Sandwich

I read years ago that studies were done as to how
people taste the layers in a sandwich or a hamburger.
I think it may have been McDonalds or Burger King.
The order of the toppings is done in such a way that they
hit our taste buds in the most palatable way.
I know I have a certain order preference for my sandwiches
and hamburgers. I'm sure most everyone does.
For me, the meat and cheese need to be together.
Always extra mayo, which is on the opposite end of the
sandwich from the meat and it needs to be touching the lettuce.
Tomato and any other toppings can be in the middle.
If it's a burger, onion and ketchup go under the meat.
cheese, tomato and anything else goes on top of the meat.
LOL! I know, I'm complicated. But I bet you have
a few preferences yourself, don't you?

  1. nothing goes under the meat but the bun...i think it is a fear that someone may hide something in my food...mayo on top, lettuce, tomato, pickles, mustard, cheese, meat...i dont know that i have every thought this much about it...lol.

  2. Boy Betsy, you are pretty darn close!!! You sandwich looks delightful and I'm ready to take a bite.

I was in a cafe one time and the friend I was with got so upset when she saw the man in the next booth putting the ketchup on top of his meat... She thought it should be on the bun, and talked about it all afternoon...Some people take their preference real serious. It was really funny.

  3. Brian ~ who's going to hid something under your meat? You crack me up! LOL!

  4. I usually put Miracle Whip -- or mayonnaise, if the former isn't available -- on both slices of bread if it's a regular sandwich. Cheeseburgers are different. Miracle Whip gets spread on the top bun, unless it's a squeeze bottle. Then, ketchup and Miracle Whip both go right on top of the cheeseburger.

  5. Mr. Fox ~ You are the only other person I know that likes both mayo and ketchup on their burger. Although, they would be on separate ends of the burger in my case. ha.

  6. "Separate ends?" What, the far left, and far right? Ha!

(Oops. Maybe I'd better rephrase "far left" and "far right." You knows how I duz hates thet thar political-type talk!)

  7. Well, there wouldn't be anything 'left' about my sandwich! ha. Besides, aren't we talking top and bottom? Do you really lay your burger on it's side? LOL!

  8. Just remember that The Silver Fox has nothing to do with Fox News, doll.

  9. Ha! Yes, now I can tell my husband that I am not alone in my particulars. Mayo always has to touch the meat...always. Mayo always has to be on bottom bun and then the meat - burger, blt, turkey sandwich - anyway you slice it the meat has to touch the mayo. You got me?

Now, Mr. Fox on occasion if the ketchup is room temp, I too will indulge with a little ketchup on my top bun of my burger...but just a little.

  10. Solar ~ you are cute! I'm the opposite..ketchup on meat...mayo on lettuce. ha. Yes, tell your hubs you are not alone!

  11. I do, but I think mine are more neuroses than taste based, otherwise it probably wouldn't matter which end of a hot dog i ate first (and it does, it matters very very very much).

  12. OMG that sandwich looks soooo good..
it is 11:30 pm.. I was heading to bed later than usual.. ll:00 and then my son tells me he needs his foot ball uniform washed for school in the morning.. so i have to stay up and wash it.. now i see that sandwich and now im hungry.. way to go Betsy.. go on to bed..or eat???? hummmmmm!

  13. No, no , no, you've got it all wrong here, Betsy. the tomato goes on the top of the lettuce; the ketchup and mustard (if any) go on the burger itself. Mayo must be very light as it is the only way I can justify the big juicy sandwich in the first place. And then, to boot, you turn the whole thing around and eat it upside down. LOL. ...Umm, just joking on the last bit.

  14. I like my ketchup in the meat itself--IF a burger. If not a burger, well then I woudln't have the ketchup anyway. LOL.

  15. Maybe not about what goes next to each other but my favorite sand is...roasted turkey with provalone, avacado slices, shredded carrots, sliced olives, sunflower seeds and spinach greens! ;D

  16. You are SO funny. And if that is your own photo it's really beautiful. I guess I'll have to think about this one. My daughter ALWAYS has a custard cup with either ranch dressing or mustard to dunk her sandwich/burger in. I thought she would grow out of it but apparently not. I have told her that she uses so much ranch dressing that it should be considered a beverage.

  17. I always put onion and tomato under the meat in a hamburger and the rest on top, but over the meat in a sandwich together with everything else. Toasted sandwiches must have the cheese between the ham and tomato. Also on a hamburger I like mayo mixed with tomato sause and a bit of Worcester sause ie 3-in-1.

  18. I'm with you all the way, Betsy! LOL! AND, I want mustard on the hamburger, too... with the ketchup, smeared together just right. hee hee

  19. Lynne ~ I could dunk my burger in ketchup like that..can never have enough! For my fries, either! :)

  20. How funny! Hubbie is VERY MUCH like that...insisting that his mayo be on one side and his spicy brown mustard on the other! I really don't mind how it goes on...with the exception of IF it is a burger...that the cheese is nicely melted against the burger!

    ;)

  21. I didn't know that actual studies were done on sandwiches. Some people have too much time on their hands :-)

I usually use mustard-first choice Dijon or spicy, but regular will do in a pinch. Unless it's a hamburger, which requires mustard AND ketchup. The fries must be dipped in a combination of both too.

  22. Yum! I havent had breakfast yet,lol I have never really thought about it.I guess for me the cheese and tomatoes onions lettuce and whatever go on top of the meat.Thats the way I always ate burgers.LOL@ Brians comment someones hiding something in his food ha.

  25. right now, that sandwich on the croissant in your picture looks like my favorite - too bad I can't have it for lunch.

  27. Mine would be a veggie burger with the mayo on the bottom bun, cheese on top of the burger, then ketchup and mustard on the top bun. Yum!

  28. My head is spinning!! Not sure how I even eat mine. I think I might need a diagram. :)

  29. This is a rather amusing conversation. I will admit that I like the mayo to be between the bread and vegetable, be it a tomato or the lettuce, but I don't think I've ever thought too much on how to put a burger together.

  30. I think I switch it around a lot, but always with a great deal if thought. Sargent has immutable layering preferences, though!

    ReplyDelete
  31. now that you think of it....i DO put the layers differently than my husband....mmmmmm.

    fun post!

  33. Kathy ~ ketchup and mustard on the fries...now that is a new one to me!

  34. I think I remember you saying something about my special sandwich really just being a burger, but now that I read all about this, I'm thinking you don't have a leg to stand on! Ha!

Burger is always on the bottom bun with nothing in between. For a sandwich, I like meat, lettuce, tomato, then the mustard or mayo or whatever. If there is cheese (provolone on a turkey), it goes between the meat and lettuce.

Funny stuff! Do you know that I have 11 posts on my google reader I hadn't read yet of yours? We started school last Tuesday and I've just been swamped for the last couple of weeks.

  35. Kayren ~ I do remember your special sandwich! ;)

    I've missed you...you sound busy!

  36. I am just enjoying all of your posts....the only definite fact for me is when I put the top piece of bread or bun on ....take a bite immediately before moving the plate....ha
Bun, cheese, meat, tomato, lettuce, then mayo....tomato can't touch the bread...no soggy bread for me.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Nanny ~ that is a very good point...no tomato making the bread soggy! :)

  38. Layer your sandwich perfectly is an important yet simple pleasure.
