Autism and the H1N1 Vaccine
Are you thinking about giving your child with Autism the Swine Flu vaccine?
Here's what our DAN (Defeat Autism Now) doctor said about it on his blog. He's
actually talking to all of his patients...not just autistic ones.

"What About the H1N1 (swine flu) Vaccine?
On 9/10/09 a research report indicated that the vaccine might be more effective than previously thought so that only one shot might be required (in addition to the regular flu vaccine, of course). Safety issues have not yet become apparent. The National Vaccine Advisory Committee is recommending the vaccine for virtually everyone, but they also caution that we need to monitor adverse effects very carefully and transparently, which has not always happened in the past. Potential side effects include paralysis and death. Thus far, the swine flu illness does not look to be very severe, except for high risk individuals, although that could change. The vaccine does contain mercury. My recommendation is to take 2000-5000 iu of vitamin D daily and 1000-3000 of vitamin C. You can take mucococcinium (a homeopathic available through our office) one pill every two weeks for prevention. If you get sick, monolaurin and “colds and flu” homeopathic are usually helpful, and I would generally avoid Tamiflu medication. The vaccine is your choice, but I doubt if I will take it."

Nobody in our family has ever gotten a flu shot, and I'm thinking we will skip this one,
too. What do you think? Are you planning on getting the vaccine? I'm actually shocked to read here that it contains mercury. After all the controversy surrounding thimerosol (mercury used as a preservative) and the causes of autism, you would think they would stop putting it into vaccines or shots of any kind....especially when they are recommending babies and pregnant women receive it.

Betsy,
ReplyDeleteI got the flu shot this year for the first time at Walgreens. Every year I say I am going to do it and I don't. But I have asthma and combined with a cold, well, I have had pneumonia a few times. In my case I think the benefits outweigh the risks and so I am content with my decision.
Thanks for putting all the info out there. I hope it makes all of your readers seriously consider the entire realm of this vaccine.
xoxo
Jane
I usually get the flu shot because of my work. However, I'm not planning to get the H1N1 vaccine. In the past it had much worse side effects and I don't think it's worth the risk.
ReplyDeleteMy pediatricians nurse guilted me into giving Clee a flu shot at 4 months old, unaware it contained thimerosal. I'm not saying it caused his autism, or triggered it, but do sometimes wonder what if?
ReplyDeleteNo one in our family hasn't received a flu shoot since and most definitely aren't planning on it anytime soon.
I really like what he said about taking vitamin D and C. If you can keep your immune system up, then you should be ok. I've been debating getting both vaccines, and may settle for the flu. They say if you think of becoming pregnant that you should get both-but its a bit unnerving. The nasal vaccine actually contains the live virus and you are more likely to get sick.
ReplyDeleteHopefully you and your family stay healthy!!
Betsy, Mom was exposed to the H1N1 at her dialysis clinic and was put on the Tamaflu for a few days, as precaution. But neither of us got sick. I've not had a flu shot in well over 25 years( maybe longer ). Didn't know about the mercury! I'll just keep taking my vitamins instead...
ReplyDeleteAlso, the human immune system has a nasty habit of trying to ward off any invading force( like a flu shot )and ends up doing double duty, in most cases.
Blondie ~ I have a friend who has severe asthma and gets a flu shot each year, too. I agree that the benefits outweigh the risks in her case...and yours!
ReplyDeleteMari ~ My friend who is an RN gets the flu shot, too.
ReplyDeleteNatalie ~ I know exactly how you feel...my guys were normal until their 18 mo vaccines,...which were combined at the time....you can't prove it, but you have to wonder!
ReplyDeleteYour new avatar is gorgeous, BTW. :)
We will not be doing the H1N1 Vaccine for ourselves (especially me being pregnant) or our boys. In my opinion it is too soon to know risks and side affects. Two of my friends, both mothers, one a pharmacist and one a pediatrician, are NOT recommending it at this time and will not be giving it to their own children.
ReplyDeleteI have never had a flu shot ~ I do not intend to start now.
ReplyDeleteA dear friend's wife died the day after receiving a flu shot ten years ago ... she died in her sleep. It may have not been related to the shot at all - but it was just so strange.
We have never had the flu shot here...plan to keep it that way!
ReplyDeleteWe don't get flu shots and they always recommend it for my daughter who has asthma but I just don't trust it. I have always had both of my kids vaccinated but I just don't trust the flu shot for some reason.
ReplyDeleteThe H1N1 shot is too new and we don't know how anyone is going to react to it. We will put our trust in God to keep us healthy!
i get flu shots every year and will get mine on wednesday this week. i don't plan to get the h1n1. mercury in a vaccine sounds less than desirable!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this, Betsy! I've been hearing so much (all negative) about the H1N1 vaccine. We certainly don't plan on getting it. Only one year did I get flu shots for our kids (Vince & I have never had one) and that was absolute worst winter ever with illness. I haven't gotten them one since. We have taken Tamaflu meds before though.
ReplyDeleteI'm off to buy more vitamins...
I work in a High School and can get a flu shot for free, every year. But I have never gotten one and don't plan on ever getting one.
ReplyDeleteI take all the vitamins that the Dr. recommends and then some.
I wash my hands, phone, keyboard, counters, pens and anything else I can think of, often.
By the way I haven't gotten sick in years!
Nope, nada, ain't happening!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about getting it, but my hubby kept saying that it has mercury in it and to not get it. I did not know for sure but I guess I do now. So I guess I will just get the regular flu shot as I have done for about 5 years now. I get it because I have asthma and had been getting pneumonia every year for so many that I cannot even count them anymore. They finally gave me the pneumonia shot and thank God I have not had it since. They also recommended I get the flu shot and so I finally started getting it. Now you have me wondering if the regular flu shot also has mercury. Does anyone know if it does?
ReplyDeleteI will still probably get it, but I still always get some kind of flu or cold that keeps me sick for weeks, but I still do better than I used to. Only God knows why I am still alive.
God bless.
I shall have the flu shot. The side effects of swine flu can be fatal. And the more of it there is about - even if it is mild - the more likely it is to mutate. And if that happened we have got serious problems.
ReplyDeleteNo vaccine for me, no thank you. I rather take the flue.
ReplyDeleteConsidering I had a bad flue abut a month ago, I am hoping that was it for me.;)
I never knew they contained mercury, but one would think that it is in a minute amount or this would never pass the regulations.
Mrs. U ~ yes, the regular flu shots have mercury in them, too. It will not hurt a healthy adult and if your health requires a flu shot then I say get it. It's the very young, whose brains are still developing that shouldn't have it...and yet they are on the list as the ones who should!
ReplyDeleteI'm not getting one. I never do. In my experience it's a very iffy procedure: at work (where we have a free flu clinic) often those who haev had the flu shot feel worse and get sicker ahead of those that don't. Also, no flu shot protects against the different strains that come out each year. I suppose if my health was fragile, I might reconsider.
ReplyDeleteWhat I do is stock on my daily vitamin C, wash my hands a lot, avoid sick people, make sure I get lots of rest and also take oil of oregano the minute I feel a bit under the weather (two nasty tasting drops on the back of my tongue, washed down with lots of water... actually I understand O of O is available now in gel capsule form... probably easier to take!)
The mercury issue is nuts. My friends, a young couple, managed to track down mercury-free shots for their babies and it was a huge hassle... it shouldn't be that hard considering the very real risk factors involved, not to mention the possible autism link.
BPG ~ I have several friends who were sicker after the regular flu shots. And it seems the current shot doesn't cover the always mutating strain.
ReplyDeleteI remember you taking that Oil of Oregano! I'll have to remember that. Zicam and vitamin C seem to kill anything I feel coming on. Hope we all stay healthy! :)
This is actually 'fragilemom'. I can't figure out why I show up as Fall is Great. Anyhoo, we don't get the regular flu shot in our household either, and I can't remember one time any of us has gotten the flu since our kids were born (not planning on this being the year, of course). So, we still opt out of that one. I go back and forth with the swine flu one. I HIGHLY doubt we will opt to get it. We have been watching our kids very carefully and taking their temp everytime they even feel lukewarm, seem lathargic, or don't eat all their food. We look for the Lord's protection over them since He knows our fearful hearts (but that doesn't mean He will keep it from them....He's King and do whatever He chooses). I worry most about our kids' immune systems and how the vaccine might affect them. So, for now, we're hangin out and will watch how other's do with it. I think we'll try the vitamins. We should probably supplement more around here.
ReplyDeleteThe last time I got a flu shot I got REALLY sick, and then stayed sick for 3 months. Recently I had a food allergy test done and found out I was allergic to egg whites and egg yokes, both of which are used in a flu shot "base". We'll that explained that! Haven't had one since and don't plan to begin now. Not gonna take the Pig shot either. Don't like the mercury and don't like the vast amounts of the unknown effects. Since I began working at home I haven't gotten sick and have had no asthma related issues. Not planning to start now. But I like the idea of increasing my vit D & C. Thanks for the post!
ReplyDeletenice blog...

Noah and I do not get ANY flu vaccines as the regular ones contain mercury too among many other horrific "fillers"...some you would not believe. I had posted about it on his blog some time back.
ReplyDeleteBetsy, thanks for your post about the H1N1 and the flu vaccine. Jennifer was going to get the flu vaccine for Riley. After your post, I called her and advised her not let her have the vaccine. You post made me stop and think, instead of listening to our liberal news!!
ReplyDeleteMy teen son just got over the Swine Flu (H1N1) and so won;t be looking at any vaccines for him or any of our kids. Like you, we've not done the flu shot before either. Well, one year I got it for me and ached for days. Horrid.
ReplyDeleteBetsy...we do not vaccinate for regular flu and will NOT be getting the H1N1 vaccination. They JUST started testing it in July! We will go the daily supplement route and upon the first sign of ANY illness go on HIGH alert. I read all your comments thus far and clearly MORE people opt NOT to take the shots than to take them.
ReplyDeleteEach situation is quite different. And each family/individual must make their own choices...and hopefully it is an informed choice.
I have gotten a flu shot every year since I turned 50. Luckily I never had a side effect from it. (knock wood!) .
ReplyDeleteIt is disconcerting about mercury being a component of the H1N1 flu shot -- I'd be concerned about that also. Hard decision to make but everyone should weigh the pros and cons.
So many people die from the flu every year ...H1N1 is just one more variety that can kill.
When my kids were little and I didn't really think twice about it, I got it and so did they. Hubby always had to get it since he was in the Army. They make you get vaccines.
ReplyDeleteThe last time I think that the kids had the vaccine was when we lived in NJ, probably more than 10 years ago. I actually did get a flu shot in 2004, not too long before my right arm paralyzed. I got the shot in my left arm though. The strange thing is, I was diagnosed with Parsonage-Turner Syndrome, which is extremely rare and of unknown origin, but they have possibilities of causes, one of which is a flu shot. I don't personally think that's what caused mine (I think it was stress because Hubby was in Kuwait and there was some other stuff too that's too lengthy to go into here).
The first year we moved to Illinois Buddy had the rare strain of the flu and was pretty sick for about two weeks. When he was finally diagnosed at Cardinal Glennon ER they told me that even if he'd had the flu shot that year it wouldn't have done any good since it was for the common strain.
My grandma gets it since she is very elderly and it would be really bad for her to get sick and I suppose the mercury isn't going to hurt her too badly at this point. We don't get the flu shot now, but if we had a medical reason and a doctor told us we needed to we would consider it. My children are also older now so I think there would be less negative effects.
I can't imagine getting the H1N1 vaccine...just hasn't been around long enough.
Oh, and when Hubby HAD to get the flu shot, he was always sick. Didn't make me that way the years I had it, but it did him.
There are options that you have instead of the conventional vaccines.
ReplyDeleteHomeopathic Immunisations have been used before conventional vaccines ever existed and they are completely safe and effective
