I have a huge violet patch under one of my crab apple trees.
I look forward to it blooming every spring and this week
the little lovely flowers came out!
Violet is another one of those homonyms...words that
sound the same and are spelled the same but have
different meanings. In this case, one is the flower
and one is a color!
Violets are not only pretty, they are edible and are used
in salads, to make tea and even perfume!
And do you know what their meaning is?
The violet is a pledge of faithfulness.
In his sonnets, Shakespeare used the violet as a
symbol of humility and constancy in love.
As if shy, these rich dark flowers withdraw their color
to the shadowy glade. "How they would loose their beauty,"
wrote Keats, "were they to throng into the highway crying
out, Admire me, I am a violet!"
I guess that's what sunflowers do. lol....
And if you dream about violets, it might indicate
that you are shy, hiding in the background!

DeleteThree days in a row lol
It's hard to be quick
Deletewhen you're buried to your neck!
Only I was busy with the kids dinner:)
DeleteAnd honestly I had errands all day!
Excuses excuses from you
DeleteMore dirt will come due lol
Ppffffttt!!to you Pat!
DeleteWell I can't say
ReplyDeleteI have ever dreamed about a flower o any kind at my bay
Some are out there
But no flower at my lair
Maybe Cassie eats those dreams
If they come down my brain streams
And Violet is a name too
That makes three it can do
All that from a flower
Boy, it sure has the power
I forgot it was a name, too!
DeleteAre you thinking of Violet Parr?
You know she stretches far!
hahahahah!
Yeah that rip off can stretch
DeleteEasily win a game of fetch
We have violets that should be coming soon. They're such a pretty little flower. I didn't know about the meaning though.
ReplyDeleteI really should pick a little bouquet! But it's FREEZING out today. Just freezing. 40 degrees and blowing rain. No bouquet picking for me. ha.
DeleteThat is one dense patch of violets! We have some scattered in the back yard. mainly under the shade of a redbud tree. However, I noticed the other day they're getting bolder and expanding their territory.
ReplyDeleteI started it years ago from a shovel full! They do like to spread...but this is a grass-less spot with mulch, so they spread very fast, I think. Violets under a redbud...that is just the perfect picture of spring!
DeleteI think Pat made the third time a charm. And with Violets too. It would make a good cats name also. I am not sure how violets would grow out here in the heat, I will have to check. I think they use violets in potpourri's too. I know they put them in satchel's for one's dresser drawers. You have such a pretty spring garden, no wonder you have a zoo.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
I'm afraid they like the cold, shady spots....and when the warmth of summer comes (which is probably like your winter..haha) they are done blooming. Yes, I forgot about potpourris and sachets...good thought! I've seen sugared violets, too, on cupcakes...so pretty!
DeleteI love the idea of a cat named Violet! Hopefully I won't have another to name, though! hahaha!
Violets and roses are my favorites so far and love how violets smell are lovely; beautiful post Betsy!
ReplyDeletepale pink roses and violets would make a gorgeous bouquet, would they?
DeleteAbsolutely and smell awesome!
DeleteAre you thinking in some wedding??lol
haha...no...but that would be pretty for a wedding!
Deletebeautiful violets. I had an Aunt Violet and she wore purple and smelled of violets all the time, it was here scent, I really love violets, ours will be sometime yet, we still have snow under our crab apple trees, lol
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like she completely embraced her name. I love that!
DeleteI also meant to say how much I like your new header photo!
ReplyDeleteI took those photos today...grey, rainy and cold. Brrr. No snow, though. ha.
DeletePerfect..."V" is for Violet...of course it is!!!
ReplyDeleteI have quite a few little patches around my yard as well..
My Mom called them "Jolly-jump-ups"...Love that name...but...
It would not do for a "V" post...not at all!!!
Cheers!
Linda :o)
haha...well, Johnny Jump Ups are one of my favorite, if it's the same flower as yours...the tiny pansy faces? They are all in the viola family, I think...they are so sweet! I should have done that for J! haha.
DeleteThey are lovely...such a beautiful color. This must be where the term shrinking violet comes from when referring to someone is shy.
ReplyDeleteoh, you are so smart! I'm sure you're right! Good call!
Deletei knew they were used in tea, but never had them on salad...hmmm...might have to try that...add a little color...they are lovely...smiles.
ReplyDeleteI read that they are high in vitamin C and antioxidants. I've had them in a salad...couldn't even taste them!
DeleteLovely indeed! I have them here as well but they want to grow in my veggie garden.:( I like them better in the woods ;).
ReplyDeleteCan't say I ever dreamed of violets. Haha, wonder why?
Anything like that in my veggie garden gets fed to Nugget. He's already been enjoying the dandelions there. haha.
DeleteViolets are one of my favorite flowers... wild and African varieties. blessings ~ tanna
ReplyDeleteI wasn't even thinking African violets here...but they are in that family! Yes, I love those!
DeleteYou are a wealth of information!
ReplyDeleteDidn't know violets were edible.
you'll have to throw some in a salad...just to make it pretty!
DeleteI loved learning all of this. I have such memories of making violet and lily of the valley bouquets for my mom when I was a little girl. I still can't get over how much more spring you have than we do. They say every 15 miles equal one day in terms of climate and season change. Soooo, spring should be here very soon. I can only hope "they"are right!
ReplyDeleteviolets and lily of the valley...what a gorgeous combination! 15 miles for each day...I've never heard that! And how many miles are you from Cedarville, Ohio? :) I hope you're seeing violets very quickly. Linda in Canada is...so I'm wondering where yours are! haha...but she may be further south than you, now that I think about it.
DeleteI love violets so much, the flower and the colour.
ReplyDeleteme, too! :)
DeleteVery colorful! And... they're edible? Who'da thunk it?
ReplyDeleteNice new header, btw.
Hi, Betsy. Been a long time since I've been around. Had a short falling out with a friend that left a sour for blogging. But I've thought of you from time to time. Thank you for the note you left on the blog. Also, there's been some brute force attack on WP blogs admin sections and that shut down the blog a while as well. I just recently put a password gate on it so I could in. I figured that much at least. They have some other remedies I have to look into though.

...hence the shrinking violets. And they are lovely. We had a boat load of new tulips this year but they will vanish all too quickly.
