A Little Veggie Garden

Part of my working outside last week was to get the
veggie garden planted.  We can have frost in the night
through mid-May, so it's safest to wait until June to plant.

It's small and manageable, and just the right size so we
don't have crops that are too big for our family.
I have a little space left and I might put in a row of carrots
and baby kale, but for the most part it's done.

Oh, and various and sundry cats to keep the rabbits from
nibbling on things!  That's always helpful!

  1. Oh my gosh, Betsy! I love it! It looks so cute and Englishy. Please post another picture, when your veggies fill in a little bit. Now, I want to make another garden just like yours. And I'll take that guard kitty, too.

    1. I will! I seem to have quite a few things that crawl like the squashes and zucchini and cucumber. I tried to give them room but they will be all over the place soon! haha. I love your raised beds, though and thought it would be easy to make mine that way...same shape, just make the sides. The Mister doesn't see the need, though. haha.

    2. If you have good soil, you probably don't need raised beds. The shape of your beds would make very pretty raised beds, though. I have terrible soil....clay. So for me the raised beds makes much more sense.

    3. Yeah, that makes sense. We hit clay if we dig down very far...but it's not red. haha. I still mix in some potting soil when I plant. I just went out there to check on things and almost lost my cucumber...it was thirsty! haha. Goodness! I need to remember I have outside chores now. lol.

    4. Oh no! Not the cucumbers! Lol!! If only the cats knew how to turn the water hose on.

    1. The blueberries and blackberries are new...might have to wait a year for any fruit, but I'm excited! I had a huge blackberry patch years ago and loved it!

  3. That's great Betsy. The soil looks fantastic, do you get your manure from the local stables? I do, several sacks full in the Autumn and dig it in ready for the Spring.

    1. No manure..but we have a little tilling machine that turns up the soil really well. After I planted everything, the mister put mulch over it all to keep the weeds from growing.

  4. Love the shape and design, Betsy. This is just lovely. I always think it's wonderful to be able to eat home-grown. And of course the guard kitty is an extra bonus!

  12. Interesting shape to your little veggie garden. Did you design it?
I just LOOOOVE Blueberries . . . and so does Peter.

Soil looks great. Do you get your fingernails messy there as well? . . . or is that just potting? . . . lol

All nice and neat at your zoo
I suppose my ocd can forgive the dirt now
Rabbits should would raise an eyebrow
Then again they let foxes play
So you may have bunnies join the fray lol

  20. I saw a little veggie garden
With plants lined in a row
    Each little leaf was smiling
As it's roots spread and it did grow.

    Each plant received some water
    From Betsy's little can
The sunlight made the leaves green
    As photosynthesis began.

    I hope you are rewarded
    With such a healthy crop
    Of veggies all through summer
They know your kindness just won't stop.

. . . and I hope the cats chase all the nasty slugs away . . . lol
