Lamp Love

I've been wanting an antique lamp for my kitchen desk
for quite a while now but they always seem to go
out of my price range at the auctions.
Yesterday I spied this pretty lamp.
She was an oil lamp originally, but had been converted to electricity.
I love the shape, colors and lovely hand painted flowers.

She was filthy, so she had a bath in the kitchen sink.

I think the only thing I want to do is get a glass chimney for her.
It's not necessary, but I think a couple inches
of one sticking out the top would complete the look.

Mr. Cardinal looked in an seemed to approve. ha.

Isn't she lovely?

And look at this one.  I like mine better!
And that one needs to be repaired.
Oh, and the price was waaaay better, too. ha.

  1. Lamp is gorgeous! I always love stuff like that! We have some "old" kerosene lamps that we've taken care of. I think they were from my grandparents house somewhere along the way. Nothing as pretty as this one though. And I can't believe I'm FIRST again... It's been a while.

    1. We've had lots of the typical oil lamps at the auctions lately. The ones with the glass base and the chimney..not converted. They run between $80 and $130, depending on details, etc. Hang onto yours! But knowing you, you sentimental guy, I don't need to tell you that! ha.

    2. So true, my dear, so true! I kicked myself all the time for things I've had along the way that are now gone forever. Sure wish I had a whole lot of my grandparents things, but alas, most of those are gone as well. YEP... just an old sentimental guy!!

    3. Old stuff is just better, isn't it? I think that every birthday, too. ha.

  2. Lovely. Does yours have a bulb in the bottom, as well? I inherited one almost exactly like yours, and have moved it from our bedside to the "old-fashioned" guest room, so keep forgetting to put a bulb in there. If I can remember how.

And a chimney would be the crowning touch.

    1. No, it doesn't have a bulb in the bottom. It's still the old kerosene tank. It would be nice if both of them lit, but it's not to be. Yes, I think I need a chimney to finish it off. I bet yours looks great in a guest room!

  3. Like the new header

I think you have a 'spiffing' bargain!! Looks really great and very classy as I would expect from the lassy with the classy chasis lol
I like your's better than the Victorian lamp with the huge price tag. You'd have to be a bloated plutocrat to buy that!!!
Isn't there a risk that Slate or Grey will knock it over? . . . . . we don't use the word 'spiffing' much these days LOL

    1. That's Mr. Wren in the header. Tiny, fast moving and LOUD! haha.

I love the word spiffing! So English. And it's fun to say, too!
I think my lamp is much prettier than the ebay one!
I don't think the cats will knock it over. They've never knocked a lamp before, and this one is fairly heavy on the bottom so it
won't tip easily. The other 13 might, but not Slate or Grey. Kidding! lol....

    2. Well, you can always say "wizard!" if you think "spiffing" is outdated.

    3. That one is funny, too. Well, at least to me. But you do have me saying it! I'm sure my accent is altogether horrid, though.

    4. Something else old Brits might have said is "Frightfully grand!" but we are not quite as toffee nosed as that these days!! . . . but very cute of course! lol

Yes I really think we should call you 'Betsy Florence Nightingale', the lady of the lamp!
And yes no woder that poor wren seems clapped out. His Mrs keeps him up to at least 3am making three houses and she doesn't like any of them, orders him to knock it down and then to build another one!! If I could see a little bubble speech he would be saying, "Women!" lol

  4. Oh I love it..I think the chimney will really add to the beauty. We had one similar that I gave to a daughter, that had a nightlight bulb in the bottom. It's so delicate with the soft painted flowers. I like it a lot better than the one on ebay.

    1. Guess what...speaking of lamps. Going through the garage I found another lamp of Don's mom's that I will clean up and take. Forgot it was in the garage. It's a table lamp with shade, but hand painted with handles. It needs a new shade, but plan to put it in our bedroom when we move.

    2. I grew up with a double globe lamp like you're describing with a night light in the bottom. They are pretty and would be considered vintage now! ha. This converted one is from the 1800's, though. I just need that chimney now!

How fun you found that lamp in your garage!

  5. As Eddie said, you will have to be careful of the cats with a lamp like that. I had a beautiful one many years ago and put it on the coffee table to show it off and Sooty, my old cat, jumped up and knocked it over, smashing it into tiny bits!

I must admit I've never see one here quite like that, it's lovely. Shame it's been converted, it would have been useful in it's original condition in case you have a power outage any time.

I have my eye on a really nice oil lamp (original, not converted) in an antique shop at the moment. The price tag is £150 ($251). It's been there for over a year so I offered £50 ($84) for it. The owner is currently thinking about my offer.

    1. If one of my cats breaks it, I'm sending it to you! (the cat, not the lamp!) ha. If you could see how heavy the base is, I think that would put you to ease. It will not knock over easily. But it is lovely, isn't it? And since it's electric, I can use it every day without fear of flames.

Good luck on the lamp! It sound right spiffing to me! If he turned down your offer, that just would not be cricket!

    7. Glad to see the conversation continues without me. ha. I always thought your rugby was like our soccer instead of our football.

    8. No our National game is Soccer which we call football. But we have another very rough game called rugby, a game were players pick up the ball and run like hell and tackle each other and get all messy and muddy! I used to play it!! Loved it. But we can'y understand you American Football game at all - don't understand the rules!! I think you said you were a lovely cheer leader!

      Delete
    9. Well, don't feel bad. I don't understand our football, either! haha. I cheered for soccer and basketball. Eons ago. ;)
I can see you playing rugby!

    11. And you know I must ask...were you a gentleman or a thug? lol....

      Delete
    12. A gentleman of course!! How would you doubt that! . . . but I played a thug's game, rugby! lol

Yes, Kathy! During the auction before we got to that piece, I kept eyeing it and thinking, "Oh, that is SO me! I must have it!"

I had one that looked similar, you could turn the top on for full light, or the bottom for a night light, or both if you needed.
Yes, do get a glass chimney, it will complete her beauty.
