No, I didn't keep him. I put him back on the house but a few minutes later I couldn't find him! Maybe he'll stick around and eat the bugs in the garden.
Cool to see Maybe he hopped up a tree Although with all the birds, raccoons and cats Even with four siblings he might be eaten like a rat Mine eat any insect they see Even tried to eat a bee But your yard is really turning into a zoo All you need is a lion or two...haha
yikes! it must be praying mantis hatching week! we found about a hundred baby ones today in the antique mall where i work. they hatched out of an old white wooden gate that a vendor brought in to sell. i find the adult ones to be downright creepy but the babies were so delicate and quaint. still loving your kittens. they are adorable!
What a cutie!! I remembering being in grade school...maybe 4th? And the teacher brought in a praying mantis egg-thingy. Looked like a cocoon!! Anyway, we went to lunch and when we came back, it had hatched! Can you say...one million baby praying mantis filled our class room. They were everywhere. I never laughed so hard in my life!!!! And trying to catch them all...too funny. The teacher was beside herself!! Ha! Hugs SueAnn
Seems you are way more brave than I'd ever be!! My JRT, Nelson, got one of these once, a huge one. He let go really fast & he'd normally eat anything :)
There is not an insect more fun to discover and watch than a Praying Mantis, unless, of course, it is a Walking Stick. I've seen one of those only once. Grasshoppers are pretty cool too, just much more common.
julieking ~ they are a little creepy...they look like a science fiction sort of thing to me. But I always seem to have one as a friend. I actually like the big ones better because you can see their heads turn and their eyes look right at you.
You have the best blog Betsy - I look forward to checking in everyday! You always make me smile - something that is not always in great supply. I am such an animal person and have loved seeing the kitties grow - good luck - they are adorable! Happy summer! Kelley
How cute, so tiny. It reminds me of a trip down to Florida once when I brushed through some overhanging leaves, and later found a tiny scorpion crawling through my hair - it startled me a bit, would have enjoyed your baby mantis much more.
I love the praying mantis (I even have one on my son's finger as a permanent header of my blog). I used to be really fond of a little grouping of mantis that lived in our garden, until I researched them and found out they were a non-native breed that eat our more endangered native breed! Ah well, I still think they're cute :D
happygirl ~ someone else mentioned that in the comments and yes, I've heard of that. Do you know why? I'd love to know the reason. They aren't endangered at all. Interesting!
so tiny,, when magnified,, terrifying,,, kinda sweet when little,,
ReplyDeleteI love Praying Mantises, but I've never seen a bay one!
ReplyDeleteVery cool! You always have the best photos from the animal...bird....and insect kingdom!
ReplyDeleteIf you kept him, you might just have to start a Zoo!

ReplyDeleteDo you think it's possible that you may be the only human on the Earth who would post about a praying mantis? It's commendable, and so Betsy!
ReplyDeleteHow sweet, on your finger....Was he saying itsy bitsy prayers...
ReplyDeleteGrandson was over today looking at bugs in my back yard. Tried to catch a grasshopper, but it was too fast.
Have a very sweet day....

I remember as a kid my parents telling me that it was illegal to kill a praying mantis. I also remember thinking how would the police ever know.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cutie!!

ReplyDeletesommler ~ oh my! That is a great story! I've never seen a nest...I'll have to 'google' it so I know next time I happen upon one!
ReplyDeleteMatty ~ I have heard that, too! I always thought that was so weird and why? Are they endangered? Not according to slommler! ha!
