense} living! I'm happy to follow you :)
