Today was a day at the auctions for me, working as a clerk. Such a nice change from being home, whether it's being Queen of the Zoo or CEO of my gift basket/baking business. This hermit wannabe does enjoy being out and about once in a while and today was a pleasant change. Always fun to see what's on the auction block and of course, do some fun people watching. :)
This was probably the most unique item today. It was a vintage matchbook collection. The matches were removed and the books spread flat like ribbons and mounted on a framed board. It was probably 6 x 4 feet and very fun to look at. It went for $50, which I thought was pretty low! The winner owns a bar in Columbus, Ohio near the Convention Center. He's going to have it covered with glass and hung on the wall.
What a fun conversation piece!
- An up close of some of the matchbook covers.
- Fiestaware ~ always popular. I have a friend who comes to all the auctions. She collects this and won several pieces!
- Ammunition boxes ~ lots of these today!
- Loved this gravy boat.
- The box lots...my favorite. If you really want to bid on a box, you don't have to pay more than $1-$2 for the whole thing. But most people want one thing in the box and leave the rest for the trash...that fun trash that I like to look through at the end of the day. :) I picked up a few things, but nothing really too exciting ~ a bag of large squares of felt, some acrylic paints, and a stoneware vase.
- Vintage milk jugs. Always amazed that they go for a very high price!
Tomorrow it's back to being Queen of the Zoo with grocery shopping and other errands!
♥
Your auctions look like so much fun! I love Fiestaware.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a single piece! ha. My friend I mentioned can serve 25 people on hers...she's really collected a lot!

DeleteI thought she was nude, too, but she has a pale peach swimsuit on. hahaha.
DeleteI know..Gloria, if you and I went to an auction, we could really buy up all the dishes, couldn't we? lol.
yeah...queen of the zoo...one of my crowns. lol.
Deleteahh some men really will enjoy this nude woman:) lol
DeleteI know Betsy Im lost when I saw these things old or new I love lovely china, LOL

DeleteYou always have the most beautiful dishes in your post photos!

DeleteI see you have beautiful new photos of leaves turning colors on your sidebar! So lovely! It was warm here today..almost like summer!
here too, we are in autumn but still we have warm days and today was hot!
DeleteSoon it will be winter
DeleteAnd she'll have to smash a printer
Oh dear
Could cause fear
wow, that is a lot of matchbooks, I like that gravy boat as well. Looks like someone left some cases of beer behind too :)
ReplyDeleteIt IS a lot of matchbooks! Quite a collection...wish I knew the history behind it or how long it took someone to collect them. Would be interesting to know the dates on them, too!
Deletenice...the matchbook collage is really cool...that will def be a winner for the bar....and the old milk jugs are really cool too...
ReplyDeleteI actually thought about bidding on the matchbooks! ha.
DeleteLooks like this was a great auction! That's quite a collection of matchbooks. I think the guy got a good deal.
ReplyDeleteI think he did, too! He was quite thrilled when he checked out!
DeleteWow there are a ton of matchbooks on that wall
ReplyDeleteThat will look good it a bar's hall
Not sure what else could be done
With such a thing although looking at it would be fun
People planning to blow stuff up as well
Enough ammuntion there to send many to Hell
Of course they were empty right?
No nut job extremists tried to bid on them to show their might
lol...yep they were empty, it's true
Deletewouldn't want Drazin-like people bidding on a slew
of ammunition
with a bad ambition.
lol.
haha not sure what Drazin would do
DeleteWith such an actual thing in view
Might blow up the crazy crew
Of course I wouldn't mind that for a few
I think I would like sitting in on an auction every once in a while, so long as I had a bottle of hand sanitizer handy for after using the "outhouse". :)
ReplyDeleteThe Red Admirals are here today!
I bring my own bottle! But we have an inside restroom when we are at our regular location! It's only when we are at a private property or something like that. Still...I use my hand sanitizer a lot. Money is germy! And people do weird things like lick their fingers to count their bills. hahaha. Or ask to use my pen. Or cough on me. hahaha.
DeleteThe red admirals are safer with you! My cats keep eating them!
Deletewow, lot's of matchbooks! not sure if I would have the patience to hoard them all till I would have a sizable collection. I would like the people watching :) always interesting. kinda like those ammo boxes and we have one of those milk cans :) we use it to store the hockey sticks - ha
ReplyDeleteI know..I have seen collections in big glass jugs or bowls. They do look neat. And that'a s pretty expensive hockey stick holder! lol!
Deletehaha, I know, I think it happened because I was in a frenzy of cleaning up one day and it was the first convenient thing to use for their collection :) have a grand time tomorrow out and about looking for those pussy willows. good luck finding them!
ReplyDeleteActually, I love repurposing things like that...it's makes things seem so much more interesting!
DeleteI have pussy willow on my list. I'm going to try to find some cut ones and see if they will root. If not..maybe a bush from the garden center would be a nice mother's day gift! :)
I think you have a great mix with your basket business, and the auction job and home life with your beautiful boys, and husband, ( I don't know if he's beautiful, ha), sounds like a good life!
ReplyDeleteIt does have a nice variety in it, I agree. But my favorite thing is to stay home! ha.
DeleteYou're the master extraordinaire of multi-tasking.
ReplyDeletePerhaps it's time for a raise! :)
a raise...oh, I totally agree! lol. Put in a good word for me, won't you? :)
DeleteThat matchbox collection is different!! I've never seen anything like that. I couldn't tell what it was. It looked like an awesome piece of vintage art.
ReplyDeleteIt was different...I wanted to spend some time reading them! ha.
DeleteSounds like a great way to spend your time. Some interesting lots, there.
ReplyDeletethanks, martin...it's never the same...that's what I love about it!
DeleteAuctions always bring out the amateur antique-er in me! Definitely not healthy for my wallet haha.
ReplyDeleteOh I know...I've bid on a few things myself while working there! Always fun!
DeleteHi Betsy .. there's always a buried treasure somewhere isn't there - we never know until we look. The match book collection looks great for a bar - and at least will be appreciated .. cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteSo happy when you can get out and get to spend time with interesting 'stuff'...and then share with us, your 'fans'. LOVE the gravy boat too....have a terrific Thursday Friend.
ReplyDeleteit was good to get out! I have to be forced...but then I enjoy it! hahaha.
DeletetAlways fun to hang with you at Auction Betsy! They are SO much fun!
ReplyDeleteThe match book art was my FAVORITE...LOVED it. I want to go visit the bar it will hang in!
it was fun! And it went smoothly! yay! ha.
DeleteAuction? I'm already there. :)
ReplyDeleteFirst let me say, how MUCH I've enjoyed getting to know you. You are such a gracious, welcoming person and I appreciate that more than you know. So ty!
And second, thanks for the idea on what to get my Mother for Mother's day (May 13th for those who read this and were wondering when it was, hee hee). You posted, "gift basket" Bingo! The web is full of different kinds of baskets so I know I will find one just for her. Brilliant idea!
"Fiestaware ~ always popular" - I know! I really like the warm colors. One of each, please.
If I could, I'd take my mother to one of these auctions because I know she'd love it. Of course, I'd have to spoil her with something she might fancy. I had to laugh at your people watching comment. My mother taught me that when I was young and I taught my daughter. Such fun! I hope you had a spectacular time!
Did you know you can log-in through Google and use your Blogger account on my word press blog for comments? Click the link for Log-in, then click the G, allow permissions to my blog thru your chosen email, and then allow it to turn over...and there you are. Sorry if you already knew this. Accounts don't really show how users log-in only that they do. I've allowed 4 different ways to log-in so I hope that helps to make things easier for visitors. Had I known before I got so involved and committed to the WP, I might have joined Blogger instead because it seems so popular.
You are so sweet, you know that? :)
DeleteA gift basket would be perfect for mother's day! I've made so many for that very day! She will love it!
That's good to know because I bought one. :) Well, it's a gift box; similar but different but not the same.
DeleteI think the matchbook collection is so neat!!!
ReplyDeleteYour auctions have good stuff.....maybe I'll take a road trip....lol
please do! but you better wait until that grandbaby arrives! ha.
DeleteI've never thought of loving a gravy boat, per se, but you know, it is beautiful! and yes, you are so right, Betsy, what a marvellous convo piece indeed. A little ironic though if a non smoking zoned bar. hee.
ReplyDeleteI just meant that I thought the shape and color were attractive. :)
Deletea non smoking bar...yes, but that would make the matchbooks seem even more vintage, right?
true, true-- a relic form a bygone era.
DeleteBetsy!!! the quince jam post is ready come when you like (lol) I dedicate to you LOL
ReplyDeletethanks for telling me...and I loved the post! I wish I could taste it!
DeleteJust a great gravy boat...love the yellow. You have such an eye to find treasures in trash!!
ReplyDeleteIt's very cheery in yellow, isn't it? ;)
DeleteOh wow, that matchbbook collection was so much fun to see! I agree that it going for $50 was a steal. It sounds like the bar owner has a good idea, however, and I'm sure it will be a nic eattraction in his bar. Are the auctuons items from estate sales or do people donate them?
ReplyDeleteIt was a very neat item, wasn't it? The items are from estate sales. Fun!
DeleteI imagine an auction is a good way to sell everything from an estate quickly. I'd love to go to one someday.
DeleteYou should check there locally...I'm sure there are some good ones in NYC! They are fun even if you don't bid! :)
DeleteLove the matchbook board. I have a few matchbooks in my own collection. :)
