Blue Jays

Ever since we started keeping a little bucket
of peanuts in our crab apple tree, we've had
a nice group of Blue Jays feeding in our yard.
They've stayed since last winter, nested here
in the spring and raised their young over the summer!
I guess we better keep the peanut bucket full
for the next generation to come!
The jays are always fun to see with those beautiful
blue feathers....weather it's in the gold leaves
or against the sparkling snow!
If you want to keep a peanut bucket in your tree,
just punch a few holes in the bottom so it doesn't
fill with rain water and you're good to go!

  1. Such beautiful birds! I have 2 of them coming regularly for peanuts. I hear them call and head out with a handful of peanuts.

  2. Beautiful Blue Jays. We enjoyed them over the years at the cabin in Tahoe. I just bought a bag of roasted peanuts for my peanut butter cookies.

  3. I love our jays, too. And they go crazy for peanuts. When I first fill feeders I hope to see the chickadees first because once the jays arrive they take right over.

    1. They are pretty bossy, aren't they! The little ones have to wait their turn.

  4. Love blue jays. Mom and Dad always had feeders out. I don't remember them getting peanuts, but maybe they did.
Such a beautiful variety of blues in their feathers. Pretty shot.

  6. blue jays are so cool and really smart. we had a squirrel peanut feeder attached to a tree. they would land on the little ledge and push up the plastic door with their head and reach in and grab a peanut. other birds didn't do that but i bet they wish they could. between the squirrels and blue jays we sure had to buy a lot of peanuts. nice post and cool fall pic.

    1. What a cute story! Yes, I would say they are pretty smart to figure that out!
I agree about all the peanuts purchased and how fun it's been.

  7. Never seen Blue Jays here, perhaps they don't like living in England. Come to think of it, neither do I, but I'm stuck with it. At least they can fly to Ohio if they want!

  8. Thank you for the tip about hanging a bucket of peanuts in the trees for the Blue Jays. I think they are such a beautiful bird, but we have problems here with them trying to keep the other birds away from our regular bird feeder. Perhaps we will give this a try and see what happens.

    1. Yes, give it a try! Make sure they are not salted, too. Hope it works! They are greedy and can be bullies, too. Maybe their own peanut bucket will help.

  10. Sounds like you got some additions to the zoo
    Even with your kitty crew
the peanuts are worth the scare
    I'm sure they beware

    1. A few more mouths to feed
as they come in with hunger and greed.
I'm sure the warning has spread
as they watch the cats with dread.

  11. Very pretty birds. And great photo. Shame we don't have Blue Jays here. Pop over to see me and bring some so we can introduce them into the wild . . :)(

  12. Yeah, they're pretty, but they can be really selfish when it comes to available food.

  14. That is such a good idea. The Blue Jays are so pretty. A flock of Blue Jays traveled through our woods close to the house early yesterday morning. I thought all the noise was coming from black birds in the trees, but Poppy said, no, those are Blue Jays. I've never seen them do that before and wondered if they had come here for the winter. We do have Blue Jays in the winter.

  17. Your blue jays are beautiful. Love the mosaic looking pattern. We have scrub jays here in the so cal desert and stellar jays in the mountains. One thing for sure is that all blue jays love peanuts! Taria
