Midwest US corn farmers have an expression
'knee high by the fourth of July'.
A crop which is expected to turn out well will be
at least knee high in early July,
which means the initial growing conditions have been good!
We've had hot sun and lots of rain here in Ohio!
The sweet corn is gonna be delicious this summer!
I grew up on a farm and remember that saying. The corn in Michigan is looking good this year too.
ReplyDeletePS - congrats on the car!
i was going to say...the corn down the street is mighty high...would not mind some corn on the cob...making me hungry before bed betsy, not a good thing...smiles.
ReplyDeleteSweet corn and garden tomatoes...the best foods of summer! :)
ReplyDeleteAh, you just wanted an excuse to showcase your new vehicle in the photos! Seriously, I've always loved corn on the cob, but I never heard that old saying. Nice post.
ReplyDeleteThat is great news...it's my favorite! :D
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! We lived in the Midwest once- I still remember the looks and smells. The richness of the green fields. Not so much here in ... Texas.:) But it's home.
ReplyDeleteIf we still lived in Illinois it would be at least six feet tall by now probably...but here, it's still not as tall as yours! The farm we drive by on the way home might be knee-high now, and we've had a warm summer, at least compared to last summer. This is only my second one here, so I'm no expert. ;)
ReplyDeleteYum, I love corn.
ReplyDeleteMmmmm I love corn too!
ReplyDeleteThat photo looks like it could be right down the road from us. My FIL drove a corn chopper for many, many years. Some of the fields were near a local river and ducks would nest in the corn. When the choppers got close the mother ducks would stay as long as they could on the nest then fly away. He would always stop and gather the eggs and keep them warm until he could take them home. My MIL raised hundreds of baby ducks every year until they could be released back into the wild. It was a sight to see!
ReplyDeleteSo funny...you see we are Dairy farmers here in NW Washington and yes, even here in the Northwest my husband uses this expression! We have a dairy but raise corn to feed the cows, and yes the other day he said, Let's check the corn and he drove out to check it, and said...'Yep, it is going to be knee high by the 4th of July!' :)

ReplyDeleteDear Betsy, Don't worry about my last comment - my mind is going!. What I was trying to say was that, in future, could you include a picture of an elephant so we can compare the height of the corn to its eye.
ReplyDeleteWe're already enjoying sweet corn in these parts!
ReplyDeleteI'm not surprised that it's been a good year for corn...because I've had a bumper crop of grass so far this year too. It needs mowing every 3 days...not that I mow that often.
ReplyDeleteMy dad grows a small crop of corn at his house, and my girls and I picked several bags full a week ago. We shucked, silked and cut some off the cob to freeze and then ate the rest for the next couple of nights with supper :) You hit the nail on the head, Betsy...fresh sweet corn and garden tomatoes are the finest!
ReplyDeleteAlan ~ haha...absolutely! And this corn would be just about that high. I'll drag my pet elephant out to the fields for the next photo. :)
ReplyDeleteMelody-mae ~ I didn't know this phrase would be known clear out there! How fun! Love dairy cows, too, btw...they are so pretty. :)
ReplyDeletegreat looking corn crop betsy out of the windshield that lovely (safe!) new set of wheels!
ReplyDeleteYour view looks a lot like mine! Its like driving through a tunnel of corn. The Jersey corn is about to tassle this weekend! And I have already sampled Jersey corn from this year and its was Delicious!
ReplyDeleteSilver Fox and Elk ~ haha, yes! Safe vehicle...not so sure how safe it was to be snapping pictures while driving, though! But as you can see, there isn't much traffic here! :)
ReplyDeleteWe have been thinking the same thing...that the corn is ahead of schedule!! Makes for good fun when the kids love to play in it!
ReplyDeleteNothing better than a fresh ear of sweet corn!
ReplyDeletenothing like fresh picked corn!!
ReplyDeleteI love your fields of corn. Brings back many memories. I lived for a time in the small town of Middleport in Ohio. What a lovely area for all things that grow!!!
ReplyDeleteLucky you!
ReplyDeleteWow! You are not just a' kiddin' me!! That's gonna be quite a harvest!! You will have some yummy meals this summer!!! Terrific photos! Love the knee high reference! Such fun! ~Janine XO
ReplyDeleteI know.. isn't it grand! It's now as high as an elephant's eye.. according to Gordon MacRae from "Oklahoma".....
ReplyDelete:) The Bach
did you say sweet corn? The 4th is this weekend, and i can taste the buttery stuff now! i'm a buckeye, too; but mostly hoosier now, alas.
ReplyDeleteTom ~ I'm the opposite...born a hoosier, now a buckeye! ;)
