20 Healthiest Foods

I found this list on Pinterest last week.
It was originally part of an article published in Men's Health
Magazine.  I was happy to see that we eat most of these
regularly!  That is, except edamame.  I've never eaten them!
They have as much protein as meat but zero fat.
We might have to try them soon!

  1. turkey breast
  2. sweet potatoes
  3. eggs
  4. green tea
  5. olive oil
  6. milk
  7. water
  8. edamame
  9. quinoa
  10. black beans
  11. beef
  12. whole wheat bread
  13. almonds
  14. yogurt
  15. spinach
  16. broccoli
  17. tomatoes
  18. oatmeal
  19. blueberries
  20. salmon
Tonight we had sweet potatoes and broccoli with salmon
and blueberries with yogurt.
Maybe that will even out the pizza scheduled for tomorrow. ha.

Do you eat edamame?  If you do, what is your favorite
way to prepare them?

  1. We eat a lot from the list, but not edamame or salmon. I've heard good things about edamame too.

    1. Not a salmon fan? It's one of my favorites...I like it grilled with olive oil, garlic and dill.

  2. i think it is all the other stuff i eat that gets me...haha...we actually eat a lot of that...and late in life i have developed an affinity for sweet potatoes...

    1. Yeah, like I said...pizza, chocolate, icecream...haha. At least we balance it out.

  3. I don't know what to do with edamame either...

    1. I'll have to research that. Maybe you just add them to a salad.

  4. We had the edamame, and it was hard and awful in pods! If you find a great way to eat it, and you will, let me know! We have been fixing quinoa for a meatless night, making a type of salsa with it. It is supposed to have more protein than any grain.

    1. Oh that's weird. yuck. I have seen bags of it frozen at Sams Club with other frozen veggies (like corn and green beans) I thought I'd just steam or microwave them like I would anything else. I'll let you know.

Quinoa is good for you...all the amino acids, which is unusual for any food.

  5. I don't even know what edamame is. I've never even heard of it. (It sounds scary...)

I listened to a woman talk about what foods cause "belly fat", you know, that list of 5 foods that are always advertized but never available? Let's see if I can remember... 1. concentrated orange juice 2. soy products (I think) 3. Whole wheat bread (pastas, etc...) 4. GMO corn and corn products 5. hmmm.... maybe suagr (I can't remember now. I wonder where that list I wrote went to?)

    1. Oh, doesn't that figure? Immature soybeans?

      Delete
    2. I've seen that list! I think it was.... never eat artificial sweeteners, soy protein isolate (genetically modified soy), margarine, 'diet' foods (or ones that claim to be low fat), and frozen dinners. Real sugar and real butter are fine...it's all the artificial stuff that's bad.

      Delete
    3. and you know...I've always thought that before seeing any list. REal butter and real sugar have got to be better than anything with artificial ingredients in them. Of course moderation is the key there on both of them. haha.

      Delete
    4. Ah, yes! I think it was margarine. You're right. Frozen dinners wasn't on the list I had. I know it was Orange juice, Whole wheat bread, margarine, and GMO corn... They were all things that are supposedly okay, but actually add inches very easily, or at least make them difficult to take off.

      Delete
    5. I can see the juice being on there...lots of calories...and bread would be considered bad carbs. There's a list for everything! haha.

      Delete
    6. I was told that margarine is one chemical away from plastic! Uck!

  6. Ummm that list is dumb
Is what I have to give a hum
    Milk beating water they say?
    Pfft to such a display
Milk is a load of crap
And whole wheat bread with the gluten on tap
    Pfft once more
Whoever made that list up isn't very bright at their shore
Plus lists like this are dumb
As they try and say they all work with their hum
But each person is different at their sea
And what is good for one isn't good for another at ones tree
    Never heard of edamame though
Can you tell I've researched the hell out of this food crap at my show? hahahaha
    I despise potatoes too
But that is just me at my zoo haha

    1. Geesh, chill out, Cat. Not milk over water! Both are on the list (not in any order). Yes, each person is different. Some are REALLY different (cough, cough) They are just saying they have a lot of nutritional value. You're just mad that turkey breast made the cut and your precious chicken and apple juice did not. hahaha.

      Delete
    2. haha no apple juice at my sea
      Just water for me
And pfft to anything with gluten in it
Even if I could knowing what I know now wouldn't eat that err ummmm spit
And in no order I suppose
But still milk, blah as what goes in that would make me rather chew on a garden hose

    3. My Spencer is gluten free
so he would agree with you completely!
And only water does he drink.
Nothing else from the kitchen sink!
      You sound cranky tonight.
Since I endured that post of yours, you should be polite.
      hahaha.

    4. haha not cranky at all
See agreed with by one at your hall
      Just irked by food
And many a list made up by some random dude haha

  7. You can buy edamame both in the pod and shelled. I'd recommend the shelled, which is a lot less work. They ARE good in salad, but I've also eaten them for a snack microwaved with a sprinkle of kosher salt. I've heard of people making something like hummus with them, too.

    1. ok...thanks for the tips! So, can you compare them to something? Lima beans?

      Delete
    2. Lima beans are probably not too far off, but edamame are much smaller and sweeter.

  8. Great list, Betsy! (Although, it was pizza for me tonight! Ha!)

  10. Your post on healthy food caught my attention... we are always trying to eat healthy. I must say it is much easier when the kids aren't here. After we finished all the Christmas cookies, we went back to healthy eating. haha
Josh first introduced us to edamame a few years ago. I think they are very similar to lima beans. He even convinced us to grow them in our garden, which was very easy. I have used them fresh in salads; roasted in the oven and eat as a snack food; or cooked like lima beans. Lauren likes them best with LOTS of brown butter. lol
I will have to find several of my recipes and send them to you. I am sure Pinterest has lots of good recipes for edamame too. Let me know if you try them!

    1. Well, that's very good to know! I always thought they looked a little like lima beans. They sound very versatile. Can't imagine munching on lima beans for a snack though. lol... But the article I read raved about how healthy they are! They would be a great way to add more protein to a soup, too!

love brown butter... would love any recipe you sent! Thanks!

  11. I'm very pleased that we eat everything on the list but the edaname. I don't know what it is either, and after reading your comments..don't care too. I LOVE salmon, but my dearest prefers white fish so we eat a lot of Talipia from Costco. When we go out.... I order salmon, and from time to time I buy it for myself. Tonight we had my "crock pot califlower" green salad with lots of veggies, and Talipia. I fix mine like you do your salmon. I use only real butter and cream. Two of my favorite things...la la la.

    1. I think there are a lot of us unfamiliar with edamame!

We had talapia, too. I bought frozen filets at Sams Club that were parmesan encrusted. Just baked them in the oven and they were crisp and really yummy!

so the cauliflower turned out alright? good thing...that was a funny story!

  12. I lurve edaname! I like them steamed and sprinkled with salt! Yummy! I had them that way the very first time I went to the Cheesecake Factory as a appetizer and have been hooked on them ever since.

  13. I have my overnite oats, with yogurt and berries every morning...yummy..
I think we eat all those things...except for the edamame...actually I had never heard of it before...
I will look for it...as you said, it would be good to add to soups...but as a snack???? not sure...
We are colder like you today...perhaps some sum tomorrow..:o)

    Cheers!

  14. Hi Betsy .. thankfully Marks and Spencer produce edamame salads - they're delicious usually with a chilli-garlic sauce .. not too strong but tasty .. but I love the way they look and taste ... and I know I'm having a good meal .... cheers Hilary

  17. We have edamame occasionally. My son loves them, much more than me actually, and sometimes asks Mom to get some if it has been awhile since we last had them. We usually just have them plain - stores around here sell them ready to eat so all you have to do is microwave them to heat them up. As Kathy G said, you can buy them shelled, however we usually get them in the shell as, for my son, eating them out of the shell is half the fun. (Though you probably would prefer the shelled version to put in salads). With Kai, we often have to limit his portion as he won't eat his main course if he can just have edamame. I don't really understand that as it has a rather bland taste to me.

    1. well, I guess since they are protein, he could eat them as a main dish...that's why dieters love them. I'll have to see they sell any ready made dishes in our deli. That would be a nice way to try them without a lot of preparation.

  18. I love edamame, steamed, buttered and covered with salt. Wait, I think the healthy part just went out the window. Darn.

    1. well, that seems like a nice, easy way to fix them! That's how I make most of our veggies.

  20. Yes. I eat edamame in veggie stir frys. Yummy! Or dry roasted *at Fresh Market* or like Anita's, buttered, steamed and covered with salt.

    Sweet Potatoes
    Greet Tea

    Edamame
    Whole Wheat Bread
    Yogurt
    Broccoli
    Tomatoes
Oatmeal *made into granola for smoothies*

    1. Well, looks at you, Miss Healthy..eating all those things on the list@ :)

      Stir fry...that's a great idea!

  21. I love edamame, steamed (either in the pod or shelled), mixed with with salt, chili powder, maybe some garlic and oregano too. A sprinkle of lemon juice.
Stir fried (any basic stir fry recipe) is great too.

They are found in all the grocery stores around here, in the freezer case. Just steam or microwave.

Edamame, being soybeans, are high in protein, but have plenty of fat also. Soy beans is where soy oil comes from (vegetable oil).

  22. I've tried Edamame but did not like it even though I like most veggies and beans/legumes.

We eat most of the things on that list but I don't do green tea. It makes me really nauseous but I like black tea just fine.

    enjoy your pizzas!

  23. I love edamame! I used to buy it at Sams, but haven't seen it lately. I will have to check again. I steam it and serve it with sea salt. My kids love poppong them out of the pods (sometimes at each other!) and dipping them in the sea salt.
