A Is For Autism

Well, here we are in April already!
And that means the annual A to Z Challenge!
Over 1700 bloggers come together and post
about one letter of the alphabet for each day during
the month of April.  So April 1st is for A, the 2nd for B,
and so on, with Sundays not included.
If you want to join in or see others who are
participating, click HERE.

It would be just about impossible for me not to think of
A being for anything but autism!

April is Autism Awareness Month!

  And for those visiting
from the challenge who may not know me, I have 19
year old triplet boys with autism.

 Challenging?  Yes.  Life changing?  Yes.
But I wouldn't want them to belong to anyone but me. :)

They are non-verbal and considered low functioning.
Two of them are whizzes on the computer
and one loves to help in the kitchen and tidy up the house.
They don't sense danger and have a lot of quirks
but they are funny, affectionate and sweet.

Spencer, Alex and Harry

We've been instructed to keep our A2Z posts brief, so I will.
But if you want to read more in depth about my thoughts on autism
and how our family has coped or even my thoughts on how
you can encourage a family dealing with autism,
click HERE for a guest post I did for another blogger.  Here's
just a little of what I wrote there...

Autism has taught me a lot.
It's shown me how strong and resilient I can be.
How the sun comes up even after the most horrible of days.
And it's increased my faith in God and broadened it in directions
that I never thought possible. Do I have all of my 'why' questions answered?
No. But I'm a better person because of what I
have gone through and continue to live with.
I find myself content when others are complaining about
the pettiest of problems. I don't sweat the little things.
I feel I have a broader perspective of life and remember
to see the big picture. And I feel I truly find beauty and happiness
in the smallest of life's gifts.

    1. I could not agree more, Betsy you are awesome.

I never noticed before but does Spencer look the most like Taylor.
In these pictures, I think he does.

    2. I think it's how thin Spencer has gotten that makes him look the most like Taylor! But I see their dad in the triplets and me in Taylor more than anything.

  16. Absolutely beautiful post Betsy. Autism can be heart breaking and confusing at times but your boys are your boys and you wouldn't change them for the world. I absolutely love this and you're a fantastic mum for all three of them. I couldn't imagine how stressful having three autistic children could have been but you seem to manage amazingly, great start to the challenge.

  18. I wish there had been a better understanding of autism when my brother was small. I think my parents really struggled and felt very much alone when Tim was a child. In spite of all that, there were still gifts and blessing, and lessons we might never have learned with out him. He is a gift too.

  33. Betsy!
I'm in my 26th year of teaching Deaf/Hard of Hearing and I have had an autistic student that is D/HH for the last 10 of those years. I have seen wonderful changes as a parent of three wonderful boys - you have also experienced. Having both eligibilities has been challenging in finding the path of communication. And the education of the educator is like finding the glass slipper - no one shoe fits every child - and you constantly read and learn in order to make a difference in the life of that child and his/her parents. God bless you and your Sons!!

  34. Hi Betsy,

Sorry I have been sick for the past few weeks with a really bad sore throat, ear and sinus infection. Back to that sleeping constantly thing. I think it is getting harder for me to constantly fight being sick and my allergies at the same time. Spent Easter sleeping the whole day when I thought I would have some energy to color eggs and help with Easter but just could not do it. I want to be asleep right now but trying to stay awake.

Anyway, just wanted you to know that after I read this I just wished I could give you a big hug so that you know you are such a great mom and even though we cannot be there with you that we are with you in spirit. And the boys are blessed to have you and the Mister. Your attitude is one we all need for living our lives as best as we can. So here is a big hug for you. ((((()))))))

    God bless.

  35. Dear Betsy,
you are an inspiration and an example in many ways! Personally I love your blog with its mixture of deep thoughts, often humorous and witty language, beautiful photos, and playful passages on shoes and jewelry, housework and delicious food. It´s the mixture of real life. And, as everybody can see, you are able to live the full circle of this all, even though you have a three times BIG challenge in you life with your boys. But we can see that you indeed stayed or became a very resilient person, who manages to be a devoted mother, keep a real family life, where many would have failed, I guess, and sadly would have split up ( of course a credit goes to The Mister, too, even though he never reads your blog). Inmidst a life, which must be complicated in many aspects, you succeed in loving it and finding pleasure in many small things.
And, not to be forgotten, you stayed a real beautiful woman, none of the pains and hardships you most certainly must have endured, shows in your sweet face. For me this shows, that you really found a balance for your life.
There definitely comes hope from the image of your life, that one can cope with tough situations and still find joy and pleasure...
On the newest pictures the three boys look relaxed and happy. On most pictures they do. Which is remarkable, as one should not forget, that their´s must be a rather complicated life, too. Having to live in a world, which might not quite be in proportion with their inner beings and demands.
Betsy, I have read your guest post on autism with great compassion. I wish, I could do something for you, but alas, an ocean is between us.
Maybe I dare tell you a little thing from my experience, which helped me get through the challenges of my own life: I increasingly gave up the WHY questions. As I found, they are among the most torturing and as you described in your post, in many cases, you never get near a real answer or proof and the whys can therefore keep on plagueing you.
I feel better, not to connect even the question of God with the eternal WHY? So many cruel and unbelievably dreadful things happen in our world. From an early time of my life on I could not find a vision of God, which would present me with 'reasons', why he could be tolerating these things. For me 2. Mose 20 (not to make pictures of God) very much means, that we human beings should not try to imagine what and how exactly God is. With our restricted insight we are always in danger to end up imagining him as ( a much better, mightier) kind of human being...
My husband is a descendant of Martin Luther and has a PhD in Theology and his and my vision of God has become more abstract over the years. At least it gives me peace, that I do not have to figure out why God could have sent me hardships...
But this feels different in every heart, I think. I beg your pardon, if I´ve travelled too far...
    My best wishes to you!
    Christel

    1. You wish you could do something for me? Well, sweet Christel, you comment here is a gift in itself! Thank you so much for taking the time to tell me these things. What an encouragement you are. I do agree that we should all find happiness in the little things and not be swallowed up in self pity or let the tragedies of life dictate our joy. And the why questions really are futile, aren't they? No sense in trying to figure out God with out finite minds. :) Thanks so much for your words here! xo
