I worked an auction Friday and of course, had fun looking through the leftovers when we were all done. Here's what I brought home.
-
A hand painted bowl from Germany with a handful of seashells in it.
-
A basket full of vintage buttons.
-
A biscuit barrel shaped like a windmill with a wicker handle.
-
A couple of baskets, a blue Ball jar with zinc lid included, and an old Scrabble game, among other goodies. My friend Julie is collecting Scrabble games for a re-purposing project, so I picked it up for her. The original price tag said Montgomery Ward, $2.95. :)
I'm not sure what I'll keep or if I'll incorporate these things into gifts or sell on eBay. I'm still always amazed that these things were paid for but left for the trash! If anyone knows anything about the biscuit barrel, I'd love to hear it. I do have another one with the traditional shape and cherries painted on it. It has a similar handle on it. Maybe I should start a collection. There is some Dutch blood on The Mister's side, after all. :)
♥
I think you may just have THE best job ever!
ReplyDeleteYou find treasures, I find junk. What's with that? (-:
ReplyDeleteAnita ~ I have no idea! haha I'm always amazed. The little biscuit barrel was in a box of broken dishes. I had to dig around for the lid. Couldn't believe it wasn't damaged.
ReplyDeleteAlways a bunch of nice stuff... but I think your last "haul" was better.
ReplyDeletetrue...the stuff was worth more. I'm always amazed I find anything at all! ha.
ReplyDeleteNice goodies but I really, really would love to get my hands on those buttons!
ReplyDeleteOMG Betsy I love all, I have seashells here in bottles and jars and love too the little house (I collect them) so if I lived there will be dangerous! Love yyour Treasures betsy, xx gloria
ReplyDeleteJill ~ you can have them! Seriously! If you pay for the shipping...I'll mail them to you! :)
ReplyDeletegloria ~ I collect sea shells, too! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat "trash" you found at that auction. Amazing what is special to one person and another just leaves.
ReplyDeletevery cool...nice on the old scrabble game too....you get some great treasures....
ReplyDeleteI have two biscuit jars. My first one I got with my grandparents back in the late 80s or early 90s before kids when hubby and I lived in Missouri. We went over to a little town about 30 minutes away and went in all the little shops downtown and I found it. My grandma bought it for me. I remember her telling me about one of her friends that had a collection of them. Mine doesn't have the bamboo/wicker handle even though it has the handles where it used to hang. It's one of my favorite things though.
ReplyDeleteKayren ~ I bet you could find a handle from someone who has a broken jar. Have you looked on ebay? I'll look at the auctions! ha. Nobody would know what that was all by itself! :)
ReplyDeleteBetsy maybe we were sisters in other life?? gloria
ReplyDelete@Gloria: Wow, if that's true, I wish I'd grown up next door to your family in "that" life, haha! (I'd even have brought you both seashells when I visited!)
ReplyDeleteYou are kidding again Silver? but really I would live near Betsy, we wouls talk so much, really I
ReplyDeletehave a sister and love her, but she really dont talk with me, she is so busy always :)
aww...Gloria...I love that. :) Yes, I'm sure we must have been!
ReplyDelete@Gloria: If you two lived together, I'd bring over all sorts of little gifts. Not just seashells. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Silver you are so sweet! gloria
ReplyDeleteHi Betsy!Oh Im a button collector.Loveeeeeee that junk lol.Seriously how can people get rid of buttons I love them ha!Wow I would be drooling if I found them for free.
ReplyDeleteOh wow - what an assortment of just utterly charming things!!! Yay!!
ReplyDeleteTake care
x
Maybe Jill and I would have a big fight going about these buttons haha.
ReplyDelete@Gloria: There aren't many women who call me "sweet." Your "sister" Betsy's done it a few times here on her blog, though!
ReplyDeleteSo if you sell on ebay it will be she sells seashells by the sea shore
ReplyDeleteOr by the door
Since no sea is around
Nice treasures once again found
Going dutch as well at your place
Geez now you just need an Australian shoe lace..haha
I don't think I'll ever be able to look at the word leftovers the same again though
Of course that's a whole different show
oh I love treasures, better still if they are free!
ReplyDeletePat ~ leftovers...lol...you crack me up! Only you would think of food. No food in this post, just for you!
ReplyDeleteI've been looking for a biscuit barrel with a handle attached to the base for years. Just cant find one anywhere, not even a second hand one.
ReplyDeleteThe one I have now doesn't have a handle and it's awkward to carry with one hand, especially when I'm carrying a whisky glass as well.
You just cant beat a Gingernut biccie dunked in whisky - heavenly!
Hi Wendy ~ I'll have to keep an eye out for one for you! Actually...look on ebay...I saw many while looking this one up. Good prices, too. I searced for "biscuit barrel with wicker handle" Say hi to your dad for me, too! :)
ReplyDeletehahaha oh but I wasn't talking about food this time
ReplyDeleteLet's just say it has to do with strat and non rhyme
Oh...fun!
ReplyDeleteFrom the trash...to Betsy's treasures! 8~)
Mommy 2
I think these are so great to do crafts with you can resell again and as basket fillers.Buttons are always needed the Dutch wind mill is very pretty as is the sea shell bowl.
ReplyDeleteThe bowl filled with nuts and covered by saran wrap and ribbons would be a great Christmas gift. Or maybe put some soaps with sea shells.
The windmill would look nice in a basket with tea and two cups and saucers. Bits and pieces put together make great gifts.
So great to see all these treasures and I wonder why others just see it as trash. But it is truly their loss and your gain.
ReplyDeleteI am curious as to what a biscuit barrel actually is. Is it like a cookie jar or was it supposed to hold real biscuits? I think biscuits can mean different things in different countries. Does it have a date stamped on it? Really interesting things you are finding.
Thanks again for sharing them. I truly enjoy seeing them.
God bless.
Great finds dear Betsy, I love that bowl with the shells.;))
ReplyDeletexoxo
MrsU ~ yes, biscuit as in cookie. It would be a cookie jar here in the US. Our cookie jars typically don't have the handle, so I guess that is the distinguishing characteristic.
ReplyDeletelady ~ you have some great ideas there! They would be great used in gift baskets with certain themes!
ReplyDeleteEverytime you post about the auction leftovers, I want to go out and try to find myself a job helping at one! LOL! You have the 'eye' to find the treasures. blessings ~ tanna
ReplyDeleteGood stuff AS ALWAYS!
ReplyDeleteSome of those things would be GREAT additions to your baskets!
I want the shells or the little house!!! Betsy, xxxxx
ReplyDeleteSome day I will take some pictures of my tresures and you will se betsy, gloria
Gloria, I'd love to see your shell collection! :)
ReplyDelete"Gloria, I'd love to see your shell collection!"
ReplyDeleteBefore or after I add to it?
AmyLK ~ oh...I hate scraping windshields! ugh.
ReplyDeleteGreat buys.
ReplyDeleteI just bought my 4th Scrabble came at a sale Saturday. I look forward to seeing how you repurpose it.
You have some great perks with your job! I love sea shells and that pink bowl is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThe Dutch in me is crying out at the wee windmill biscuit barrel! I will have to look on eBay too. What a precious object.
