Limoges Fish Platter

At the auction this week I bid on and won this Limoges
antique hand painted fish platter.
Normally, they come with serving plates, but this was
by itself. It also wasn't in perfect condition.
I admired it before the auction began and still thought
it would go for a few hundred dollars.

I happened to be clerking at the time it came up for bid, and when
the bids started to slow at $25, jumped in and bid, too!

I thought it was just too cool to pass up for $30!
I looked on ebay and if they are in mint condition with the plates,
they are going to $1500 to $1800.  One set had a price of $4000 on it!

I guess most people didn't want it with the damage, but that doesn't  bother me.

I wonder if that's why the Shabby Chic Style was invented...so all the antiques that show
wear and tear could still have a home.  ha.
If nothing else, he can watch over my shell collection!

    1. well, with the damage on mine, I don't really know what it's worth...certainly not like the mint condition ones. Still fun, though!

  5. How cool, Betsy. Obviously you are meant to have it. Really superb and boy you didn't waste any time nailing it to the dresser. Quite expert with the nail hammer as well as the auctioneer hammer eh!
It must be worth considerably more than $30. What a bargain with just superficial damage.

    1. Yep, I got it up in no time. Actually, I banged the poor platter with the hammer by accident! Ack! I cringed and looked for a chip, but I didn't do any damage. Whew! I thought I'd broken the whole thing in two before I even got the thing on the wall! haha.

    2. Gosh Betsy you were VERY brave doing it like that. I would have been much more of s chicken. I would have marked where the nails were to go, bash them in and then hung it. Glad you got away with it and the platter literally did not go under the hammer. lol

    3. Oh, no...I marked the spots and put the nails in before hanging it. I just picked the hammer up off the sideboard and hit the platter laying there as I did it.

    2. Good idea! Now I'm going to go to Pinterest and look for one. I have a board called "Critter Ware". A fish platter would fit nicely in that category.

    3. Critter Ware? I want to see! Do a post on it soon! Look on ebay, too....

  11. Wow, you could make a ton
Getting cheap auction stuff under your sun
Then sell it for a ton on eBay
Even if not complete or with a crack on display
    Could still get some pay
Your bass doesn't sing on display

      My etsy shop rocks!
      Some on ebay, too.
But most in my etsy shop, it's true.
      Most stuff there
      came from the auction lair!

  14. You did good! A little damage doesn't bother me, I think just about every piece of furniture and appliance in our home has scratches, dings, dents.....and don't even look too close at my husband-he is for sure weathered, worn, repaired, and a little shabby chic too.
