Auction Day

Today was a day at the auctions for me, working as a clerk.  Such a nice change from being home, whether it's being Queen of the Zoo or CEO of my gift basket/baking business.  This hermit wannabe does enjoy being out and about once in a while and today was a pleasant change.  Always fun to see what's on the auction block and of course, do some fun people watching. :)

This was probably the most unique item today.  It was a vintage matchbook collection. The matches were removed and the books spread flat like ribbons and mounted on a framed board.  It was probably 6 x 4 feet and very fun to look at.  It went for $50, which I thought was pretty low!  The winner owns a bar in Columbus, Ohio near the Convention Center.  He's going to have it covered with glass and hung on the wall.
What a fun conversation piece!

  1. An up close of some of the matchbook covers.
  2. Fiestaware ~ always popular.  I have a friend who comes to all the auctions.  She collects this and won several pieces!
  3. Ammunition boxes ~ lots of these today!
  4. Loved this gravy boat.
  5. The box lots...my favorite.  If you really want to bid on a box, you don't have to pay more than $1-$2 for the whole thing.  But most people want one thing in the box and leave the rest for the trash...that fun trash that I like to look through at the end of the day. :)  I picked up a few things, but nothing really too exciting ~ a bag of large squares of felt, some acrylic paints, and a stoneware vase.
  6. Vintage milk jugs.  Always amazed that they go for a very high price!

Tomorrow it's back to being Queen of the Zoo with grocery shopping and other errands!

  6. Wow there are a ton of matchbooks on that wall
That will look good it a bar's hall
Not sure what else could be done
With such a thing although looking at it would be fun
People planning to blow stuff up as well
Enough ammuntion there to send many to Hell
Of course they were empty right?
No nut job extremists tried to bid on them to show their might

    1. lol...yep they were empty, it's true
wouldn't want Drazin-like people bidding on a slew
      of ammunition
      with a bad ambition.
      lol.

    2. haha not sure what Drazin would do
With such an actual thing in view
Might blow up the crazy crew

  7. I think I would like sitting in on an auction every once in a while, so long as I had a bottle of hand sanitizer handy for after using the "outhouse". :)

The Red Admirals are here today!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I bring my own bottle! But we have an inside restroom when we are at our regular location! It's only when we are at a private property or something like that. Still...I use my hand sanitizer a lot. Money is germy! And people do weird things like lick their fingers to count their bills. hahaha. Or ask to use my pen. Or cough on me. hahaha.

    2. The red admirals are safer with you! My cats keep eating them!

  8. wow, lot's of matchbooks! not sure if I would have the patience to hoard them all till I would have a sizable collection. I would like the people watching :) always interesting. kinda like those ammo boxes and we have one of those milk cans :) we use it to store the hockey sticks - ha

  9. haha, I know, I think it happened because I was in a frenzy of cleaning up one day and it was the first convenient thing to use for their collection :) have a grand time tomorrow out and about looking for those pussy willows. good luck finding them!

    1. Actually, I love repurposing things like that...it's makes things seem so much more interesting!

I have pussy willow on my list. I'm going to try to find some cut ones and see if they will root. If not..maybe a bush from the garden center would be a nice mother's day gift! :)

  18. Auction? I'm already there. :)

First let me say, how MUCH I've enjoyed getting to know you. You are such a gracious, welcoming person and I appreciate that more than you know. So ty!

And second, thanks for the idea on what to get my Mother for Mother's day (May 13th for those who read this and were wondering when it was, hee hee). You posted, "gift basket" Bingo! The web is full of different kinds of baskets so I know I will find one just for her. Brilliant idea!

"Fiestaware ~ always popular" - I know! I really like the warm colors. One of each, please.

If I could, I'd take my mother to one of these auctions because I know she'd love it. Of course, I'd have to spoil her with something she might fancy. I had to laugh at your people watching comment. My mother taught me that when I was young and I taught my daughter. Such fun! I hope you had a spectacular time!

  23. Oh wow, that matchbbook collection was so much fun to see! I agree that it going for $50 was a steal. It sounds like the bar owner has a good idea, however, and I'm sure it will be a nic eattraction in his bar. Are the auctuons items from estate sales or do people donate them?

    2. I imagine an auction is a good way to sell everything from an estate quickly. I'd love to go to one someday.
