Farm Fresh Eggs

Although I have access to farm fresh eggs in my little
village, I will admit that I've never taken advantage
of that luxury. I guess this city girl just never
really thought about it....until recently!
Remember my friend that was shopping for 'layers'?
I thought she was getting her hair cut, but she was
shopping for some egg-laying hens. She's also the
one that was shopping for nesting boxes, which
I assumed were like the pretty floral patterned ones
in my closet. Well, since that time, she's gotten
the layers and the nesting boxes and her little hens
have been busy! For Christmas, she dropped by with
a carton of fresh eggs and a card. Don't you just love
practical gifts like that? Well, I could tell right away
that the eggs were better...thicker shells, bigger yolks
and yes...better taste. I was surprised at how different
they really were! See the difference in the picture?
Both are 'large' sized eggs.
One is from the grocery and one is from a village hen.
Omelette anyone? Maybe we should sprinkle them
with a little Fleur de Sel? :)

  1. I love fresh eggs....the flavor is so good...no comparison to the pale no flavor store bought eggs. You will be visiting her often (I predict) I wish I had a contact with good eggs.

  2. nanny ~ you could always get yourself some layers and nesting boxes! :) I wonder what Trixie would think??

  3. The farm egg looks so big and much yellower. My gran used to have hens but we don't have access to farm eggs now. I do remember one small snag though - every now and again one was 'bad' and then the smell when you cracked them was disgusting! I suppose sometimes, when collecting them, she overlooked one for a few days.

  4. jenny ~ I have heard that with fresh ones you should always crack them into a separate bowl and not right into a mixer with other ingredients..just in case you get that bad one!

  7. Oh fresh eggs. I grew up on them, but was afraid to reach under the hen to get the eggs... Finally got past it and was able to gather eggs for my mom.

I haven't seen a place for fresh eggs down here.. I think I will look!

  8. When you compare the fresh with the store bought, there is a huge difference. I heard that chicken poop is good for the gardens, too.

  9. I'm so jealous!! Our area is a huge chicken processing plant "mecca" :p so raising your own chickens/eggs is not very common. Lucky you!!

  10. Christine ~ she'd probably be thrilled if I wanted to buy a big bag of that for my garden! LOL!

  11. Now this was a great gift!! At the lake we live near a lot of farms that we buy eggs from. Big difference!! But remember, when making hard boiled eggs, the fresher the egg, the harder it is to peel, so let them sit a few days.

    Jane

  13. I'd like to have fresh eggs instead of the store bought variety, there used to be a sign at the farmers market but sadly it's closed for winter.
    They look wonderful !

  18. Having grown up on a farm, I can appreciate the differences between farm raised and mass produced. I'm with Nanny, wish I had a good source of fresh eggs!

  19. There's nothing like them plus the chooks are so good for your garden. My sister recently went on holiday for a week and I had to look after her two 'girls', Two eggs a day, lovely things. Can't have them here without building a fortress thanks to wiley foxes.

  22. Most interesting. Free range chickens, bigger yolks, more nutritious. No wonder some people are hosting some in their backyard and in the city too.

  23. Betsy! I am and have ALWAYS been an organic egg buyer. We eat a LOT of eggs at The Glen and have a great local farm that supplies them. HUGE difference in your omelets and your baked goods. The shells are NOT treated with the chemicals the grocery store suppliers use AND the color, FLAVOR and size of the eggs is second to none!

Our neighbors across the field TRIED to have laying hens BUT the foxes kept EATING them!

  24. Jill ~ Do you get them from Campbells? My friend sells her eggs to them, so you might be eating the same ones as me!
