Pretty Glasses

There is a pretty set of stemware at almost every
auction and nobody wants them!  Well, nobody except
me and Ralph.  He's a true hoarder, telling me the other day
that he has boxes of stuff lining the walls and hallways
of his home.  His weakness is pretty dishes.

I don't know why we are the only two that seem to
like pretty stemware.  Maybe people just don't use them
any more?  Doesn't anyone set a pretty table with good
china and crystal at least once in a while?

I paid 50 cents for a set of 8 of these pretty things.
They make any drink look festive, don't you think?
I got these last month, and now I have two complete
sets of stemware.  More than enough, I think!
We can serve water and an additional drink at
each place setting, which I think is fun.

I have a weakness for pretty dishes, too, but
I use mine!  And since I don't need any more wine
glasses, I smiled and winked at Ralph when he bid
and got three more sets for $1 each.
I think he was expecting me to bid, too!
I wonder which hallway they will sit in. ha.

  1. Very pretty stemware. I have mother's crystal from the 1940's and I love it.
The consignment shop I visit frequently, the owner tells me young newlyweds don't like crystal/china any longer!!!

    1. Yes, I've heard that, too! I wonder if it will become popular again in another generation...being cyclical like so many other things.
I'm all for practicality, but I do love the tradition and ceremony of things, too.

Nothing like drinking from a stemmed glass.
Love the word Stemware - never come across that here. :)

    1. I didn't realize stemware was an American word! So, what do you call a glass with a stem?

    2. That's a good question and my answer is Je ne cais pas at the moment,
Perhaps Amy might know or Keith the connoisseur - you know the chap with the refined palate. :)

    3. Keith has already turned in for the night. We'll have to ask him tomorrow!

    4. I must admit that I have never heard 'stemware' either. I've heard them called a 'fluted glass', 'goblet' or just a 'wine glass'. You people in the Colonies have some strange names for things since you broke away from the Mother Country! Eddie - I'm not a connoisseur, just a perfectionist! *cough*

  3. Corn silk stemware is one of my passions as well Betsy!
Never get enough...I pick it up EVERYTIME I see some....
Good for you...an eye for beautiful things...I got a lot of my Mom's Corn silk, and I cherish every darn piece....
Man.....what a shop you and I could have....we would be filthy rich! Yes! Hahaha!
    Enjoy your evening...
    Cheers!

  6. Well I ADORE vintage or antique pretty dishes, glasses, serving bowls, silverware, tea paraphernalia- okay, just about anything you eat or drink from! And I use them too (but the Husband rolls his eyes. He only likes things that are dishwasher safe. lame-O) I am SO with you on this! My problem, as always, is storage. Since I give my Husband-the-clothes-horse a "one in, one out" policy, he does the same to me with dishes!
I am so happy to see beautiful pieces used in good homes. Good for you!!

    1. I think we'd get along splendidly! ha. You know what...I wash all of my stuff in the dishwasher...on the china/crystal cycle. I just make sure nothing can clank against each other. Sometimes I use 1/4 teaspoon of gentle dishwashing liquid instead of a dishwasher tablet, and I've never had any problem...not even with sterling flatware.

    2. Oooh . . . that's a good tip! I may have to try it. To be honest though, I secretly love to handwash my dishes! There is just something so tactile and satisfying in it for me. But it does take a lot of extra time, so maybe I'll try the dishwasher the next time I have a dinner party :)
(and I wish we didn't live so far from each other because I would just LOVE to have you over to eat a lovely meal off of the lovely dishes!) ;)

    3. Well, that would be so much fun! Can you move to Ohio? lol...

  7. I love stemware also, but I have my limit.
Nice choice, Corn Silk? Didn't know that is what it is called.

    1. I have enough for a holiday and a few extra for any future grands...I don't feel the need to keep collecting it.
I didn't know it was called Corn Silk either! It looks like flowers and vines to me! Leave it to Linda to teach us all! ha.

  8. I have a whole china cabinet filled with stemware--mostly inherited from Hubby's mother. We really don't use it all that much; since I'm rather klutzy I'd rather have something sturdier.

    1. I think I'd rather use it and enjoy it...and if a piece or two breaks, then so be it. I know a lot of people would disagree with that, but I like the memory of using it. I pull out a piece to enjoy just for me. I had pink lemonade in one today! haha. You should take a picture...I'd love to see your china cabinet!

    2. I'll add that to my list of things to do :-)

  9. As you know, or might surmise, I have a lot of dishes, stemware, flatware, etc. That's why I always get excited when you go to the auction. And that green depression glass you currently have has been calling me. It's just the s&h expense that becomes prohibitive. But maybe that's a good thing!

I think I may have to start parting with some. Not a lot of room... unless I store it in boxes along the wall, like Ralph! But even with the large selection, I tend to go to the same pieces. I have to make a vow to mix it up more.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah, that shipping and handling is obscene...really! Yes, you should mix it up more...and use it for every day! Why not?! :)

  10. Did L&T pick out china/stemware/flatware patterns, etc.? I know a lot of my friends' children did not do that when they got married. Maybe, as you say, it is cyclical. Also saves money! But I do love it. Maybe I will have to start collecting china cabinets. :-)

    1. No, they didn't! I think it is not 'in' for this generation. I love what they did pick out though,...clean, white, pretty lines....it goes with everything to dress it up or down. And their wine glasses are stem-less! Very contemporary and new to me! ha.

  11. Yes, I have seen the stemless ones too - I quite like them. Uh-oh. Something more to buy!

    1. It did make me wonder how old they are! I think they are so pretty! Do you call them Corn Silk, too?

  14. I love these glasses. Especially since they were nearly free! I love dishes of all kinds, but had to make myself stop collecting due to storage space. I make myself get rid of some if I get new ones. I use my dishes, too! And usually drink from a stemmed glass even if alone. Why not? I read your earlier tip about using the dishwasher with a little mild soap. So glad to know that.

    1. yeah, it's a great tip and I actually think it's safer than hand washing...they are so slippery and it just seems like if you're going to break one, it would be while washing them. This is just easier and I've never had a problem.

  17. Like you, I have multiple sets of dishes that I use for different occasions. Cream colored for everyday, bright yellow for Easter, Christmas china, etc. In addition, I have several sets of placemats for holidays and a set of bright ones including lime green, aqua, pink, yellow that I mix and match to make meals more fun. I'm not a very creative cook, but love to set a cute table. I look longingly at the meals you create and have made a vow to do better this summer break.

    1. yay...another dish lover! You know what...I don't do placemats! Isn't that weird? I even think it's weird. Not tablecloths either. But dishes, silver and crystal..yes. I think pretty dishes makes all food look and taste better!

  20. I love those. I think I would love Ralph too. I have a couple of sets of china and use some vintage metlox for everyday. I found three pieces of the metlox at the thrift store for under a dollar. I went from there to put together a collection from ebay. The pattern is rare and has been pretty pricey to collect. It is perfect and I enjoy it though. Do you collect silver ware too? I have some pretty art deco silver plate.that I started from the thrift store. Lots of odd ball pieces too. I like dishes almost as much as food! I bet you collect table cloths too? Taria

    1. Ralph is a real likable guy. Neat, clean and tidy. You'd never dream his house was lined with boxes of dishes! haha.

I had to look up Metlox! I wasn't familiar with that type of pottery! I see it's in California where you are! I wonder why it hasn't gotten over here to Ohio! haha. I do not collect silver ware...the real stuff goes for a ton at the auctions but I always like looking at it!

No table cloths for me...not sure why not, but that bug hasn't bitten me. lol....

      Delete
    2. What pattern of metlox do you collect?

      Delete
    3. Pepper tree. It is old, same era as I am from. lol It is scarce as hens teeth though! You just have to get into tablecloths too. Silverplate is as much as I can go and only one set of that. I imagine I would have sell my home and become a hobo to afford a set of real stuff. A guy collecting dishes is interesting. Taria

    4. I looked it up...very pretty. I love the simple-ness of it. I'll keep an eye out at the auctions...you never know! I have a set of silver that my uncle gave me...he found it at the thrift store! It's my only set. Yeah, a guy collecting dishes....and he's not a feminine guy either..very manly. He said his kids will not want to inherit his stuff. lol...

  21. That style is called Princess House. It's from about the 1960's. They are sold through home parties...like Pampered Chef, Tupperware. I just looked on-line and they still sell it that way! I had a set of the water glasses and the beautiful water pitcher, but because I used them all the time also, they eventually all broke, but 1 glass I still use sometimes. I was able to buy another water pitcher just recently at a thrift store for about $2.00! They are beautiful.

    1. Ok...thanks for the info! Wow..you got a great deal on the pitcher! That's another thing that doesn't sell well at the auctions that I have a weakness for...pitchers. Sometimes they're left for the trash.

    2. I remember Princess House, the parties were very popular in Marine base housing in 1980 or so too.
