Smart Bird!

Did you see this story?

Pet parakeet returned to Japanese owner after telling police his address

SAGAMIHARA, Japan -- A pet parakeet was returned to its Japanese owner Wednesday after the brainy bird told police its home address near Tokyo. The male bird, called Piko-chan, escaped early Sunday morning from his home in the city of Sagamihara and remained at large before being coaxed into perching on the shoulder of a guest at a nearby hotel.

He was handed over to local police, but Piko-chan did not speak until Tuesday evening, when he blurted out the names of the city and district where his owner's home is located, a police spokesman said. The stunned cops then listened as the parakeet produced the home's block and street number.

His owner, a 64-year-old woman, once lost another parakeet after it flew away and was determined not to make the same mistake. "So the owner decided to teach the address to this parakeet after she bought it at a pet store two years ago," a police spokesman said. "The bird's name was found to be Piko-chan as it said, 'You're pretty, Piko-chan."

And here he meets the press in Japan.
They really do mimic the human voice...he sounds just like his owner! ha.

So how come my parakeets only sing?  ha.  Actually, I read somewhere that if you want them to learn to talk and be more affectionate with you, you should only buy one.  If they have another parakeet to bond with they most likely will not bond so closely with you.
I told Mr. Bird about Piko-Chan. :)
I think he prefers a companion.  In fact, this albino sweetie is his third wife!

Maybe a little love is the secret to his longevity?
He's an old man now at 12 years old!

  1. Wow that is quite the tale
Never knew such talking could set sail
    From parakeets at all
Just thought they sang out at their hall
You should teach Mr. Bird "cat"
Just in case Tiger ever grabs him once more and decided to scat
    The pet saved himself
That is a movie waiting to happen on ones shelf

    2. hahaha...actually the "CHEAP! CHEAP! CHEAP!" he called out got him help fast.
He should say "Meow" and maybe the cats would think he was one of them! lol.
Tiger is still determined to hang on the cage
I guess with he and Oreo it will always be the rage. hahaha.

      Would make a great movie!
To see it would be groovy!

      Yes, you are first!
Maybe eating broccoli gave you a faster burst?
      hahahaha.

    4. haha still help or cat would be better though
As he must always cheep on the go
But I guess it did the trick
As Tiger only got a lick
I bet it will be made into one some day
But then they had Paulie which is sort of like it on display
      So maybe not
The power of the green helps a lot..haha

      Oh dear
      Gloria is deaf I fear

    5. It would be hilarious if he could call out "Cat!"
when one hung on the cage..or even walked by.
He could turn out to be an entertaining guy!
      lol.

    6. LOL his voice might go
With so many at your show
Being calling out cat ever second of the day
As they run around with Nugget and play

    7. haha...a hoarse parakeet can't even tweat
      that wouldn't be so neat
      but Dr. DoLittle is here
so he wouldn't have to fear.
Funny thing is, Tiger's meow sounds a lot like a chirp
maybe he's mimicking them some how?
Maybe Mr Bird should learn to say Meow!

      Delete
    8. Yeah Orlin can chirp like a bird too
      It is what they do
To get the birds in their view
And then they turn them blue
      As they chow them down
And make the poor birds frown

    2. I made another pass through today for a Jasmine and a few clematis' and geraniums :) The sun was beautiful and warm this evening. Hopefully tomorrow I can work outside...AFTER I open the windows for the Spring cleaning. hehe

      Delete
    3. it's so hot and humid here we closed the windows and turned on the A/C! I'd rather it was spring breezes flowing through the house!

I love clematis...The one I have is probably at it's peak right now. It needs somthing taller to grow on, though!

I haven't bought any annuals yet...probably mid May I'll have to make the big trip with a long list. haha. That is always so fun!

      Delete
    4. It always makes me a little sad to turn the A/C on. No more birds singing and breezes :(

I keep feeling like I'm behind in everything this year because the weather has been so different this Spring. It feels like it should be the beginning of April instead of May.

      Delete
    5. Me, too! I'd much rather have the windows open! It's the humidity that I can't stand...combine that with allergies and I'm miserable! :(

You behind? hahaha...I are so far ahead of me! I haven't done a single thing outside! I'm just keeping to the calendar and not the weather. ha. I needed to finish my winter stuff!

      Delete
    6. well I'm lucky enough not to have allergies but agree on the humidity!!

We had to do some major digging in the back yard and we are waiting to get the grading and grass seeding done. I try to avoid looking at it :) ha- it's not working!

      Delete
    7. You're going to want the rain when you get that seed in! Sounds like a big project. But I love big projects like that. They give me a little energy boost..must be the excitement of something. ha.

  9. My daughter had a Fife Canary...which she named Bill, as my father, also named Bill...was from Fife Scotland.
That little canary sang his guts out from morning 'til night....when she moved out, she took him...added to her collection with 3 cats...Bill died about 2 years ago...lived until he was 7, which is apparently quite old...we buried him at our cottage, with a bird "twirly" to mark the spot....
Is there a dry eye in the place???

    Cheers!
    Linda :o)

  23. I didn't hear this story, but it's very sweet!! Thanks for sharing it :) Some birds really do sound human!! It's crazy.

P.S. You have a parakeet too?! lol

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oh, that's a really neat story. Beautiful birds. I wanted a pet bird when I was a kid, but my mother wouldn't let it happen, as she had two growing up-the one got loose and flew out the window never to return, the second one would follow here everywhere like a puppy, they clipped the wings so it wouldn't fly away, but the neigbor's cat got in the yard and killed her bird. So, she never let us get one, citing these stories and also saying that birds are extremely messy. But there still beautiful creatures, I've always admired them. Thanks

    1. Oh dear...poor birds! But those are common stories. We had become used to closing the bird cage but not locking it since there really wasn't a need with only a rabbit in the house. Then I started caring for these feral cats who loved to sit below the cage and watch the birds! One morning The Mister heard this "Cheap! Cheap! Cheap!" and turned to see Tiger running through the house with Mr. Bird in his mouth! He yelled and clapped his hands and Tiger dropped Mr. Bird. He wasn't used to corraling a bird, so he came to wake me up and when I came out, Mr. Bird flew right to me (as if to say 'save me!' haha) There wasn't a mark on him but I thought he'd die from the stress or may some kind of internal injury but he was singing up a storm about an hour later. haha....We've made sure the cage door is locked since then! Good grief!
I couldn't believe that Tiger not only opened the cage door but got in that little door far enough to catch a bird in his mouth and try to escape with it! lol.

  25. I read this & wonder that we humans, as a species, don't give enough credit to other species. They seem so much more elemental as well as intelligent.

  27. That's such an interesting story and so glad it had a happy ending. I had a parakeet that I couldn't teach to speak. I gave it to a friend with two children and within a month it was talking. :)
