Summer's Finest

Summer is probably my least favorite season
except for the food! And there's nothing like
sweet corn in Ohio! I've been going to a local
farm to get corn for many years now.
They boast to be the best in the country
and I would say that they probably are.
They plant in staggered times so the crop lasts
longer. And they plant several types from a blend,
to Golden Nugget to Silver King.
And they have a drive through service! Back behind their
house they have a barn set up with 6 old refrigerators,
a cash register and lots of teenagers working for the summer.
The corn is picked every morning, bagged by the dozen and
kept at it's peak in the refrigerators. A quick drive through
and they even put your bags in your trunk.
It's one summer tradition I'm always sorry to see come to an end!

  1. The sweet corn that is grown now days is fantastic. A friend of mine works as a fieldman for an agricultural company. He is always getting me fresh sweet corn, along with onions, red potatoes, etc. Last week he gave me 3 dozen ears...man was it sweet. We had some friends over Saturday night for hamburgers on the grill and we served corn with it......it was all eaten. Nice post Betsy.

  3. That drive through corn place sounds very neat. I will be coming up your way next week to Indy. My mother used to always say, "Corn is so pretty." I didn't understand, but now I do. It makes me feel very settled. Corn is a wonderful food. I agree, summer is my least favorite season. :)

  6. We took a little drive into the country Saturday and the corn in the fields was amazing! We have had so much rain that it was absolutely lush. I've never seen mile after mile of such lovely, lovely corn! I guess I am feeling my roots here.

  10. Lora ~ you have no idea. We shouldn't be surprised when God speaks to us directly through his Word, but I do find myself speechless at times when it is so direct that it takes my breath away. :)

  11. I'm missing corn right now! It's 75 cents an ear at the commissary, and I'm not sure how fresh. The English store I shop at doesn't even have it!! What's up with that???! LOL!

  14. This post is making me wish I had some fresh corn to grill. I love it cooked that way along with grilled onions, mushrooms and bell peppers. Come to think of it, creamed corn sounds good too!

  15. I wish I were close enough to a farm to get corn this way!

I love fresh corn on the cob, but it has been very expensive here this summer. I guess high gas prices has effected the trucking industry and it in turn is reflected in the high prices of vegetables.

  16. Pat ~ I bet that is true! If it has to be trucked in, it will be expensive...and not as fresh! Oh well, you get to look at the Statue of Liberty! :)
