Spider Mustard

This type of innocent looking lettuce almost took my life
last night while eating dinner!  And when I looked it up
to see the proper name, I had to laugh!  Spider Mustard?
Well, with a name like that, no wonder it was deadly!

Actually, I choked on it!  One little leaf slid down my
throat before I was ready and half of it was down my
wind pipe.  I didn't have enough air to give a good cough
and yet when I tried to take a breath, the lettuce went
further into my wind pipe!  Quite the horrible predicament!
After trying to cough, breathe, gag and cry, I managed a tiny
'Help!' but The Mister said, "What do you want me to do?"
haha....like I could answer him!  Anyway, I finally just
reached down my throat and got a hold of one end of the
thing and pulled it out.  Wow.  That was awful!

So, in my spirit of thankfulness this month, I'm happy that
after all the things I've been through, I didn't get taken
out by a little leaf!  hahahaha!

And next time you eat that Sweet Mesclun Salad Mix,
be wary of the Spider Mustard! :)

  19. Wow, what an awful experience! Echoing what everyone else has said, I'm really glad you're ok. I'm amazed that your throat isn't really sore after all that coughing! And just the name, "spider lettuce", conjures all sorts of weird imagery.

    1. haha...well, that's just it...I couldn't cough...I couldn't take in any air. Yeah, that name is just strange! hahaha.

  21. Yikes! That sounds like a dangerous salad! I've choked on a corn chip--in a restaurant no less. Its a horrid feeling. I kept thinking "I'm going to puke or die or something, and in front of a whole room full of people." ha

  23. Yikes, how very frightening. Seriously, Betsy, I am so glad that you are OK. I had an awful experience with choking with my son years ago...we almost lost him. Choking is no laughing matter. That said...OK, your limerick about choking on a leaf and your life was brief? Pretty funny now that you are OK. (o:

Uh? Call 911!! first, then slap me on the back, then call 911! I'd even go for that southern hind lick
ma-nuuuu-ver if it would help! ;)

All funny aside...Thank God you're ok! I've had this happen and at the time it's no laughing matter.
And guess what? Hubby was no help at all. None. My throat was scratchy for a couple days after. It also makes you very cautious when you next eat. I stick with the old non-nutrious crunchy iceberg lettuce now.

    Blessings Betsy!
