Black Interior Doors

A few weeks ago I mentioned that The Mister was watching Property Brothers on HGTV and saw a renovation where they painted all the interior doors in the house black. He said they had grey and taupe walls just like us and the black doors were gorgeous. Well, I said, "Let's do it!" And before he could even blink, I had purchased the paint!
I did a little bit of searching online to see if I could find some photos, since I didn't see the program that he did. I guess the rage of black interior doors began a couple of years ago! There were several interior design websites that showcased them, and I loved the look. I was imagining a full two-day weekend to get the job done, but it ended up being 3 Saturdays and we still have a few more doors to do before the project is complete! I thought we would paint them right where they hung, but when we decided to switch out the brass hardware to brushed nickle, each door had to come down and that added a lot of time.
We used Olympic Interior Semi Gloss in Soft Black.
A before and after shot. I love the change! And I don't miss the typical builder's white doors. It was kind of like getting rid of that 'builder's beige' on the walls of a newly built house. They look richer and more custom than the traditional white six panel doors that we had before.
Before and after in the laundry room. The first of three coats. Three doors at a time. One on the dining room table and two on the kitchen island.
The brushed nickle, which I think goes well with the grey walls and black doors. We needed 5 types of knobs and all new hinges, too. I made a paper template of a hinge to take to the hardware store with me, to make sure I got the correct size.
I thought they might make the rooms seems too dark, but that didn't seem to be the case at all.
I'm linking up with Metamorphosis Monday!

  4. Wow!! I like them a lot!! They look very sharp, and they somehow make the grey look softer and warmer. (even tho there are no beaded curtains :)

  5. Just had to kid you one more time about that. :) I'm definately no expert when it comes to interior decorating. I just do what looks good to me in my home. :)

    ReplyDelete
  6. Rebecca ~ oh, me too! I don't follow any rules and usually do something odd that nobody else does! haha.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Guess that's what makes a home feel like home right?

    ReplyDelete
  8. How is your sore throat today Betsy?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Rebecca ~ exactly. Whatever feels right. That's what makes it home.

My sore throat has gotten better throughout the day. Drinking tea helps. :) Now if I could stop with this annoying cough! lol. I stayed home from church, and kept the boys home, too. I think we needed another day to recover. I was sad to miss my coffee with girlfriends, though.

Have you had a nice weekend?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Aren't you glad The Mister saw that program? Your doors are just gorgeous! Yes Black is Beautiful!

I agree with some of the other commenters, they look elegant!!!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Wanda ~ yes, I am glad. I don't think I would have thought of it on my own. It does add a bit of class, doesn't it? Not to mention, fresh paint was great to cover all those fingerprints! :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. Pretty good! We were all loaded in the van to go to church and the baby threw up--so I'm at home too. Makes the day seem sorta long, but I don't mind too much. I rested a lot too. He seems ok now. :)

    ReplyDelete
  13. Rebecca ~ aww...glad he's ok. Maybe it was just a big burp. Seemed like we would finally get everyone loaded in the van to go to church and someone would fill their diaper. lol.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yeah, that's pretty popular around here too. :) (diaper filling when we are ready to go somewhere) I'm waiting for Pat to appear and retch over this conversation. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Wow sooo much better than the white
    Black is a wonderful sight
It doesn't make them seem dark at all
And seems to in a way add more presence to your hall
Going right to town with your zoo
What next? Redo the umm loo..haha

    ReplyDelete
  16. hahaha...wow Rebecca...did you feel Pat's presence?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Pat ~ thanks and I'm glad you approve!
I think it looks a lot better, too!
    And how did you know
the bath is the next on the show
    for a major redo
    You're a mind reader, too!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I saw that episode too ... you did a great job on the doors, I love the rich look!

    ReplyDelete
  31. well Rebecca a time ago I never made Ice cream I begin the last summer and I really enjoy cause you can made all Ice cream you like! I have in my blog and avocado Ice cream! but my favorites are from fruits!

    ReplyDelete
  32. homemade icecream is always the best.

but I like Breyers. Do you have that kind, Gloria?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks, Helen! I wish I would have seen it! I even tried to find it online but couldn't. I guess it was a choice of three and the couple chose another house, so it wasn't featured long on the episode.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Nope betsy but we have others from the States but are so cost, and someoenes of Sears cause they have a Supermarket here. But we had a lovely Ice cream like Suspiro Limeño did you know? is a peruvian dessert, but here we have an Ice cream

    ReplyDelete
  35. Gloria, what I should do is live near you, and you could make ice cream for me, and my kids could play with your dogs. :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. I would like to buy an Ice cream machine but I cannot at the moment, maybe soon:)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Gloria, Have you always lived in Chile, or did you live in Peru when you were younger?

    ReplyDelete
  38. ohh Rebecca whhat nice would be I love to share that I make. Today I made some blueberries muffins, and are so good

    ReplyDelete
  39. Nope, always in Chile, but I was in Argentina, Bolivia and Brasil (rio de JAneiro) many times I dont travel, I hope some day go to states I have a lot of friends there

    ReplyDelete
  40. I can go to your home rebecca and helped with the kids (lol)

    ReplyDelete
  41. No, I've never heard of that kind, but I'm sure it's wonderful. I agree with you..if you make it, you can make the flavor you want..and use the fruits you have. yum.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I have an icecream machine but many times I just put it in a pan like you do...it's so easy that way and turns out really nice, too!

    ReplyDelete
  43. And you can put splenda or other in Ice cream and not a lot of sugar like that Ice cream that we buy.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Well to the summer you are ready to make Ice cream Im not sure but I think I have about 20 recipes of Ice cream in my blog!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yes, Gloria you could visit Betsy, and then come farther north to Michigan, and visit me. I live about 50 miles north of nowhere. hahaha

    ReplyDelete
  46. I can't wait, Gloria...I'm going to make a lot of them. Even that avacado icecream sounds really good! I bet it is so creamy!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Pat to eat
As the cat was chewing his feet
So with the diaper talk I was kind of slow
They make good poop bombs just so you know
Find an enemy and let them fly
Hit them right in the eye
    And damn I'm good
The loo is next? use my psychic powers more often I should

    ReplyDelete
  48. The doors make the room look very elegant!! Yay! Take care
    x

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yes Rebecca maybe some day, I would have a make a tour by the States I have friends in New York too:)

Betsy I see I have 25 Ice creams recipes, and hope to make more, the avocado is special and delicious but not all like. Is like nuts.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Poop bombs huh? Guess I'll have to remember that if I ever have any enemies come around. :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. Because Betsy, and I were talking about poopy diapers. :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. OK dears I have to go out again! see you later or tomorrow maybe:)

    ReplyDelete
  53. aaah is OK! well see you later maybe:)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Pat ~ Oh, those bombs sound deadly
    and might even end badly
if your aim was on target
and you used the right gadget.
    ha.

Yep, the bathroom is the next on the list
although I'll need more money in my fist
before I can do that project
    and make it look perfect.
    :)

    ReplyDelete
  55. Betsy, I'm looking for a new shower curtain for my children's bathroom. Not redoing the whole thing, but I just need something kind of fun, and VERY functional. :)

    ReplyDelete
  56. maybe those bombs would be good for those toxic friendships? lol.

    night, Gloria!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Kitty and Marty ~ thanks, ladies! :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Well, now there's a thought. Problem is, I have trouble with confrontation with words--don't think I could do it with diapers. :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. lol...no, I suppose it wouldn't work...unless you hid or wore a disguise. Maybe you could get Silver to run them over with his car. haha. He seems all too willing to do that for people.

    ReplyDelete
  60. You think he would throw diapers at people for me? LOL :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. That would be having someone do your dirty work for you--literally.:)

    ReplyDelete
  62. That is so true.
Sounds like a Pat kind of post.
Although he uses empty Pringles cans
to clean out his cat litter pan.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Remind me to never dig through his dumpster. :) Not that I dumpster dive. :)

    ReplyDelete
  64. Rebecca ~ I'm going to Trader Joes this week and I'm going to get pumpkin seeds and the other stuff to make your granola. :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. This is wonderful, Betsy! I love the clean lines and contrast. Every time we start a home improvement project I should double my time estimate...but they always pay off in the end...nice work!

    ReplyDelete
  66. These came out great. What a fantastic update you guys did.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Hope you like it Betsy!! I didn't think about Trader Joes being a good place to look for some of those ingredients. We don't have one close. I know they carry some harder to find stuff like that.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Nice transformation! I think the new nickel hardware makes the color change complete.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Rebecca ~ yeah, I'm going there with a girlfriend this week..the perfect place to get that kind of stuff!

Anita ~ yes, I should have known it would take longer! And we still aren't done!

Michelle ~ thank you. It's a huge difference! I like it a lot. Such a change after having white doors for 23 years!

Stevie ~ yes, the brass just didn't look right anymore! Of course that tripled the price of the project. haha.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Okay, now you know that I have to love the look of black doors!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Well I guess we better sue
So you can get a brand new loo
    Now where is a monkey
And yeah I'll make the diapers go kerplunky
    Right in your foe's eye
And laugh a bit as they cry
    A dumpster diver too
I'll throw in an extra cat poop filled pringle can for you

    ReplyDelete
  72. No, I have never dived in a dumpster in my life. I HAVE picked furniture from a curb, but no dumpsters. :)

    ReplyDelete
  73. Pat ~ you're sounding like a super hero there!
We'll have to get you a costume to wear.
Do you want a cape and mask
or something different, may I ask?
    ha.

    ReplyDelete
  74. LOL I wouldn't want to see the costume of that
The guy who wins his battles by throwing strat

    ReplyDelete
  75. wait..I know
you'd rather have a germ orb and go with the flow
maybe not need any clothes at all
just like jack and emily, you know.
    lol

    ReplyDelete
  76. They look great, Betsy! I've never seen a home with black interior doors, but I'm loving the look. Very classy.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Thanks, Christian! If you put in a google search, you will find lots! Who knew? ha.

    ReplyDelete
  78. yes you should be proud of me. All the stashed ones are still there for tomorrow. ha

    ReplyDelete
  79. haha that could mean I went to Hell
Or gave the Time Axis same well
Or the whole lovey dovey ordeal
But then I'd have to get off my butt and go find someone real..haha

    ReplyDelete
  80. Pat ~ someone real or maybe half goddess
    that loved your ocd oddness.
    lol.

    ReplyDelete
  81. LOL that would do
Miss Priss and Orlin would like her than too

    ReplyDelete
  82. and if she talked in rhyme
    that would just be sublime!

    ReplyDelete
  83. that looks very cool betsy...it has a certain elegance to it that is very nice...great job

    ReplyDelete
  84. haha I suppose the cat
    Would surely like that

    ReplyDelete
  85. OK I'll be on the look out all around
    and if she's found
I'll send her to your town.
    :)

    ReplyDelete
  86. Oooo...it really makes the doors look more sophisticated!

    ReplyDelete
  87. Thanks, Kathy! I thought so, too! :) It really added something to them.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Black doors seem like such a simple fix! Why isn't this more popular?! It looks so much better than the simple white.

P.S. I love that your mister watches HGTV!!!! While I'm not big on the renovation/design shows, International house hunters is addicting :P

    ReplyDelete
  89. Jax ~ International House Hunters is his very favorite! :)

    ReplyDelete
  90. The black doors look fabulous! Where have I been?? I didn't know black doors where the newest thing.
    Ha!
    I love them though!!
Hmmmm...wonder what others colors would work???
    Thinking cap is now on....!!!
    Hugs
    SueAnn

    ReplyDelete
  91. SueAnn~ no worries, I didn't know either! lol.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I love them and I would never have thought to do that!! Hmm, I am getting ready to paint my walls gray, so maybe:-)

    ReplyDelete
  93. Looks incredible.. what a rich change!! So elegant in the after photos!

    ReplyDelete
  94. The mom in me says that is VERY good for sticky hands and fingerprints too!

    ReplyDelete
  95. What can I say. These doors are gorgeous, Betsy!

    ReplyDelete
  96. A lot of work, but worth the effort. I love the dramatic look of the black doors and new hardward. Lovely home, by the way.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Janelle ~ thanks, dear. That means a lot coming from a stylish, classy, artist like yourself! :)

    ReplyDelete
  98. Janice ~ thanks! I'm really happy with the look...and I agree..it is a dramatic difference..especially in person!

    ReplyDelete
  99. Betsy, I haven't been visiting for ages~ glad to see you've done such a great transformation to your house! This really makes a difference when people have pressed wood doors instead of solid wood- it makes them look so much more expensive.
Much as I have liked the look and have actually contemplated doing this project, I have stained woodwork and solid wood doors. You never see the combination of stained woodwork with a painted door! Plus, no way am I re-painting every inch of molding in this house! LOL
So I'll just enjoy seeing other people's cool look. Maybe in the net house.... :-) Sue

    ReplyDelete
  100. That would be "next" house since I can't edit~

    ReplyDelete
  101. Sue ~ thanks for visiting. And hey..I hope you never have to move from solid wood doors to pressed wood. lol. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  102. I love black in a home, it is the best accent color there is. LOVE your doors, looks all brand new! :D

    ReplyDelete
  103. Thanks, Julie! I'm loving the look! :)

    ReplyDelete
  104. So stylish! Well done you two!

    ReplyDelete
  105. They look really smart - great job. I think painting doors is hard work to stop them going streaky. Maybe it helps to lay them flat.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Betsy I made a new post if you want see when you have time:)) see you later

    ReplyDelete
  107. I like them! Black paint makes everything look richer. I bet they will be easier to keep clean, as an added bonus.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I did black doors in our last house and just loved them!! I think they really add a whole new level of style to your decor!! LOVE 'em!! (It does always take longer than you think and one change-- paint-- always leads to another-- hardware!). Great job!! Looks fabulous! blessings ~ Tanna

    ReplyDelete
  109. Betsy, yes, it does look very elegant, you always surprise me i would never think that gray wall or black door may look so beautiful, wow! and i have to say you made a job of a professional painter!!! not that i'm expert but it looks completely perfect to me :-)

    ReplyDelete
  110. oooh, i love black doors! so chic - you must get on pinterest!!!!!!
    hugs

    ReplyDelete
  111. wow, you always impress me with your finesse for tools and such. I couldn't imagine even beginning this project, let alone doing hinges and whatnot. Anyway, it looks very classic and sophisticated. I expect now to hear mellow jazz coming from the hallways.

As it is, I love black EXTERIOR doors too...with gold knockers and handles and envelope boxes. Very London. Very classic. mix that with some black wrought iron gates and such and I'm set. :)

    ReplyDelete
  112. Mmm ~ classic and sophisticated. That's exactly the look I was going for!

Mrs. Mordecai ~ thanks...and wow..it's good to see you. It's been a long time!
