Fresh Herbs

My rosemary and chives are still going strong
after bringing them inside for the winter!
But the rest of my pots slowly succumbed to
the dim light and dreariness of the past season.
Last week I planted new seeds and
have enjoyed watching them sprout.
Cilantro, thyme, and dill.
The basil, mint and Italian parsley haven't
sprouted yet. Hmm.  I'll give them a few
more days and might have to try again.

  1. I planted seeds of basil, chives and parsley for my kitchen window shelf. They germinated and were growing well, but due to the dim light and the damp air they succumbed to a fungal infection, wilted and died, just like yours.

So I've cheated and bought some well establish herbs from the Garden Centre. First time ever!

    1. I've done both...seeds and the garden center. Both are fun! My rosemary is almost too big! haha. Hopefully I can get the others to catch up.

    2. Rosemary around here is a weed! It grows everywhere, especially where you don't want it to! The one by my front door is a self-setter and I have been using it for years. Wild Parsley is a nuisance as well.

    3. Your rosemary should be a tree by now!

  2. Ooooh, fresh herbs. I had my first cup of fresh mint hot tea at the Saint Patrick Day luncheon at the Villa. I need to plant some mint!!!! Love your marker...how clever.

    1. Mint would probably do very well on your balcony! Speaking of your balcony! You haven't shown us what's going on out there in a while! :)

  4. I get along well with growing the herbs outside, but I've yet to have any live through winter. I think it is the lighting...or lack of it. ha ha Your Cilantro looks great...and I love your marker! :)

    1. Ours would die outside over the winter for sure! We're still a bit chilly here. Yesterday morning, the wind chill was 11 degrees!

    2. I just reread my comment and realized that I left out part of it. lol Lest you think that WV has Florida winters I need to say that I bring mine inside during the winter also. :) Our temperature yesterday morning was cold, but not quite that cold. It was beautiful today though.

  5. I bought myself a fresh potted Basil plant today...can't live without it!
My chives...here and at the cottage...are Perennial! I would think they would be for you too!
I have 2 big pots at the cottage, and here at home in the ground. Try it this year! I love when they flower too!
I have tried growing garlic unsuccessfully...would love that to grow,
Miss V and I will be planting seeds very soon!
    Enjoy your evening...
    Cheers!

    3. Our chives became invasive though I did like the flower....keep an eye on them if you plant them in the ground. We had fields of mint too.😉

    4. I have planted mint in the ground before and it just about ate the house! haha. Never again.
I had no idea chives were like that! Maybe just a pot is enough. lol....

  7. They sprouted quickly... the ones that did. Such a fresh green colour. I love fresh herbs but I don't have a green thumb.
So cold here the last few days. It went from 12C one day to -17C the very next day. Nuts!

    1. I didn't start using them until just a few years ago and can't believe the difference. So yummy! And kind of fun, too! (when they grow. ha)

  9. I had.a friend who planted tomatos from seed in January. That seemed a bit early to most of us. By March she had long green spaghetti like plants. In May she went to Home Depot. These seedlings look quite hardy to me! Good luck!

    1. Oh, that's funny. Well, you know me....loving winter and I don't try to plant my garden indoors months ahead in longing for spring to come! hahaha. But herb pots in my kitchen year round are useful!
I do the opposite from your friend with tomato plants. I buy the hugest tomato plants at the garden center in May...even pay extra for them...and plant them. So much easier and more successful for our short gardening season!

    2. Hi Betsy - I should have added or given you a chance to think about ... the best thing would be to 'grab' a root from a friend and pot that up ... it'd grow more easily I think ... good luck though - cheers Hilary

  11. I planted a small rosemary in the front garden last year. It has quadrupled in size and is covered in pretty blue flowers. The thymes I planted seem to have vanished completely. Shame. I use lots more thyme than rosemary.
