The Sea is the current theme for Creative Tuesday!
I've always loved the sea, which is interesting for a life-long
midwestern girl! I have collected sea shells for most of my
life and will always choose the ocean for one of my top vacation
spots. I've been on four cruises and several other beach
vacations. The ocean truly is beautiful! It has a sound all of
it's own, too. It's that same sound you get when you put a
shell up to your ear! It's a vast, deep, echo...a unique
sound of the rolling of waves up onto the shore.

Sketch is done with black ink and colored pencils.
It was copied from one of my own shells, a beautiful
gift a friend brought me from Japan years ago.

I love the sea, too, Betsy. In the UK, we're never too far from the coast and, where I live, in the southern county of Hampshire, the sea is about a 25 minute drive away.
ReplyDeleteWe also love shells. A few weeks ago, we spent a lovely afternoon, collecting with our three year old granddaughter, along the beach. Magical.
oo...we have done one cruise and loved it...would love to do it again...
ReplyDeletei miss florida some days...
I love the ocean too.... And your shell and music, it just perfect..for the ocean has a symphony all of its own.
ReplyDeleteWe were privileged to live in Santa Barbara, CA (on the ocean) for 6 years in the 70's.
One of my fondest memories is taking the older children to school, and then taking my youngest, going the beach, sticking her under my sweatshirt to nurse, and then home for her nap.
To this day she had a deep love for the ocean...
Wanda ~ oh, that is sweet...you baby snuggled up to you, falling asleep to the sound of the ocean! No wonder she still loves the ocean even today! :)
ReplyDeleteBetsy,,,,what do you do with your wonderful sketches? I hope you keep them safe! They are so wonderful. I would love to have one to frame! I mean it!
ReplyDeleteNanny ~ awww...you are too sweet. Believe it or not, the first two or three I didn't even keep! My niece requested the baby bird, which I still need to give her. Other than that, they are in a file so they won't get bent. If you're really serious, just pick one and I'll mail it to you if I still have it. Although, gosh, I can't really imagine anyone really wanting one! ha. :)
ReplyDeleteThat is a wonderful way to depict the music of the sea coming from the sea shell. My mom must have loves shells as I empty out her home I keep finding sacks filled with shells. Jars full of shells in the garage and plastic sacks of them that I will not throw away.
ReplyDeleteLD ~ how wonderful to be finding all of your mother's collection! Sounds like she might have more shells than even me! :) Do you know what you will do with them? Make sure and share pictures! ;)
ReplyDeleteI love your sketch. I always collect seashells on rare visits to a beach and have a soap holder in the bathroom filled with them. I paint them with clear nailpolish, so that they look wet.
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday...xa
Alaina ~ they are prettiest when wet, aren't they? :)
ReplyDeleteHi there...this is a very good one! I missed you my friend! I'll have to go look seeing here to catch up! :D
ReplyDeleteMay I please have the lemon slice or if not available the June 1 one?
ReplyDeleteJoy ~ Sorry, the lemon slice is framed on my desk...that one I want to keep. The June 1st is the baby bird, which my niece has requested.
ReplyDeleteI love the ocean too. My parents retired next to Destin, FL, so we get there pretty often.
ReplyDeleteWhat an excellent drawing! I too am from the midwest, but find the ocean so appealing. I have shells in many places in my home...like fine jewels or pieces of architecture. I'm like a kid when we walk on the beach...pockets full of sand and shells!
ReplyDeleteAnita ~ have you ever read Gift From The Sea by Anne Marrow Lindbergh? You'd like it. :)
ReplyDeleteI love shells too and have lots!!! Your picture is lovely....xx
ReplyDeleteBetsy, me too, I love the ocean, the soothing music of its waves and your picture is the best ever, music coming from the shell, wow, very pretty! happy week to you :-)
ReplyDeleteYou did an awesome job on the shell. I thought it might have been one from your trip to Florida until you said where it came from.
ReplyDeleteOh how I loved holding up a shell to my ear as a kid, was fascinated! Love the sound of the ocean, it's so peaceful!
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!

Nancy's Notes
beautiful :)
ReplyDeleteI am instantly calmer when I'm on a beach. I love it in every one of its moods. I feel invigorated and sleepy all at the same time...
ReplyDeleteThere is something about the ocean that calls to me also. I love the sound of it, the vastness, the beauty, the power...I think I need a vacation.
ReplyDeleteKayren ~ the shell from Japan is quite large...probably about 12x8". You have to dive for shells like that...never find them on shore. My little drawing makes it look tiny!
ReplyDeleteHa, love it, Betsy. The pattern on the shell makes me think of Klimt's work.Love the little squares of color and of course the way you do your music lilting out in to the air. Beautiful I am sure. thank you for doing this. Adding it to the montage as we speak.
ReplyDeleteMmm ~ well, not being a real artist like yourself, I wasn't sure who Klimt was. But as soon as I did a google search I recognized several pieces of his work...Gustav Klimt...yes, he does use those little squares of color!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mr. Toast. :)
Beautiful picture. I love the sound of the sea. The ocean is completely different from the river in front of my house. I like both though.
ReplyDeleteI can hear it! And, I wish I was oceanside right now!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful drawing.
wonderful take on the sea!
ReplyDeletebeautiful seashell Betsy, you've captured the colours so nicely
