at breakfast! But it's really Sanddollars!
I've collect shells since I was a little girl.
And even though I've been to the ocean only
a few times, I'm facinated with it.
I have several sanddollars and was surprised
to learn about some other species ~~
the pancake
and the biscuit! The sanddollar also has little
teeth inside that can be seen through the center hole
on it's underside. They look like little doves.
The doves, along with the star on the top and
the poinsettia pattern on the back, have
inspired a legend that the sanddollar
tells the story of Christ's birth, death
and ressurrection.
Interesting!
Beautiful photos, so delicate in hue and texture...
ReplyDeleteI think I heard that sanddollar legend years ago, it rings a bell...but can't remember it now...
I wonder if someone can track it down...
Are these your photographs Betsy? They would look incredible framed... or I suppose the sand dollars themselves. But the photographs could be blown right up.
ReplyDeleteThey are stunning, so milky white. They almost seem to be breathing. Absolutely gorgeous!
Lavinia ~ Here it is....
ReplyDeleteUpon this odd-shaped seashell a legend grand is told,
about the life of Jesus, that wondrous tale of old.
At its center you will see, there seems to be a star,
like the one that led the shepherds and wise men from afar.
Around its surface are the marks of nails and thorns and spear,
suffered by Christ upon the cross; the wounds show plainly here.
But there is also an Easter lily, clear for us to see,
the symbol of Christ's resurrection for all eternity.
Princess G ~ No, they aren't mine. They would be beautiful blown up and framed, though! Nice idea! I need more wall space! What a dilemma....love my windows but want more walls! :)
ReplyDeletePretty pix and nice symbolism, too. Nice collection, Bet! I'm hungry now... :)
ReplyDeleteHi Betsy...What a interesting little post...your photos are very nicely done..I have heard the legend before..so glad you've reminded me once again..I'll have to share that with some little ones I know when we go to the beach...
ReplyDeleteWillow ~ yes, let's find a drive-thru!
ReplyDeleteDeedee ~ It would be very fun to find a sanddollar on the beach and share the legend! There are several versions I found on the internet, but all basically have the same idea.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. I've always wanted to find a whole (unbroken) sand dollar but never have.
ReplyDeleteMG ~ Yes, they are so fragile it's hard to find one whole! I have had luck at the thrift store before instead of the beach!
